Comprehensive Tour & Review

Gary Hoover of The Spark visit

October, 2015

Illustrated Review compiled February, 2016

Overall the Perot is an excellent museum. It has achieved very high attendance:

1.3 million visitors first year (with great museum competition,

Including Fort Worth).

It is a beautiful facility. For the most part it represents the

“state of the art” in 21st Century Science Museum Design.

2

Page 3: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

However, from a retail (or even Disney) point of view, the Perot is just an extension

of the traditional museum rather than a leap forward.

While some of my criticisms may be seen

as trivial, the devil is in the details (or God is in the details, depending on which quote

you like best).

3

But I also know doing and executing is much harder than criticizing.

You will also see how our ideas for Austin’s Innovation Experience

“The Spark” (planned to open in 2017) differ.

Page 5: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Overarching observations, which apply to most science and art museums:

1. Tells very little of the human story of science, the triumphs and tragedies, which make it more

relevant to visitors.

2. Makes almost no effort to connect the dots, to show patterns between the ideas and exhibits,

talk about the scientific method, show how things interrelate and connect.

5

Using human storytelling would connect more with visitors, make it more relevant.

Connecting the dots would make it more cerebral,

even intellectual, without being difficult.

Awesome vertical transportation.

22

Page 23: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Although there is very little information about the innovative green building,

no mention of the architect, and what there is, is almost impossible to read.

The Spark will place a higher priority on

accessibility of information. If we had a building like this, we would celebrate it and its creators, and make

that celebration accessible to all, no matter how old or young their eyes.

23

Information about Building not really tied To the building or what it refers to

26

Page 27: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

180,000 square feet! I could not find the name of the architect,

but it is probably hidden somewhere. Docents did not have a clue who it was.

27

Page 28: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Some signage too light, not visible

28

Page 29: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Water features are cool, but expensive And difficult to maintain

30

Page 31: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Nice use of video/digital signage but Restrooms Arrow too low, can’t see when crowded

31

Page 32: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Some signage well done, right heights

32

Page 33: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Cool overhead turtle art but likely expensive And not a lot of “bang for the buck”

33

Page 34: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Membership sales table as soon as you enter, Not very graceful in lobby context or good looking

Good customer conveniences

40

Page 41: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

I would have told the amazing innovation story behind the Ohio couple who invented

Welcome Hall

42

Page 43: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Literature rack which would be ideal for brochures of other museums etc. is used only for Perot’s own material. Why don’t

museums cross promote??????

43

Page 44: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Large Ticket Lobby

44

Page 45: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

But Too Much Needless Maze of Lines

As unwelcoming as US Customs!

This is all you get for your money. Lost Opportunity to give them a souvenir!

50

Page 51: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Cool Carpet but gateway not in use, confusing

51

Page 52: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Freestanding exhibits in lobby seem disconnected; Why are they here?

52

Page 53: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Backless benches not along a wall are uninviting

53

Page 54: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Inexpensive Fluorescent Tubes above Perhaps expensive metal screen gives nice effect

54

Page 55: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

More lighting detail from around the museum.

55

Page 56: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

More traditional museum lighting: Expensive, complex, often unnecessary.

56

Page 57: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Low Energy Entry; Compare to Walmart!

57

And Now to the Exhibits!

64

Page 65: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

First Exhibit (top floor) is about Space

65

Page 66: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Excellent use of backlit prints, can be affordable, Finally catching up with Department Store Cosmetics!

66

Page 67: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Clever but probably expensive, Text not visible if bench in use

67

Page 68: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

68

Page 69: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

While darkness highlights images and exhibits, Too many museums are dark on the floor,

Dangerous for many including our aging population. Here they do a nice job of floor lighting.

69

Page 70: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Killer unique standee surround theater

70

Page 71: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

71

Page 72: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Great to have historical context

72

Page 73: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Nice use of humans talking, could be more energetic settings, less documentary feel

73

Page 74: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Possibly useful, relevant “how to” info

74

Page 75: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Outstanding and engaging exhibit where you spin wheel to zoom in and out

75

Page 76: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

76

Page 77: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Here the visitor alternates between bright open spaces (meadows) and darker enclosed spaces

(forests), which we advocate for The Spark.

77

Page 78: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Limited use of big prints, which are affordable and effective. Very little use of

supergraphics and giant text, which also work.

78

Page 79: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Some aspects of museum are highly traditional.

79

Page 80: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Custom fabrication, expensive, low value for visitors, doesn’t really “work”

80

Page 81: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Really out of place in this cool environment.

81

Page 82: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Badly laid out “islands” confuse visitor as to What order to view. Should learn from trade shows.

82

Page 83: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Clever

83

Page 84: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Unlike the turtles at the lobby, these overheads Are relevant to the story.

84

Page 85: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Nice use of stairs but wheelchair and elevator visitors miss this.

85

Page 86: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Graceful combination of old and new techniques.

86

Page 87: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Very nice flush embedded video screens But ventilation/fan issues.

87

Page 88: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

More old school traditional. Some of this may be unavoidable but other exhibits show

more imagination.

88

Page 89: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Outstanding interactive exhibit where your moves make the bird in the video fly.

I would have built 2 or 3 to handle peak crowds, gain economies of scale.

89

Page 90: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

90

Page 91: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Freight elevator doors match theme!

91

Page 92: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Most exhibits permanent, inflexible, costly to change. This could have been built in a more temporary way.

92

Page 93: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Too little retro; allow generations to connect!

93

Page 94: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

94

Page 95: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Earthquake Experience very popular.

95

Page 96: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Limited localization, could use more.

96

Page 97: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Could really use big words, headlines, energy.

97

Page 98: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Tall thin light boxes nice but inflexible, hard to follow.

98

Page 99: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Disappointing, especially for Texas.

99

Page 100: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Nice content but custom fabrication with little visitor impact.

100

Page 101: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Awful given how hot this subject is.

101

Page 102: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Live data is great.

102

Page 103: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Nice multi-image backlit screens.

103

Page 104: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Nice map you can zoom with your finger.

104

Page 105: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Unnecessary theming, expense, little connection with visitor.

105

Page 106: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Unnecessary theming, expense, little connection with visitor.

106

Page 107: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Missed opportunity to let visitors play with controls.

107

Page 108: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Often museum exhibits are designed without thinking about how hard they are to maintain.

108

Page 109: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Outstanding, beautiful.

109

Page 110: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Fancy, expensive, pointless, limited visitor impact.

110

Page 111: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Awesome, good lighting, connect objects to info. Show raw and cut stones. Engaged visitors!

111

Page 112: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Good interactivity. Touchscreen mirrored on bigscreen.

112

Page 113: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Kinesthetic interactivity: no computer needed; crank open the geode!

113

Page 114: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Visitors can see with and without blacklight.

114

Page 115: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

115

Page 116: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

The other exhibits are not wonders?

116

Page 117: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Strong first impression, super signage.

117

Page 118: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

118

Page 119: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

But more old school stuff.

119

Page 120: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Ankle level reading hard for those with fading eyesight, impossible when crowded.

120

Page 121: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Scents, sounds, touch cool but could be better integrated.

121

Page 122: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Large images would be more immersive if they rounded the corner.

122

Page 123: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Rare example of being relevant, talking About careers in science.

123

Page 124: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

And Now to the Fun!

124

Page 125: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

The last part of the tour is the Texas Instruments

Engineering and Innovation Hall. This contains perhaps 20% of the space in the Perot,

but over half the visitor energy and excitement. Totally interactive, more like The Spark,

more like children’s museums, but kids of all ages totally engaged.

Might require video for you to really grasp.

125

Page 126: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

126

Page 127: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Note that none of these exhibits are connected with anything we have

seen previously.

No connect the dots!

127

Page 128: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Very Cool Microchip Light Show which visitors can play with, learn about how it works,

and who made it.

128

Page 129: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

129

Page 130: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

130

Page 131: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Kids of all ages love to build stuff!

131

Page 132: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

132

Page 133: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

133

Page 134: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

But people also like to buy stuff so they can play on their time in their home. At The Spark, most of what you see will be for sale, in an integrated way

with the stories (exhibits). Few of the items at The Perot were for sale, and never for sale at the point of interest.

Many of these things are retail items.

134

Page 135: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Hands on physics!

135

Page 136: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

The Spark will include all types of innovation, from homes and schools to games, art, and music.

Music is particularly important to Austin, and visitors love playing with it! We will have

more stations for more peak load capacity. We will use MIDI extensively,

And always tells the story of the innovators!

136

Page 137: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

137

Page 138: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Robotics! People love it. The Perot had an outstanding area, but The Spark will also have a full

Professional Robotics Field, areas for local students to practice,

and bleachers holding hundreds of spectators.

138

Page 140: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

140

Page 141: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

141

Page 142: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Note that this is permanent, hard to move or change.

142

Page 143: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

These affordable circuit kits (and draw your own circuit kits

which use ink which conducts electricity) are hot sellers at MakerFaire type events,

but not here.

143

Page 144: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Here real research that visitors can participate in, but lacks energy (and participation) of

surrounding exhibits. Needs to be integrated.

144

Page 145: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Cool way for visitors to program a robot and watch the results, as seen at the excellent Johnson City Science Mill.

145

Page 146: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Very engaging Brain Power exhibit, could use more stations for peak crowds.

146

Page 147: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Watch your actions toss up the object! (In my 30+ 5-day museum tour of England, I noted that what drew people to an exhibit

were lights, color, sound, and motion. Retailer WT Grant found the same thing

147

Page 148: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

One of the most impressive and engaging exhibits was this work of interactive art.

There are many ways to do this (some of the leading lights are in Austin). More would be great!

148

Page 149: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

149

Page 150: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

In this energized environment, traditional exhibits draw few.

No matter how “fancy.” There has to be a better way to integrate!

150

Page 151: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

A chance to tell human stories and integrate with science, but old school and boring in this context.

151

Page 152: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Games – a key part of The Spark (Austin is the nation’s #2 game production center) –

always draw a crowd!

152

Page 153: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Biolab looked cool but it looked closed, without clear signage, not clear how or

when to use it.

153

Page 154: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

I believe in great design – my company BOOKSTOP won numerous architecture awards – but spending

without thinking about visitor impact is wasted. This is great for fabricators, and architects and their critics. Public hardly notices it.

154

Page 155: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Visually dense. Not up to speed with latest visualization techniques.

155

Page 156: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Tying to real people, to local employers, tech history is great, but here made needlessly boring.

156

Page 157: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Advertising materials, posters, newspaper and magazine headlines would add energy.

Use retro to connect generations! “This is what it was like when I was your age.”

This exhibit had zero interactivity.

157

Page 158: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

The Spark will use many more quotes, which can be permanent. Timeless and inspiring!

158

Page 159: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

One of Dallas’ greatest innovators and the entrepreneur behind this place.

An inspiring personal story. Not the right place to be this humble!

159

Page 160: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

Like most museums, the Perot is almost humorless. Here, one exception. This does not reflect the reality

of human science, innovation, and life.

160

Page 161: Comprehensive Tour & Review - The Spark of Austin

I do not think greenscreen interactivity is used anywhere at the Perot.

While this is old technology, it can still be very cool and engaging, especially

with new high def content.

The museum in general is not ambitious in its use of video, projection

mapping, gobos, etc.
