SERIES HISTORY: CONCORDIA 9, MSU MOORHEAD 3Although Concordia controls the all-time series firmly entering the 13 meeting, the Dragons have won the last two contests and CSP hasn’t beat MSUM since 2013 (36-34).

Further, Concordia has never defeated MSU Moorhead at Sea Foam Stadium, falling 30-28 in the only meeting in 2015 on the final play of the game. That is CSP’s only home loss to MSUM, winning the first four games at Griffin Stadium.

Including those two results, the last three games between the schools have been decided by a total of five points including the last affair in Moorhead, 21-20 to the Dragons in 2017.

Concordia’s last win over MSUM in St. Paul was in 2008 at Griffin Stadium, a 27-23 victory.

CSP won the first five games in the series that began in 2001 and won nine of the first 10 matchups through the 2013 season.

In the series, 8-of-12 games have been decided by a touchdown or less, with Concordia holding a 5-3 record in those contests.

Head coach Shannon Currier holds a 3-1 record against MSU Moorhead, winning in 2001, 2002 and 2003 before the loss in 2017 in his second year back with the program.

LAST MEETING, 2017: DRAGONS 21, CONCORDIA 20After trailing 21-10 at halftime, Concordia’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half to give the team a chance to get back in the game on a rainy night in Moorhead.

The defense held All-American wide receiver Damon Gibson to three catches for 24 yards - all in the first half. It was primarily cornerback Dion Wallisch tasked with blanketing Gibson, but the defensive gameplan included help underneath from the linebackers led by Frantz Polimice (12 tackles, forced fumble) and Billy Brown (13 tackles). Safety help over the top completed the team effort on Gibson and the Dragon offense.

Up front, Jackson Dobbs secured nine tackles and a sack to pressure the MSUM passing threat.

Concordia held MSUM to 124 yards and seven first downs in the second half shutout after the Dragons produced 266 yards, 14 first downs and 21 points in the first half.

Offensively, Darnell Rolle shouldered the load with 22 carries for 172 yards and a touchdown.

Concordia finished the night with 27 first downs to MSUM’s 21, had a 453-to-390 edge in total offense with a balanced 233 through the air and 220 on the ground.

The big difference in the game came down to MSUM fixing one of its weaknesses entering play. They came into the game with a -9 turnover margin, but played turnover-free while picking up a pair of Concordia fumbles on a rainy night in Moorhead.

Concordia’s second fumble was crucial, occurring at the MSUM 2-yard line as CSP looked to claim a lead, trailing 21-20 with under a minute to play in the third quarter.

The Golden Bears also forced a fumble, with Polimice shaking the ball loose but when CSP attempted to recover, the wet ball squirted back to the Dragon ball carrier.

Elias Arlington led the receivers with 8-for-80 receiving, Jake Tanner added 4-63 and Marcus Gustaveson had 3-42 with a TD.

CSP used a pair of quarterbacks in the game with Maxon Hutton getting the start and completing 12-22 for 120 yards while adding 9-41 on the ground. Ron Johnson got the call in the second half, completing 8-16 for 113 yards and a TD.

Kicker Jonas Schenderlein made a pair of field goals from 35 yards in the second quarter and 23 yards in the fourth.

LAST WEEK: ST CLOUD STATE 18, CONCORDIA 15 - OTSenior kicker/punter Danny Laudet had a huge day and produced in the clutch, hitting game-tying and go-ahead field goals in the fourth quarter another go-ahead field goal in overtime.

It was part of a record-setting five field goal performance (5-5), and he added a 53 yard punt late in the fourth quarter as well.

But Concordia fell short in the end as St. Cloud State scored on a 3-yard passing touchdown on third down in overtime, beating CSP 18-15 on a rainy afternoon at Husky Stadium in overtime.

It was CSP’s first overtime game since 2014, a 37-34 win over Upper Iowa at Sea Foam Stadium while SCSU hadn’t played overtime since 2010. It was St. Cloud State’s first overtime win since the 2003 season.

Senior Maxon Hutton had a career-high 21 completions (21-34) for 227 yards, and had 16 rushing attempts for 14 yards including 31 last yards from three SCSU sacks.

He connected with senior Jabril Clewis four times for 94 yards.

Concordia’s defense held SCSU to 11-of-26 passing for 149 yards and only three Huskies had receptions in the game.

Sophomores Jake Portz and Dez Bassett each had eight tackles while senior Kelly Pierce added a sack for the defense.

While CSP was 5-of-5 on field goals, SCSU was 4-of-6. And while the Huskies left points on the board, so did Concordia. CSP failed to score a TD on a 2nd-and-goal from the 2, settling for a field goal, and threw an interception in the end zone. Concordia also had a snap miscue that set the Huskies up for a short field goal after the defense was able to record a quick 3-and-out.

Adding punch to the CSP offense was sophomore Shaq Johnson with 9-20 rushing and 5-51 receiving. Freshman Darios Crawley-Reid aided Johnson by going 3-17 rushing and 3-21 receiving.

Jared Olsgaard, the team’s backup quarterback as well as a key member of the receiving corps and a punt returner, had a breakout with six catches going for 25 yards while also playing a series under center with a pair of carries for four years and a long of seven.

PRESEASON & RETURNING ALL-AMERICAN: CHRIS GARRETTJunior defensive end Chris Garrett comes into 2019 as a D2Football.com Preseason All-America First Team selection. He got off to a strong start with at least 1.5 TFL in the first four games and at least 1.0 sacks in the first three games. Through the first half (5 games), he’s had at least five tackles each game and has compiled 6.5 TFL and 4.0 sacks.

Through five games, he’s in the league’s top-10 in TFLs and sacks, ranking sixth in the league with 0.8 sacks per game and eighth in TFLs with 1.3 per game.

He is coming off a year in which he was named All-America First Team by the AFCA and Associated Press, Second Team by D2C-CA and Third Team by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette.

Last year, he led the country with 1.65 sacks per game and was fourth in the nation with 1.90 tackles for loss per game.

He set the CSP single season sacks record with 16.5 in just 10 games.

After finishing his sophomore year on a torrid pace with 14.0 sacks, 16.0 tackles for loss and 36 total tackles in the last six games, Garrett’s streak has carried over into 2019, giving him 18.0 sacks, 22.5 TFL and 65 total tackles in an 11 game stretch.

NOTES ABOUT THE DRAGONSOver the last five years, the Dragons have raised their profile on the football field and have established themselves as one of the better programs in the NSIC North. MSU Moorhead’s rise culminated in a trip to the Mineral Water Bowl in 2018 as the team put up their best win total in 27 seasons with a record of 8-4. MSUM has picked up where they left off in 2018 as they have picked up three wins in their first five games.

The Dragons were just minutes away from making it four wins in their first five last Saturday as they held a 26-23 lead over Winona State with 2:20 to play, but a safety on an errant snap on a punt followed by a last-minute field goal for the Warriors resulted in MSUM falling in heartbreaking fashion by a score of 28-26 on their homecoming.

MSU Moorhead has gone to the air early and often this season as they lead the league by nearly 50 yards a game in pass offense with 278.8 per game so far this season. The Dragons have attempted 25 more passes and have completed 31 more than any other team in the league to lead the offense to the third-most points per game with 32.2.

Grady Bresnahan has been the top target as he leads the NSIC with 7.6 catches per game while ranking second with 104.8 yards per game. His four receiving touchdowns also rank third while Trent Marquart has added 19 catches and a pair of touchdowns as well.

The defense has not been quite as dominant for MSUM as they rank 12th in the league in both points allowed (29.0) and yards allowed (381.6) on the season. Shad Vedaa leads the defense with 34 tackles, good for 14th in the league, while Darius Woods-Steichen ranks 13th with 3.0 sacks. Deontre Wade and Parker Syverson have each picked off a pair of passes as well.

FROM THE “GRIFF MYTH” TO “HOME SWEET FOAMPrior to head coach Shannon Currier returning to lead the Golden Bears, CSP had posted an 11-24 record at Sea Foam Stadium (2009 to 2015) and had never posted more than two home wins in a row with just two winning seasons since football returned to campus in 2009.

In Currier’s first season back, the Bears won the 2016 home opener and did so again to start the 2017 season.

In 2017, CSP also nabbed a win in the home finale, a 37-20 win over SMSU that started a three game home winning streak in-

cluding the first two games of 2018 for the first time in Sea Foam Stadium’s history. It was also the first three game home winning streak since the 2005 NSIC Championship season, played down the street at St. Paul Central High School’s Griffin Stadium.

In Currier’s first term leading the Bears (2000-03), he posted an 18-2 home record at Griffin Stadium, starting the “Griff Myth,” a 19-game home winning streak that began in 2002 and spanned four full seasons of perfect home football (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005).

Currier now holds a 25-13 career record in home games at Con-cordia, a perfect 8-0 mark in home openers, a 4-4 mark in home finales and led the team to a winning record at Sea Foam Stadium in 2018 for the third time since 2009.

HOME SWEET FOAM: HOW SWEET IS IT?With a 3-2 home record in 2018, Concordia-St. Paul enjoyed a home field advantage a year ago. The run game topped 200 yards in four out of five home games and held opponents to 131 yards or less four times. Concordia averaged 5.1 yards per carry in home games while opponents mustered just 3.1 yards per rush.

Overall, CSP held a 403.2 to 364.2 average total offense margin and racked up 5.9 yards per play while limiting foes to 4.8 in 2018 home games.

The defense also racked up 6.8 TFL per game while the offensive line limited the damage to just 3.4 opponent TFLs per home con-test. Further, the defense held a 17-to-11 margin in sacks leading to 104-to-57 difference in lost yardage. The defense also stifled

Originally the 8th head coach of CSP football in 2000, Shannon Cur-rier returned to lead the program for his 2nd stint in December, 2015.

He became the program’s all-time wins leader on November 3, 2018 with a 16-10 win at SMSU.

In his first stint, he compiled a 32-12 (.727) record and brought the pro-gram its first NSIC Championship in 2003 when he was named NSIC Coach of the Year. The conference

title also brought a berth in the Mineral Water Bowl, the first post-season game in school history.

He coached Concordia to four consecutive winning seasons and is the only coach in program history to achieve the feat - consecutive or cumulative.

THE GRIFF MYTH - PROTECTING HOME TURFThe team also established the longest home winning streak in school history under his guidance. Known to teams of the era as the “Griff Myth,” Concordia tallied 19 consecutive home vic-tories down the street at Griffin Stadium. The streak began in 2002 and stretched two years after Currier left through the 2005 season, finally falling at the beginning of 2006.

In Currier’s first four years, his teams only lost two home games, producing a record of 18-2 after winning his first and last nine home games.

He opened his return to the program with a 17-0 shutout win over U-Mary in 2016, snapping a 6-game home losing streak and a former school record 8-game overall losing streak. His CSP teams are 8-0 all-time in home openers and he holds a career 25-13 home mark at Concordia between Griffin & Sea Foam Stadium.

CAREER AT TRUMANFollowing the program’s 2003 NSIC title run, Currier accepted the head coach position at Truman State where he turned a losing pro-gram into a pair of 6-5 winning campaigns in his 3rd and 4th seasons.

His tenure was highlighted in his third year, leading the Bull-dogs to a 6-3 record in a strong MIAA, finishing fourth in the league. He left the program following a 4-7 season in 2008 with a 20-35 overall record.

PRIOR TO REJOINING CONCORDIA’S SIDELINESFollowing his departure from Truman, Currier spent seven years working outside of the coaching profession as a senior sales manager with iHigh.com working to build a digital platform for high school sports, reaching up to 1.5 million Minnesotans in his final year with the company.

NSIC BACKGROUND & ST. PAUL PRIVATE EDUCATIONHe arrived at Concordia in 1999 as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for former head coach and athletics di-rector Dan O’Brien, now an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota.

Prior to joining Concordia, Currier spent two years each in similar roles at Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota Crookston following his start in college coaching at Bemidji

State as an offensive graduate assistant where earned his master’s degree in physical education.

A native of Cosmos, Minnesota, Currier was a quar-terback at Hamline University where he graduated with a degree in physical education in 1993.

In the 2019 home opening win over Sioux Falls (41-17), Concor-dia won the turnover margin 2-0, registered six sacks and held the Cougars to 0-of-3 on fourth down and 4-of-13 on third down.

HOME OPENER SUCCESSConcordia head coach Shannon Currier has improved to 8-0 in his CSP career in home openers including 4-0 at Sea Foam Stadium in his second stint. Across the eight home opener wins between Sea Foam and Griffin Stadium, Currier’s Bears have av-erage a 30.9 to 9.4 margin of victory, a total of 247 to 75.

TOUGH HOME SLATE IN 2019 & OTHER SCHEDULE NOTESAfter playing a tough road schedule a year ago, the flipped op-ponents in the South Division leads to a rough home slate in 2019. Concordia’s six home opponents in 2019 combined for a 45-21 overall record last year, and only one of them (SMSU) had a losing season (4-7). The Golden Bears host, in order, Sioux Falls (7-4), Minnesota State (11-0), MSU Moorhead (8-3), Bemidji State (7-4), SMSU (4-7) and Winona State (8-3) in 2019.

Those opponents have combined for a 20-10 record in 2019, with only SMSU (2-3) producing a losing record.

CSP’s last win over a nationally-ranked team was a 27-24 win vs #24 Wayne State in 2011 at Sea Foam Stadium and the last win over a nationally-ranked team on the road was a 28-26 win at #11 Minnesota State in CSP’s 2010 Mineral Water Bowl cam-paign. CSP has now lost 18 straight games to ranked teams.

The Bears snapped a 13-game road losing streak in week seven in 2018 with a 17-7 win at UMary, snapped a 12-game NSIC South road losing streak in week 10 at SMSU in 2018 and in 2019 the program snapped a 10 game road night game losing streak with a 28-23 win over Upper Iowa in a streak that dated back to 2013.

TURNOVERS MATTERAs CSP’s program has grown under head coach Shannon Cur-rier, the team’s steady veteran offensive line has provided more protection for its quarterbacks, leading to more consistent ball control. Defensively, a talented and deep defensive line has helped create pressure in opposing backfields, leading to more forced fumbles and hurried passes leading to interceptions down field under third year defensive coordinator Craig Stern.

Since Currier has rejoined the program in 2016, Concordia has produced a 6-3 record when winning the turnover battle including four straight wins. In week two at Upper Iowa, the Golden Bears lost the turnover battle (2-0) but came away with a 28-23 win, just the second time they’ve done so in 18 games since 2016 when losing turnove margin. When turnovers are even, CSP is 4-6 since 2016.

DEVIN FLAKES BLOCK PARTYFreshman defensive back Devin Flakes got off to an excep-tional start to his college career, blocking a pair of punts while seeing regular action on special teams in his debut as a true freshman. The blocked punts came in a 24-0 second quarter for CSP in a season-opening 41-17 win over Sioux Falls. The first, recovered by junior defensive back Preston Piltoff, set up a two

play scoring drive while the second was recovered by junior de-fensive back Lorenzo Kendricks for a touchdown at the end of the quarter for a 27-7 halftime lead over the Cougars.

The special teams is led by third year special teams coordinator Jake Munkwitz, with the Golden Bears blocking 10 kicks and punts since 2017 in 25 games.

DEEP & EXPERIENCED ON THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGEThe 2019 Golden Bears’ strength is up front, returning all but one combined starter between the offensive and defensive lines. While four year starting tackle Terrell Taylor graduated from the 2018 offensive line, the Golden Bears actually return five blockers with starting experience, along with all four start-ing defensive linemen. (Games started listed below)

On defense, the four starters: Kelly Pierce (30), Jackson Dobbs (30), Dylan Wood (25) and Chris Garrett (16) have played a ma-jority of snaps together over the past three years. In weeks 2 & 3, senior TJ Diallo has worked his way into the interior defensive line starting lineup while sophomore Shawn Aarhus got the start in week three against MSU.

On offense, Rich Kelly (35), Ethan Aune (25), Tanner Haechten (14), Cris Wasylciw (13) and Matthew Montgomery (7) have provided the Golden Bears with the muscle up front.

Montgomery earned the starting center role in 2018 as a red-shirt freshman before his season ended with injury early on, but is now in his third year in the program while Wasylciw was a transfer with prior experience.

In week four, it was redshirt freshman Sam Marshalek mak-ing his first career start in Haechten’s spot due to injury while sophomore Tyson Kauffman saw numerous snaps throughout the win at Wayne State, as well. In week five with Haechten miss-ing a second straight game, junior college transfer Dejon Hart cycled into the backup rotation at guard.

SENIORS FLANK GARRETT ON D-LINEWhile junior Chris Garrett garners the attention that comes with All-America and Preseason All-America honors, he’s joined by four tenacious seniors who are accomplished in their own right: Dylan Wood, TJ Diallo and Kelly Pierce on the interior and Jackson Dobbs on the opposite end.

The statistical leader of that group, Dobbs has compiled 147 ca-reer tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss and 14.0 sacks across 33 games.

In 32 games, Pierce has 115 tackles, 19.0 for loss and 11.0 sacks while Wood has played in the most games (38) with 120 tack-les, 18.5 for loss and 11.5 sacks. Diallo, a second year transfer, earned the start in weeks two and three alongside Wood on the interior and has made 26 tackles (1.0 TFL) in 16 career games.

So far in 2019, Pierce has 19 tackles, 2.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks, Dobbs with 23 tackles, 3.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks while Wood has 19 tackles, 2.0 TFL. The depth on the defensive line is notable with senior Cole Marmor and sophomores Richard Ficociello and Shawn Aar-hus. Ficociello had a big season opener with five tackles, 1.5 TFL and a sack and Aarhus added a sack in the opening win, too.

The defensive line combined for five of the team’s six sacks in the season opening 41-17 win over Sioux Falls and has 11 of the team’s 13 sacks on the season.

SHAQ & LP LEAD A DEEP GROUND GAMEThe running back group is led by sophomore Shaq Johnson and junior Lajuan Preston, both Florida natives. Preston became an All-NSIC South Division honorable mention rusher a year ago when Johnson’s season ended in week four against Wayne State.

Prior to his season ending injury in 2018, Johnson was on a torrid pace with over 100 combined rushing/receiving yards per game (367 rushing, 49 receiving) and five total TDs in four games.

Preston picked up where Johnson left off after Shaq’s injury, gashing Minnesota Duluth, Northern State and Minnesota Crookston for 100-plus rushing yards in a four game stretch in-cluding a high of 21-141 against Northern State. He finished the year averaging 6.5 per carry with 704 rushing yards.

Although Preston suffered a season-ending injury in week four at Wayne State - the exact timetable and opponent as Johnson a year ago, ‘LP’ still leads the running backs with 177 yards and is tied for the team lead with two rushing scores.

2019 CSP FOOTBALL | WEEK 6 | MSU MOORHEAD | OCT 12, 12 P.M. | SEA FOAM STADIUM | ST. PAUL, MINN.career rushing yards with 1,013 on 173 carries, averag-ing 5.9 per carry.

Johnson made his 2019 debut in week two, reaching 100-plus yards for the third time in his career with 12 carries for 118 yards, adding a 36 yard catch and 25 yard kickoff return for 179 all-purpose yards on 14 touches in a win at Upper Iowa. He also found the end zone for his ninth career touchdown (10 with passing included).

A versatile back, Johnson is third on the team (second among RBs) with 142 rushing yards and is third on the team in both receptions (9) and receiving yards (114). he’s second on the team with 281 all-purpose yards, just 15 behind Preston.

Adding to CSP’s ground threat is athletic quarterback Maxon Hutton. The senior, who had his second career 100-yard rushing game with 120 yards and a 76-yard TD run in week four at Wayne State, leads the team in rushing with 276 yards and a pair of scores.

All three have multiple 100-yard performances in their careers: Preston (3), Johnson (3) and Hutton (2).

NEWCOMERS TO THE BACKFIELDIt was senior Cole Kirchoff who drew the start in week one, producing 21 combined yards on eight touches with 6-12 rushing and 2-9 receiving. He also found the end zone for the first time in week two at UIU.

Kirchoff joined the football roster in 2019 after a four year run with the baseball team where he was a start-ing outfielder with three homers, three triples, 17 stolen baes and was third on the team with 20 RBIs.

Darios Crawley-Reid made his career debut in week two at Upper Iowa, and the true freshman got off to a strong start with 7-45 rushing and a touchdown and a 15 yard catch. Crawley-Reid is the younger brother of Chris Garrett.

He’s been a consistent presence in the backfield ever since, with 108 yards, a team-high 5.7 average and two rushing touchdowns. He’s added 6-54 receiving, as well.

A pair of Division I transfers, Ethan Falaniko from South Da-kota and returning DI transfer Jeremiah Pierce-Johnson from Akron also factor in the ground game. They are both physical backs capable of blocking or providing a bruising presence with the ball. They have a combined eight carries for 23 yards.

HUTTON UNDER CENTERSenior quarterback Maxon Hutton has ascended to the starting quarterback role after serving as the backup as a sophomore and junior while making spot starts. The dual-threat QB topped 3,000 yards of total offense (3,049) in week five at SCSU and has 17 total TDs in his career.

In 2019, Hutton has ascended to one of the more effiient and versatile QBs in the NSIC. he ranks third in completion percentage (.590), third in total offense (1,048) and fifth in pass efficency (117.7). He’s also committed just three turn-overs on the year and engineers an offense that has com-mitted just six turnovers in five games, ranking 30th in the country and third in the conference.

He’s already rushed for a career-high 276 yards on the year while adding 772 passing yards, completing 69-117.

In the season opener, Hutton completed 13-of-22 (.591) for 159 yards and two touchdowns while adding 67 rushing yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. The senior also showed the poise necessary to lead a turnover-free offense.

In a week four win at WSC, he was named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week as he produced league-highs for the week in total offense (292) and rushing yards (120) while playing turnover-free football on the road and complet-ing 66.7 percent (16-24) of his passes. The 16 completions would become a new career-high, temporarily. He also had a 76-yard TD run to put CSP ahead in the third quarter.

Backing him up is senior Jared Olsgaard, a transfer from Al-abama A&M by way of Minnesota State Community & Tech-nical College. In addition to being the backup QB, Olsgaard opened the year as the team’s punt returner, averaging 8.5 (4-34). While taking a few reps under center in recent weeks, he’s been featured more prominently as a receiver includ-ing a career-high six catches (25 yards) in week five at SCSU.

Depth at the position is provided by junior transfer Johnny Saavedra and redshirt freshmen Darion Manning and Abe Schwartz. Schwartz has earned a role on the roster as a special teams contributor, and is tied for the team lead in special teams tackles (5) with a team-high (4) on punts.

THREE DEEP WITH SENIOR WIDE RECEIVERSSenior quarterback Maxon Hutton has three senior wide re-ceiver targets with complimentary skillsets: fourth year start-er Marcus Gustaveson, second year junior college transfer MJ Williams and graduate Division I transfer Jabril Clewis. In four games, the trio has combined for over 60 percent of the team’s receiving yards and all three touchdowns.

Clewis leads the team with 216 yards and a 16.6 average while Williams and Clewis each have 13 catches, Williams gaining 163 yards. Gustaveson (6-95) has two of the three TDs with Williams grabbing the other.

GUSTAVESON CLIMBING THE RECEIVING CHARTSFourth year starting wide receiver Marcus Gustaveson has established himself as one of CSP’s top receivers in recent years. He has four career 100-yard performances and is climbing the CSP career receiving charts.

He’s tied for eighth in career touchdown catches (18), 10th in receptions (116) and 10th in receiving yards (1,751). He’s hauled in a pair of TDs in 2019, both in victories, and is sec-ond on the team with 15.8 per catch (6-95).

SOPHOMORE SAFETIESSophomore safety Dez Bassett entered 2019 as the team’s starting strong safety (rover) and was the second leading tackler a year ago as a redshirt freshman with 65. Nearing the midway point of 2019, Bassett is third on the team with 27 tackles with a season-high of eight in week five at SCSU.

Bassett’s redshirt freshman 2018 season also included seven pass breakups and a 77-yard interception return for touch-down in a win at UMary in addition to the 65 total tackles.

Joining Bassett at the safety position are fellow sophomores Rhett Sheehan and Parker Powers at free safety.

Sheehan has started 15 of 16 career games with 51 career tackles, producing 14 stops in five games in 2019, adding a pair of pass breakups..

Powers has 33 career tackles, five pass breakups and an interception across 16 games. He has a pair of three tackle performances against Sioux Falls and MSU among his nine tackles in 2019.

LINEBACKERS PUTTING UP BIG NUMBERS IN 2019A key benefit of having an experienced, physical defensive line is the ability for the linebackers to be free to make plays.

In 2019, Concordia’s linebackers opened the year with back-to-back NSIC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Sophomore MLB Jake Portz has emerged as one of the na-tion’s elite tacklers in 2019. His 10.6 per game average ranks 19th in the country and leads the Northern Sun. The team’s leading tackler in 2018 as a redshirt freshman with 77, he’s rapidly approaching that total with 53 through five games. Portz produced 18 tackles in a 28-23 road win at Upper Iowa to earn NSIC Defensive Player of the Week honors and fol-lowed that up with 15 tackles against #3 Minnesota State. The 18 tackle performance is the second most tackles in a game in school history, an NSIC single game high and the eighth most in a game in DII football through five weeks.

While Portz has grabbed the recent headlines, it was junior WLB Dalton Smerchek who had the impact performance in week one to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors. In a 41-17 win over Sioux Falls, Smerchek made nine tack-les, 1.5 for loss, forced a fumble at the goal line, recovered a muffed punt, had a pass breakup and pair of hurries. One of his tackles was a TFL at the goal line, forcing a field goal two plays later and one of his hurries came on fourth down in the second half as he continued to make impact plays of all kinds.

Initially a long snapper and key special teams contributor, Smerchek has turned into one of the top players on the de-fense in his junior season. In 27 career games, he’s recorded 84 tackles, 4.5 for loss, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.

Smerchek is third on the team with 27 tackles, adding 2.5 TFL, a sack, 1 FF and 1 FR in five games in 2019. The unit is complimented by SLB Gabe Nkumu who is fifth on the defense with 25 tackles, adding two pass breakups.

Nkumu rejoined the program after a year away when he played nine games as a freshman in 2017 with six tackles, 2.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

2019 CSP FOOTBALL | WEEK 6 | MSU MOORHEAD | OCT 12, 12 P.M. | SEA FOAM STADIUM | ST. PAUL, MINN.CORNERS PRODUCE IN NEW ROLESThe Golden Bears have a pair of new starters at corner, junior transfer Preston Piltoff and junior Lorenzo Ken-dricks in his third year in the program. Kendricks was one of the team’s co-captains in week one, making three tackles and falling on a blocked punt for a touch-down in a 41-17 win over Sioux Falls. He’s played in 27 career games with 59 tackles and four pass breakups in his career.

Kendricks secured his first career INT in week three against Minnesota State, the team’s first of the year.

Piltoff had four tackles (three solo) in his debut with CSP, also adding a fumble recovery at the goal line and recovering a blocked punt in a busy first half in a 41-17 win over Sioux Falls. Through five weeks, Piltoff has registered 16 tackles with at least three in four of five games. He is tied for the team lead with three pass breakups.

LAUDET ASSUMES KICKING AND PUNTING DUTIESReplacing one of the top kickers in the country is not an easy task, but the Golden Bears turned to an inter-nal option with Danny Laudet who is in his third year in the program and has familiarity with the graduated Jonas Schenderlein.

Further, Schenderlein has remained in the program as a graduate assistant, working with Laudet and the other specialists.

Laudet responded well to the additional duties im-mediately, converting 2-of-2 field goals (30, 29), all five PATs for 11 points, three of eight kickoffs for touch-backs in his debut at kicker in the 41-17 win over USF.

Through five weeks, Laudet is one of the nation’s best at both jobs, ranking 5th in the country field goals per game (2.0), 9th in DII and the league leader in FG pct (.909) and the nation’s 11th-ranked punter (43.0).

He’s also cashed in all 11 of his PATs, has hammered 11 touchbacks on 27 kickoffs and presides over the third ranked net punt average in the NSIC (39.9).

His early season performance was punctuated with an NCAA Division II long 82-yard punt from the back of his own end zone in a week four win at Wayne State.

He earned NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week hon-ors for his week four performance, hitting the longest FG in the league for the week (second longest of 2019 in the NSIC) from 49 yards, bashing 5-of-6 kickoffs for touchbacks, averaging 51.0 yards on four punts and the league’s season long of 82 yards.

In week five, he was arguably even better, making a 4th quarter game-tying and go-ahead field goal and adding another go-ahead field goal in overtime at SCSU. He also delivered a 53-yard punt with a -2 return (55 net) late in the fourth quarter.

It was part of a 5-field goal performance, the first in the NSIC since 2010, a school record and the only recorded 5-for-5 field goal performance in league history dating back to when stats are displayed (1998-present).

His 43.00 season average and his career average of 40.75 puts him in line to contend for the season (41.32) and career (39.32) punting average records.

TRENDING TOPICS: QB PERCENTAGEA point of emphasis for the Golden Bears entering 2019 is a more efficient passing game. Even a slight improvement in completion percentage and a decrease in interceptions can lead to a significant boost in wins.

Since Shannon Currier has returned to the program in 2016, when the Golden Bears complete at least 54 percent of passes, the team is an above .500 squad with a 7-6 record including wins in four of the last six when achieveing that 54.0 percent mark.

Below is a look at year-by-year season results:YEAR C-A-I PCT YDS TD W-L2016 202-402-10 50.2 2,351 15 2-92017 171-374-15 45.7 2,214 15 2-92018 145-293-15 49.5 1,873 15 5-62019 69-119-3 58.0 772 3 3-2

TRENDING TOPIC: SACKS / WINS CORRELATIONIn the 38 games since head coach Shannon Currier has been back with the program since 2016, the CSP defense has produced 4-plus sacks 10 times and had more sacks than the opponent 14 times.

In the 4-plus sack games, Concordia has a 7-3 record and has won four of its last five games when sacking the quar-terback four or more times including the 2019 season open-er with six sacks in a 41-17 win over USF.

When producing more sacks than the opponent which fac-tors line play on both sides, Concordia is 9-6 but has won four of the last five including the first two games of 2019 when CSP had a 6-2 advantage in sacks against Sioux Falls and 2-1 at Upper Iowa.

FOUR DIFFERENT PLAYERS WITH RUSHING TDSIn Concordia’s 28-23 win at Upper Iowa in week two, the Golden Bears had four different players reach the end zone on the ground, in order: Cole Kirchoff, Shaq Johnson, Darios Crawley-Reid and Lajuan Preston.

The last time Concordia had four different players score rushing touchdowns in the same game was a 73-13 win over Minnesota Crookston on October 7, 2005 when Aaron Cawthorn scored four rushing touchdowns while James McNear, Brian Holmes and John Robinson each had one.

GROUND CONTROL LEADS TO VICTORIESSince 2016 when Shannon Currier returned to CSP’s sidelines, Concordia has rushed for 200-plus yards 10 times, producing a 7-3 record including a week two 28-23 win at Upper Iowa with a 300-yard team effort.

By contrast, when Concordia holds opponents under 100 yards, a much tougher feat, the Golden Bears are 5-1. Five of those six sub-100 opponent rushing games came last year with CSP producing a 4-1 record, only falling 24-20 in the season finale at Winona State.

Just four times since 2016 have the Golden Bears rushed for 200-plus and held an opponent to under 100 yards in the same game - all coming in 2018 with Concordia beating Upper Iowa (34-7), UMary (17-7) and Minnesota Crookston (21-13) while losing at Winona State (20-24).
