where is the proof?

• StAR project in early 1990s helped grow Lhasa Ltd from 6 people to 85– AI techniques for toxicological risk assessment– Current KTP is helping Lhasa develop its next generation of

products• Bayesian Networks for software defect prediction with Philips

Electronics– Set a new benchmark for predictive accuracy– BN technology now being used under a KTA project for GHGe

prediction in the agricultural sector• Genetic algorithms for design optimisation with Honda

– Used to optimise the “wings” on the (last) Honda F1 car– now available as a design resource at Surrey

Big Projects

• OPAALS– Open Philosophies for Associative Autopoietic digitaL ecosystemS– EU Funded 4 year project, 15 Partners, 9M Euros

• ERIE: Evolution and Resilience of Industrial Ecosystems – A 6 year, £4M project involving Computing, Mathematics,

Sociology and the Centre for Environmental Strategy• MILES: Models and Mathematics in Life and Social Sciences

– A 3 year, £0.8M project involving Computing, Mathematics, Sociology and Microbial Sciences

– The combination of the last two projects makes us part of a world class centre in the modelling of complex adaptive systems.

Can IT be “Green”?

I = P x A x T

global Impact = customer base (Persons) x spend per person (Affluence) x impact per unit spend on that Technology
