1) 3/5th Compromise Austin 10 Words: Representation, proportional, system, ratio, value, receive, congress, slaves, argument, tax/taxes 10 Word Summary: Prior to an argument held at the continental congress taxes were based on the value of the land. This system was easily abused by states when they undervalued their land to receive lower taxes . As the name suggests the final decision was a 5:3 ratio meaning that every 5 slaves attributed to the total population as much as 3 free persons and states were taxed accordingly. This system also had an upside to having a larger population in the sense of more representation in congress . The representation in congress was proportional to the states population. In this instance the south wished for lower taxes to decrease any burden the taxes created, however it would decrease the amount of representatives southern states had. The southerners favored a 2:1 or 4:1 ratio while northerners favored a 4:3 ratio with both having foreseeable outcomes. Picture/Image:

3) Missouri Compromise (Andrew) 10 Words: tension, slavery, free, request, territory, state(s), Congress, Missouri, Maine, power 10 Word Summary: In 1819, Missouri requested to be admitted to the union. However, this request caused significant tensions across the surrounding territories. This is because that Missouri was designated to be a slave state, and if Congress was to allow Missouri to have slavery, then they would have to counterbalance the power somehow. Ultimately, Congress decided to balance the slave states and free states by admitting Maine as a free state (i.e. a state that doesn’t allow slavery). Picture/Image:

4) KansasNebraska Act (Andrew) 10 Words: Kansas, Nebraska, settlement, sovereign, territory, upsetting, support, controversy, expansion, violence 10 Word Summary: The Kansas Nebraska act of 1854 allowed the two separate territories to to decide if slavery was to be allowed in the respective territories. The act was signed in by the president at the time, Franklin Pierce. The act allowed the two territories (that were now split along the 40th parallel) to demonstrate their sovereignty as part of the United States. The act, however, was met with mixed support and substantial controversy. Many individuals, especially those from the North, believed that the act essentially made the Missouri Compromise invalid. Due to the upsetting nature of the circumstances, northern abolitionists deemed it necessary to attempt to settle areas such as Kansas; in an attempt to expand the reach of the antislavery ideals. Ultimately, violence was still present. An estimated 50 people died in the conflicts regarding land disputes between the years 1854 and 1859.
