PRELIMS W/ANSWERS

QM – Shraishth Jain

1.X’s intelligence on the pitch is nearly unrivalled. While not appearing to

excel at any particular part of the game, his forethought and decisiveness elevate his ability manifestly. He has often joked that he has the skinniest legs at his club, and he also attributes the development of his mental game to a lack of great physical ability in his youth. He describes his use of space as instinctive, rather than coached.

Y is a relatively new term, coined by X, to depict his style of play. Its meaning is generally given as “space interpreter” or “space investigator.”

While players such as Cruyff, Sindelar and Xavi have all interpreted the dimensions of the field of play in new fangled and elaborate ways that have changed the way their successors viewed the game, it is fitting of the efficient nature of the Y’s interpretation that he felt the need to categorize those that seek to control the space first and the ball second.

Identify the player X, and the term Y.

Thomas Muller

2.

X, a sportsperson was quite popular in Europe at the peak of his powers, and according to a BBC article and a Government of India press release, X’s statue was indeed built, depicting X in a whole new avatar.

However, some believe the statue is just an urban legend as it is next to impossible to find a single picture of the statue or any concrete information related to it.

However, X’s pictures do feature in the archives of the National Library in the particular city, even if the statue doesn’t.

Who is X? And which city is being talked about?

X - Dhyan Chand, City - Vienna

X outraced his rival Y to the wall in the 100-meter butterfly in this race. Both men went under the record of 50.01 seconds as X touched in 49.82 seconds. Y was next in 49.95.

"You could tell by my celebration how much this meant to me," X said. After he saw the final times on the scoreboard, X defiantly punched the water with both hands, then spit water through his teeth and slapped his own chest in much the same way Y often slaps his own before races.

"I choose never to comment on anything," X said after his victory. "Things motivate me -- sometimes comments, sometimes what people do. That's just how I tick.”

Y was equally resigned and gracious in his post-race press conference. "I never attacked X. I have nothing but respect for the guy," he insisted. "When I race X, I want him at his best.”

Identify X and Y.

X – Michael Phelps, Y – Milorad Cavic

He is a former West Indian cricketer, who was often likened to Joel Garner and Curtly Ambrose. 6-foot 8 inches tall, he seemed to deliver the ball from the clouds. But there the comparisons ended with his famous predecessors.

He made his Test debut against India in 1994 but was totally ineffective on the slow pitches there. It was a surreal sight watching a giant fast bowler being hit around the park, not being able to make much of an impression on the Indian batsmen. He did however make somewhat of an impression on Sachin Tendulkar, dismissing him 3 times in his Test career.

He has the unique distinction of winning a Man of the Match award in an ODI without scoring a run, taking a wicket or holding a catch. Playing against Zimbabwe at Harare in the opening fixture of a Coca Cola Cup tournament on 23 June 2001, he won the match award for his figures of 10-2-20-0.

*15.In October 1993, a Hamburg judge gave Gunter Parche a two-year suspended

sentence, saying that the attack was "something that happens every day in St. Pauli," a Hamburg neighborhood known for prostitution and occasional violence.

The 1993 decision sparked outrage across Germany and beyond. "Scandalous Verdict! The Whole World is Shocked!" was the next day's banner headline in Bild, a tabloid that is Germany's largest newspaper.

An appellate judge in 1995 upheld the widely criticized suspended sentence against him.

Judge Gertraut Goring said a harsher sentence was not justified in view of the assailant's full confession, lack of former arrests and "abnormal personality structure."

"Our law does not function on the principle 'an eye for an eye,' " Goring said. A lawyer for ________ had asked Goring to impose a five-year prison term,

and Hamburg prosecutors had sought a 33-month sentence.Parche, who spent five months in prison between the time of his arrest and

sentencing, said he had expected to spend 10 to 15 years in jail.

On the eve of X’s first event of the year — the San Luis Tour in Argentina — a journalist hit him straight up with questions about doping. He asked X if he could be 100 percent sure all professional riders are clean.

X replied, “Can you tell me 100 percent that one of these journalists isn’t f**king your wife? Where there’s money to be gained, there’ll be the odd d***head who cheats but cycling is miles ahead of other sports when it comes to testing. I hope everyone’s correct but with human nature, you can never be certain. But the positive that I can take is that if someone is cheating, he will be caught.”

In October 2014, it was elected as the most beautiful stadium in Europe, in an online poll by L'Équipe. It is named in honour of a famous church nearby.

The roof, which is supported by tie-beams of four steel arches, seems to float on the underlying tribunes. The arches measure 43 metres in height and help to define the look of the stadium after having been shaped to be similar to the wavy profile of the three tiers of the stadium.

It was the venue for a memorable match where the winning team was dubbed as "the only underdogs in history that everyone wants to see get beaten".

Give the correct name of this iconic stadium. Give the match described in the above para to gain extra credit in case of star marks.

X is known for his unique driving style. He was an "oversteering" driver, resulting in driving faster on slippery surfaces and the preference of using "tail-happy" cars. This allowed him to perform better at circuits that have medium-speed corners.

During his karting career, he developed the skill of using the brake pedal with his left-foot. He reverted to using his right-foot when he participated in DTM, later discovering he became uncomfortable with this style and reverted to left-foot braking in mid-2006.

During his Formula One career, he became known as a "taciturn" character—an individual who take lengthy pauses before answering questions placed before him and would give virtually nothing away to the media. This allowed him to prevent problems and potential scandals from within his team becoming public knowledge.

Y: "One of the first Test matches I played against South Africa, there was one fella ... he was the worst I have ever come across - X. He was horrible. I was only young... the words he called me, I didn't even know what they meant. He just went at me and I don't think there's any place for that in any sport or any society."

X: "I think he has embellished the story a bit too much. I think he's typical of a has-been at the moment. He's trying to stay in the limelight, travelling around the world and I think someone should just sit him down and just say to him he's being quite a cricket comic quite frankly. 27.The X Cup competition was the idea of Sir George Alan X, who

was inspired by the Davis Cup, and the FIFA World Cup. In the same year, Sir George presented the X Cup, produced by AtkinBros of London at a cost of US$40,000. The Cup stands 28 inches high and 16 inches across at its widest, and consists of three parts: a plinth (pedestal), a bowl, and a lid with player figure.

The first tournament was originally planned for 1941–1942 but was delayed when World War II exploded across the continents.

Sir George's dream was finally realized in 1948–1949 when ten national teams participated in the first X Cup competition. Three qualifying zones were established: Pan America, Europe, and the Pacific; though Malaysia was the only Pacific zone participant.
