PROGRAM NOTES__________________PROGRAM NOTES_________________Chinese Folk Songs By Zhou Long

This work, in eight short movements, is based upon Chinese mountain songs, work songs, and popular tunes. Folk songs mirror people’s daily lives, their thoughts and sentiments, local customs and manners. In China, folk music and songs have traditionally crisscrossed the established boundaries between high and low culture. Folk songs were historically valued by China's officialdom as expressions of regional culture andtransmitters of timeless value. Early dynasties promoted the collection and study of such songs. The Book of Songs, a Confucian classic datingback to ancient times, is a comprehensive anthology of songs and poems that has profoundly influenced Chinese literature for more than 2000 years. There are three main forms of Chinese folk songs: shan ge, or mountain songs, are sung in the open air, often with long trills that can carry over great distances; hao zi, or working songs, are simple tunes with strong rhythms sung by workmen to accompany their labour; xiao diao, more structured and sophisticated, are arranged and performed by professional and semi-professional musicians for entertainment. The eight Chinese folk songs arranged for string quartet are from different regions in various styles.

In Driving the Mule (Shaanxi) a young girl searches for her boyfriend among a team of mule drivers passing by; the melody is typical of the Shaanxi style with many fourth and minor seventh intervals. In the sentimental Leaving Home (Shanxi), a wife bids farewell to her husband who is going westward to seek his livelihood. In A Horseherds Mountain Song (Yunnan) a horseherd sings about the mundane occurrences of daily life — horses needing grass to feed, and the grass needing the morning dew to grow.

String Quartet, Op. 10 By Claude Debussy

Claude Debussy sought a new kind of musical language, something that would both build upon and go beyond all that had come before. His only string quartet was revolutionary for its time, and had a profound effect on the future of musical composition. In the first movement, Animé et très decide (lively and very firmly), he immediately introduces the short series of notes that will become a seed for material in each movement. After one of Debussy’s signature dreamlike passages, a second, more lyrical theme is added, and each instrument plays each theme with varying accompaniments. In the second movement, Assez vif et bien rhythmé (quite spiritedly and rhythmically), the viola plays the motif as an ostinato (a repeated pattern of notes) with the other parts playing pizzicato (plucked strings). A new melody is added, but the germ of the motif remains throughout the movement up to the pianissimo cadence. All four instruments play with mutes in the third movement, Andantino doucement expressif (somewhat slow, gently and expressively). The motif has been turned into a sweet lullaby with Eastern overtones. It is interrupted briefly by a louder and more passionate section, but returns to the peaceful calm and ends with a heavenly chord. The finale, Très modéré-Très movementé et avec passion (very moderate, then very lively and with passion) starts with a slow introduction that gives a rearranged version of the original theme to the cello. Passages full of dissonances are contrasted with perfect cadences. The final section is very fast, and ends with a violin flourish and a dramatic full chord.

String Quartet, Op. 106 By Antonin Dvorak

Dvorak composed this last of his string quartets after his return to Prague in 1895. The quartet is more classical and exhibits more Czech flavor than the preceding compositions in the American style. The thematic material of the first movement is not complex -- two themes and one transitional motif. The first theme is more rhythmic than melodic: three incisive upward leaps, the last prolonged by a quick fluttering, followed by a descending passage in triplets. The second theme bears traces of a folk tune. Throughout the movement Dvorak ingeniously weaves the two themes together to create a rich texture in which the movement dances in the ears and in the imagination. The Adagio grows out of an extraordinarily beautiful and poignant song characterized by a deeply Slavic sentiment. Dark-hued and melancholy, the song is introduced by the violin, and although the movement is not a theme and variations, Dvorak casts a variety of lights on his subject by moving it through the colors of various keys. The Molto Vivace is a jaunty scherzo with two trios; it contains an unexpected element -- a lyrical interlude that carries a whiff of Dvorak's New World melodicism. The structure of the movement may be represented as A-B-AC-A. The pentatonic melody of the main section has immense dancelike verve in its balanced phrases. The violin and viola sing a gentle duet in the first trio (B); following a short return of A, a quiet second trio is reminiscent of a rocking Czech song. A final statement of the A theme ends the movement. A short introduction in moderate tempo opens the last movement, which becomes exuberantly joyful with the arrival of the Allegro con fuoco. The principal surprise is the appearance, midway through, of the dancing melody from the first movement. It disappears and reappears in nostalgic snatches as the movement advances through its cyclical rondo form (A-B-A-C-A-D-C-B-D-C-A), but the Czech exuberance wins out, bringing Dvorak's last string quartet to a rousing conclusion.

Program notes by John Noelle Moore

Five Songs for String Quartet arranged by Stanley Silverman By George Gershwin

Gershwin’s admirers included the likes of Schoenberg, Ravel, and Poulenc, to say nothing of the general European public who treasures his work. The songs themselves, except perhaps for “Fascinating Rhythm” are not the most familiar Gershwin, although they come from his classic Broadway shows that represent a purely American art form that is honored worldwide. Skepticism of string quartet arrangements becomes moot, as indicated by Washington Post critic Tim Page when he commented on the Lark’s performance at the National Academy of Sciences: “Silverman’s renditions were so deft and sympathetic and the Lark’s performances so smart and urgent that the hybrid took. “Do It Again” bubbled up with Dvorák-like schmaltz while ‘Sweet and Low Down’ swung out with such vigor and strength that the Quartet sounded like a jazz orchestra in full sway.”

WELCOME________________________ Dear NISO friends, Celebrating 30 years: Welcome to the opening concert of our 30th Anniversary season, "Musical Gems." Tonight we hear music telling stories and creating visual images, music considered some of the most well-known and well-liked program music. This is just the beginning of our celebratory season with outstanding guest artists, reunion of former players and board members, and welcoming back to the stage the NISO founder, Dr. Henry Duitman conducting Rachmaninoff. Tonight I also say farewell as my fourth term on the Board of Directors concludes January 1, 2017; of those twelve years, I have served seven years as board chair. What an amazing experience and outstanding organization to lead! I'm convinced the next 30 years will be filled with strong players, fabulous music, and joy that only the arts can contribute. Thank you to so many who have helped me, thank you for all the generous financial support, and thank you to the players and conductors for sharing their talents. Enjoy the Friends' truffles at intermission and look into purchasing the new (don't miss it!) NISO 30th Anniversary CD. Musically yours, Norma Snyder Jones, Board Chairperson
