Computer networks

• Collection of computers and other components• Connected through different communication media• Allow for the exchange of resource and information

Evolution of computer networks

Today’s scenario

• Users are rather mobile• Always connected and

producing content• Devices are very powerful

(CPU, storage, comm. tech., sensing)• Information is exchanged

based on interest• Users present

patterns in social behavior

Waldir  Moreira,  [email protected]                                                                                                        http://copelabs.ulusofona.pt

Relation with Social Psychology discipline

• Opportunistic networking• Takes advantages of

sporadic contacts

• Social awareness• Abstracted from times users spend together• Different social angles• Common affiliation, node importance,

community, shared interests, levels of social interactions

• Social-aware networking is less volatileWaldir  Moreira,  [email protected]                                                                                                        http://copelabs.ulusofona.pt

Relation with Social Psychology discipline

• The issue: definition of social (No consensus)• Social strength = different levels of contacts• Social interaction = mere contact/encounter• Social connection = how long the devices of users

are within the communication range of one another• Dynamic social behavior = how often devices meet• Social similarity = shared interests,

common communities, node popularity• Friendship = frequency/regularity of encounters

Waldir  Moreira,  [email protected]                                                                                                        http://copelabs.ulusofona.pt

The SONID effort

• Sociality-aware Opportunistic Networking for Information Dissemination

• Exploit the Relational Models Theory (RMT) • Communal sharing (CS), individuals are equivalent

and resources shared freely; • Authority ranking (AR), individuals are ordered in

linear hierarchies of authority and respect; • Equality matching (EM), individuals reciprocate in

order to balance out inequalities; • Market pricing (MP), individuals seek best

cost-benefit relational solutions.Waldir  Moreira,  [email protected]                                                                                                        http://copelabs.ulusofona.pt

The SONID effort

• Understand the variability between an individual's different social relations and respective evolution within them.

• Infer it from how the users handle their personal mobile devices.

• Consider the surroundings of the user and, more specifically, with whom the user socially engages.

• To drive the decisions regarding the exchange of information.
