Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold is a song sung by Thorin II
Oakenshield and Company in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit. As Tolkien left no title for
the song, "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold" is sometimes referred to as The Dwarf
Song, Thorin's Song, The Song of The Lonely Mountain, or shortened to simply "The Misty
Mountains". The song explains the backstory of Thorin and Company, and foreshadows the
adventure to come for the group.
Siyahamba (pronounced: SEE-YAH-HAHM-BAH), is a traditional song of the Zulu people,
originating in the KwaZulu province of South Africa. With strong ties to the apartheid
movement, the tune has a resolutely hopeful quality about it. African Marching Song is
straightforward, with persistent ostinatos in the bass line and percussion part providing an
energetic background, propelling the theme forward. Several ‘call and response’ patterns
characteristic of African music are also part of the musical fabric.
Rhythmic clapping and stomping patterns add to the fun of Skip Skip Shoo Fly Shoo. This
lively song by Mary Lynn Lightfoot is based on the American folksongs Skip to My
Lou and Shoo, Fly with the spiritual This Train thrown in for good measure!
How Can I Keep from Singing is an old Quaker hymn dating back to the 1800s in the
United States. References to the persecution of Friends may be heard in the lyrics, yet faith
and courage prevail. This arrangement emphasizes the celebratory and life-affirming
aspects of the song.
Praise His Holy Name is one of Keith Hampton’s most popular gospel arrangements. The
beginning section of the piece is a homophonic declamation in three parts, and the middle
section recalls the lyrics from the familiar tune Amazing Grace. The final section intensifies
by adding different vocal textures and repeating the text multiple times. This song helps
teach complex rhythmic figures with standard articulation and dynamic challenges to the
voice in a fun, gospel-style.
PROGRAM NOTES
From The Peanuts Movie, Better When I’m Dancin’ is a peppy tune by Meghan Trainor
positively defies you to keep still! Obviously, a perfectly irresistible showcase for pop and
show groups to strut their stuff! "Show the world what you can do. Prove to them you've
got the moves. I don't know about you, I feel better when I'm dancing!"
The sound of the winter wind is mournful, then stormy, and finally tranquil in this vivid
tone painting for treble and mixed choirs. The text of The Winds of Winter is so
evocative, and the recurring "wind" theme on Oo in the voices is so effective in creating a
desolate, wintry mood -- this is simply enchanting all the way to the closing icy chord.
Skye Boat Song is a Scottish folk song that lends itself beautifully to the sound of
women's voices, and Greg Gilpin's arrangement will help your women to sing with
expression and dynamics. The piano part is supportive, but also independent as it
develops the feeling of the motion of the ocean's waves. Simple and lovely!
An excellent work for building confidence in young singers, Jubilate! skillfully combines a
rhythmic ostinato with legato singing. After a brief, slower middle section, the work
returns to the original tempo and ends with a forceful unison statement of "Jubilate Deo!"
Set in a minor mode, The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls is another creative piece by Mary
Lynn Lightfoot. Mary Lynn's creative setting of Longfellow's introspective text is replete
with the persistent motion of the tide's ebb and flow. Beautiful imagery and word painting
help to make this piece a unique programming contrast for developing treble and mixed
choirs.
