Augmented Reality v.s. Virtual Reality

I VR technologies completely immerse a user inside asynthetic environment. While immersed, the user cannotsee the real world around him.

I AR allows the user to see the real world, with virtualobjects superimposed upon or composited with the realworld.

Augmented Reality Interactions

I With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g. addingcomputer vision and object recognition) the informationabout the surrounding real world of the user becomesinteractive and digitally manipulable.

I Artificial information about the environment and its objectscan be overlaid on the real world

I In order to benefit from it you need a dedicated deviceI Laptop or computerI Hand-held like Smart-phone or TabletsI Head-Mounted Device(HMDs) often employ sensors for six

degrees of freedom monitoring that allow the system toalign virtual information to the physical world and adjustaccordingly with the user’s head movements

I Smart GlassesI Gesture based solution (Kinect, Leap motion)

HMDs

– A head-mounted display or helmet mounted display, bothabbreviated HMD, is a display device, worn on the head or aspart of a helmet, that has a small display optic in front of one(monocular HMD) or each eye (binocular HMD).Ex: Google CardBoard and OculusVR

Gesture Based Solution

– A gesture is a form of non-verbal communication ornon-vocal communication in which visible bodily actionscommunicate particular messages, either in place of, or inconjunction with, speech. Gestures include movement of thehands, face, or other parts of the body. (Ex: video)

Augmented Reality Markup Lan-guage(ARML)

I Augmented Reality Markup Language(ARML)is a datastandard to describe and interact with augmentedreality(AR) scenes.

I It is developed within the Open Geospatial Consortium(OGC)by a dedicated ARML 2.0 Standards WorkingGroup.

I ARML consists of both an XML grammar to describe thelocation and appearance of virtual objects in the scene, aswell as ECMAScript bindings to allow dynamic access tothe properties of the virtual objects, as well as eventhandling

I X3D is a royalty-free open standards file format andrun-time architecture to represent and communicate 3Dscenes and objects using XML.

I platforms: Hoppala: world’s largest content platform forgeo based AR

I Augmented Reality JS API awe.js, Three.js
