T he Executive Management has accept- ed a comprehensive Transformation Plan that contains details of the steps to be taken to ensure that the UFS success- fully completes its current fourth phase of transformation, which will focus on redress- ing outstanding diversity and other issues. The Executive Management has accept-ed a comprehensive TransformationPlan that contains details of the steps

to be taken to ensure that the UFS success-fully completes its current fourth phase oftransformation, which will focus on redress-ing outstanding diversity and other issues.

According to Prof. Frederick Fourie,Rector and Vice-chancellor of the UFS, theTransformation Plan will be tabled for ap-proval by the Council of the UFS at its nextmeeting in June. He said that the plan incor-porates and builds on the important work ofthe Transformation Plan Task Team (TPTT).

“It brings together many different issues,proposals and projects that were raised in theTPTT report as well as other documents andprocesses. This consolidation and integrationwas done by the Planning Unit,” he said.

necessary urgency and to do it well andcomprehensively. The TransformationPlan will also form part of the overallStrategic Plan of the UFS and theQuality Improvement Plan,” he added.

The plan is based on a working de-finition of transformation which saysthat: “Without changing the core valuesof being an excellent university, theentire institution is affected by transfor-mation as a deep and pervasive, inten-tional (planned) and gradual (phased)process. Transformation alters the insti-tutional culture by changing underlyingassumptions and institutional beha-viours and processes.”

The UFS is therefore committed totransformation as defined above, im-plying a phased process of continuousand persistent becoming:• Becoming a world class, engageduniversity of excellence and innovationand place of scholarship for SouthAfrica and Africa.

• Becoming and equitable, diverse,non-racial, non-sexist, multicultural,multilingual university where everyonecan experience a sense of belongingand achieving.• Becoming a learning organisationwhere institutional culture, structuresand processes are continuously andfundamentally scrutinised and redesign-ed to remain optimally fit for purpose.• Becoming an institution that treasuresdiversity as a source of strength andquality.

The Transformation Plan covers theInstitutional Culture, Academicactivities, Governance and manage-ment, as well as Employment Equity.Each one of these four broad areas hasspecific goals and strategies or actionsto achieve them within definite time-frames. Examples of these are:

Transformation area 1: Institutio-nal Culture – among other things,

establishing the factors that would fos-ter a sense of belonging among staffand students; finalising and establishingcampus-wide ownership of the Insti-tutional Charter; ongoing diversity andmulticultural sensitisation; as well asfinalising and approving a proposedamended residence placement policyand strategy.

Transformation area 2: Academicactivities – among other things, stepsand projects such as enhancing studentperformance; enhancing responsive-ness and engagement in researchthrough a deeper African orientation aswell as incorporating Indigenous Know-ledge; closer liaison with African institu-tions of higher education and encourag-ing exchange programmes from and toAfrica; finalisation of a service forinternational student recruitment andsupport.

UFS receives R13,7 million for research

The UFS has been awarded a R13,7million contract by BioPAD, a SouthAfrican biotechnology company, to

conduct research into prehistoric micro-organisms which live under extremeconditions, in for example mineshafts. Thisis one of the biggest research contractsawarded to the university in recent years.

BioPAD brokers partnerships betweenresearchers, entrepreneurs, business,government and other stakeholders topromote innovation and create sustainablebiotechnology businesses. The project isalso endorsed by the Department ofScience and Technology and the NationalResearch Foundation (NRF), which con-tributes to the bursaries of the 17 post-graduate students on the programme.

The contract involves the establish-ment of a Platform for Metagenomics - atechnique which allows researchers toextract the DNA from microbes in theirnatural environment and investigate it in alaboratory. “Through this platform we willbe able to understand deepmine microbialpopulations and their potential applicationin the search for life in outer space. It ismost likely that, if life were to be found onother planets in our solar system, it wouldprobably resemble that which existedmillions of years ago on earth. Apart fromall this, these organisms have unique pro-

perties one can exploit in biotechnologicalapplication for South Africa and its com-munity,” said Dr Esta van Heerden, plat-form manager and lecturer at the UFSDepartment of Microbial, Biochemical andFood Biotechnology. She is assisted byher colleagues, Prof. Derek Litthauer andDr Lizelle Piater.

“The platform aims to tap into the uni-que genetic material in South African min-

es which will lead to the discovery of newgenes and their products. These new andunique products will find application in themedical field (anti-cancer, anti-bacterial enanti-viral applications), the industrial sector(nanotechnology, commercial washingagents and the food industry), environ-mental sector (pollution management, de-molition of harmful metals and other toxicwaste),” said Dr Van Heerden.

The Qwaqwa Campus Co-ordinating Management Com-mittee (QCCMC) attended a

session on the Meyer Briggs TypeIndicator (MBTI), focusing ondifferent personalities, their ap-proach to work; their ability to workin a group and possible areas forconflict. Dr Annette Prins from theCentre for Higher Education andDevelopment Studies (CHESD) onthe Main Campus presented thesession.

Dr Prins said: “Most of thetension that arises in the workplaceresults from people misunder-standing each other. We havediscussed the way in which per-sonal preferences influence the wayin which individuals communicateand act.”

“We enjoyed the workshop whilewe communicated and learnedabout ourselves,” said Dr EliasMalete, Acting Campus Principal.

Career exhibition gives information about further studies

Learners from the Eastern Free State attended a career exhibition on the Qwaqwa Campus. "This is anopportunity for learners to gather as much information as they need for furthering their studies, and againan excellent platform for Institutions of Higher Learning to really market themselves and their programmes,”said Ms Makhala Mfokazana, Marketer on this campus. Attending the career exhibition were learners fromMakgabane High School.

Nine peer counselors, all seniorstudents were appointed forevery residence on the Qwaqwa

Campus, the three residences at Tshiyaas well as for students living in privateaccommodation. The counsellors willassist students with their problems.

The counsellors are trainedthroughout the year to equip them withthe necessary skills to assist students.They are also supervised on a weeklybase by the student counsellor oncampus.

The first training session wasconducted at the Environmental Centreat Golden Gate. Peer counsellors fromthe Main Campus also attended thistraining session. Training includedtopics such as getting to know yourself,non-verbal communication and

awareness, values and personalportfolio's. The team also completed aDiSC questionnaire (DiSC is a model ofhuman behavior that helps tounderstand “why people do what theydo.” The dimensions of Dominance,influencing, Steadiness, andConscientiousness make up the modeland interact with other factors todescribe human behavior). Ms MarelizePotgieter from the Main Campus, MrHerman Veitch from Bloemfontein andMs Helen Pienaar from the QwaqwaCampus facilitated the training.

The highlight of the weekend waswhen everybody climbed the GoldenGate mountain whereafter Mr Veitchpresented a session. The counsellorsreturned home very tired, but motivatedto start their special task.

Academics promote responsible tourism in the Free State

Delegates who successfully completed the five day course in tourism training.

Aspecial national training program-me on Responsible Tourism De-velopment and Planning was

launched in January 2005 by the Na-tional Department of EnvironmentalAffairs and Tourism. Prof. Willie van Zyland Mr Alex Adjei were appointed bythe South African Tourism Institute toprovide a 25 day certificate trainingcourse to selected officials and com-

munity members in the Free Sate. Thetraining programme aims to empowerprovincial and local governments todeliver responsible plans and strategiesto build a viable tourism industry forevery province and district.

From 2005 Prof. Van Zyl and MrAdjei trained amongst others delegatesfrom the Free State, the Lesotho De-partment of Environment, Culture and

Tourism, tourism and environmentalcommunity workers representing allprovinces in the country as well asdistrict officials from the Free State.

A five-day comprehensive trainingpackage was also developed from thetraining material and presented to dele-gates selected from the LesothoTourism Development Corporation(LTDC). The programme was also de-livered to delegates selected from ser-vice providers and the community ofthe Dihlabeng Local Municipality,Bethlehem and Maluti A Phofung LocalMunicipality in Qwaqwa. They formedthe nucleus of the Steering Committeeto prepare for the development of aTourism Sector Plan for the community.

Mr Joshua Khetsi, local councilor, tolddelegates: “Tourism is playing animportant role in the Thaba MofutsayanaDistrict's economy, especially in theDihlabeng community.” He encouragedthem to develop the tourism potential ofthe community to make it one of the besttourism destinations in the province.

The programme will continue in 2007as requests have already come from theFree State Province to train selectedcommunity members in Free State LocalMunicipalities involved in the tourismindustry. “We are still committed topromote responsible tourism from theQwaqwa Campus and to provide thisessential service to the tourism industry,”said Prof. Van Zyl and Mr Adjei.

The Wellness Forum on theQwaqwa Campus organiseda watermelon mingle for staff

on Valentine's Day. Besidesenjoying the delicious watermelon,staff members had an opportunityto listen to inspiring messagesfrom different departments. “Weare very happy to have an eventlike this, where all staff membershave a chance to interact in asocial manner. Our campus is verysmall and we need to network andknow what is happening in eachother's departments,” said MrsAnna Mapena from theMaintenance Division.

The Wellness Forum, thatmeets on a weekly basis, regularlyschedules activities for the staff oncampus. Staff members are alsoparticipating in the health walks onWednesdays.

Debate on Institutional Charter continues“Promised land a never land”

Prof. Dingie van Rensburg, Directorfor the Centre for Health SystemsResearch and Development, writes:

First of all, I would like to raise my“vote” and “voice” against this so-called“charter” – as it stands here. I do sounapologetically, albeit that it mightremain a solitary vote and voice. Thereasons and motivation for this requestwill become clearer as I proceed.

I also request that the document beentitled “Social Contract” or InstitutionalCharter for Transformation. This holdsthe strong implication that those whohave been responsible for the drafting ofthe document should return to thedrawing board and write an implemen-table, not utopian, charter or contract inwhich the predominant emphasis is on“transformation” of the university. In itscurrent state the document conveys mes-sages of laying a basis for continuationof the current dispensation, of cherishingand perpetuating division, of building asafe nest for particular interests andinterest groups, and of doing nothing, ornot enough, in the direction of trans-formation. History and historical develop-ments are euphemistically portrayed as avague, impersonal force far removedfrom blameable leaders, politicians,academics and institutional executives,their expressed and hidden interests, andthe very processes of deliberate discrim-ination and domination. We are patentlycloning the essence of the past in thisso-called “charter”, because it is basedon recognisable divisive strategies andauthoritarianism in a new guise and style.

The “charter” or “contract” is thusneither transformation-prone nor trans-formation-friendly. In these respects Ifind the document, and the messages itflags, conservative in the extreme; anattempt to consolidate, safeguard andstrengthen established interests; and aplaying for time. It is a “charter” or “con-tract” written in unfair favour of vestedinterests, and it is so done in a well-considered, sophisticated manner. Di-versities and several “multi-isms” arecherished to the extent of sounding likeagendas for creating and perpetuatingnew divisions, also motivated by elevat-ed values and principles, and steeredby top-down authoritarianism. It reallysmells like a new version of “apartheid”in becoming. Merely by tabling the do-

cument means for me an attempt to wintime, and to postpone the inevitable –but even more importantly, the docu-ment actually wastes precious time.Forget and refrain from this idea of aninterim or “first promised land”, this“state of balance”, this “principled ba-lance and symmetry”, this “normaliseduniversity community”.

I know too well that this will not hap-pen, and will not even be considered. Ofcourse, I know that my comments aregoing against the grain of “collegialconsensus” and will, therefore, not makeany difference against the stream ofsolidified “collective cultural thinking” or“authoritarian pressure and manoevering”at this university. I also know that thosewho developed the document wouldstrongly rule out the idea of dropping this“highly original” idea of “phased promisedlands” or stepwise “phasing in promisedlands”, as if the historical forces oftransformation will wait for this tohappen. In my humble judgment, this isnot an appropriate document fitting forthe current state of affairs at thisuniversity, and I expect it is also one thatwill eventually find very limited support incircles where it really matters, despite thededicated, but unweighted, stakeholderconsultations, ultimately relegating themore important voices. For me the mainmessage should be a strong one infavour of reformation and transformation- now! Not one of trying to maintain andeven strengthen an old, divideddispensation greatly out of touch with thepresent-day reality out there. I do notbelieve a sane governance body wouldand should allow it in its current formatand emphasis, and even less so a pro-vincial and a central government –except if the focus and thrust observablyand measurably shift to transformation,real transformation.

The entire document appears to beconspicuously informed and written byan identifiable group within the univer-sity, who could be labeled and stigma-tised as such, and with the main aim tosteer and secure control for an easytransition. The “first promised land” isnothing short of saying: “let’s play fortime”. The “eventual promised land” isentirely utopian, and we could useeither Marxian or Christian terminologyto typify and elevate it. But, it remains a“neverland”, because life in reality ne-ver leads to an “ultimate promised

land”, especially not the essential dyna-mism that should characterise a trueuniversity.

The document is loaded with com-mitments to every possible idea, prin-ciple, value or whatever thing – exceptcommitting to real transformation in thecore spheres. On the contrary, the com-mitments reflect rather a desire toprotect all those established values andprinciples which have prevailed andworked divisively to this point in time.These portray and create halos whichcannot really be opposed or agitatedagainst. And precisely for that reasonthe urgency for transformation is con-cealed, and with a tendency forreprimanding those who would dare tooppose or agitate against the statedprinciples and values. The elevated“academic”, “scholarly”, “social”,“cultural”, “linguistic” halos effectivelydistract from transformation and themundane need and urgency for it – orso it looks or is hoped for. Withbeautifully sounding words, trying tocover as many as possible adjectives,verbs and nouns in the dictionary indepicting and cherishing commitmentsand values of every possible nature,the document, in fact, steers well clearof urgent transformation itself, and thusbecomes no more than an emptyexercise in high-brow academicverbosity. At the same time, it becomesa potent mechanism to side-line thosewho are not in support of the so-called“charter” or “contract”.

stimulate debate in health care. She said:“Limited infrastructure and resourcesresult in antiretroviral treatment (ART)being ration. This has implications forboth the effectiveness and the equity ofART programmes. Of the 40 706 patientswho were eligible for ART in 2005, only8% received the drugs.”

The main deficiency of the so-called “charter” is that it lacks con-crete steps of real transformation,milestones gauging transformation,and measurable outcomes for reali-sation of the transformation strategy.There is no indication of how thelong “wish-lists” and commitmentsand principles and values will betranslated into reality. In these re-spects it will not even bring us to theso-called “first promised land”, apartfrom that I also hope that we will ne-ver arrive at the misleading, utopian“eventual promised land”.

This “charter” or “contract” doesnot portray the way in which trans-formation was steered and driven inother spheres of society. In brief, Icannot buy this “kaf” dished up as acharter without clear directions, con-crete steps, and deliverable outcom-es at definitive milestones of whatwill and must change, how it will andmust change, and when it will andmust change. I, for one, request –even better – I plead for a charter for

transformation. I ask for skipping thismisleading “first promised land”. Ialso request dropping the utopian“eventual promised land” of “livinghappily after”. Surely such a“paradise-like university” will be an“abnormal university”, lackingdynamism and the thrust for change,improvement and creativity. Howdare we speak of an “ultimate phaseof transformation”. Let us rathercommit ourselves to transforming theuniversity, and to accelerate suchtransformation, in order to come toterms with our past, and also comein line with what has long ago startedhappening and is still relentlesslyhappening outside the protectivewalls of this university. The result forthe university will still be real andhard reality - it will not be, and willnever be, a place described in thischarter as the “eventual promisedland”.

Three from UFS contribute to book on precision agriculture

Dr Wimpie Nell, Director: Centre forAgricultural Management, MsNtsikane Maine, lecturer in the

Department of Agricultural Economics,and Dr Petro Basson, Deputy Director ofthe Aids Unit on campus contributed achapter to the Handbook of PrecisionAgriculture: Principles and applications.

This book was published after theFood and Agricultural Organisation'sWorld Food Summit meeting in Romeand the Word Summit on SustainableDevelopment (WSSD), organised by theUnited Nations, in Johannesburg.

The WSSD identified agriculturalprogress as the best safety net againsthunger and deprivation in most develop-ing countries. They placed sustainableagricultural progress and poverty eradi-cation on the top of the global politicalagenda.

Dr Nell said: “Precision agricultureprovides highly sophisticated informationto assist farmers/managers in their

normal, everyday planning and strategicdecisions, which can expand farmers'management capacity and managementtime. Used efficiently and correctly, pre-cision agricultural techniques and site-specific management can assist the farmmanager in identifying opportunities tooptimise input applications, cut inputcosts, increase production, reduce pro-duction risks, and promote greater pro-fitability within the strategic plan of thefarming business.

Prof. Monkombu SambasivanSwaminathan, Chairman of the M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation,said: “Using the knowledge and infor-mation contained in this book, agriculturalscientists can design along with farmingfamilies, a precision-farming methodo-logy for each cropping system in a loca-tion specific manner. If this is done, pre-cision agriculture will help to improve theproductivity, profitability and sustainabilityof the major farming systems in theworld.”

'Hard work anddedication is important'

One of the positive responsesabout PeopleSoft comes from MrDevar Pillay. Not only is he posi-

tive about this system but he also seesthe implementation thereof as one of thehighlights of his career at the university.Mr Pillay is working at the applicationssection on the Main Campus in theDivision: Student Academic Services.

He started at the university in March2003. During his short career at the uni-versity Mr Pillay also had the opportunityto serve on the project team responsiblefor the implementation of the PeopleSoftsystem. “The implementation of People-Soft was very difficult. Although wereceived a good number of complaints,this system is good for the university. It isdeveloped to suit the needs of the uni-versity,” he said. His computer back-ground geared him to assist many staff

members with the problems they expe-rience with the system.

Mr Pillay has a National Higher Diplo-ma in IT as well as a teaching degreewhich he respectively obtained from aprivate college and the Central Universityof Technology in Bloemfontein. He isbusy with his second year masters inPublic Administration.

Prior to him starting at theuniversity, he was a lecturer at a privatecollege in Bloemfontein. However, MrPillay exchanged the classroom for theoffice. “I needed the change and theuniversity is a good environment to beworking in with great opportunities tofurther your career. I would like to someday get back to lecturing. You have theopportunity to touch people's lives,” hesaid. He also lectured at a privatecollege in Qwaqwa.

Mr Pillay caught a glimpse of the In-stitutional Charter. “Such a charter is al-ways a good thing for a university. Equityis an important part of the developmentof a university; it is a good way forward.The charter also gives the institution theopportunity to put policies in place toachieve the diversity it strives towards,”Mr Pillay said.

Although Mr Pillay mastered People-Soft, he believes that any environmenthas its challenges. He said: “In any en-vironment there is always a struggle, es-pecially if there are changes.” His biggestchallenge for now is juggling his work,studies and social life. Mr Pillay, still sing-le, mentioned that there are some possi-bilities for a lady in his life but his studiesare receiving priority for now. “My freetime equals time for studies,” he says.

When there is a spare moment thisgreat Sharks supporter enjoys watching agame of rugby, cricket or playing soccer.

Mr Pillay said: “Our culture is animportant part of our beliefs and valuessystem. Although hard work, dedicationand being sincere are important values,love of one self is more important. Thisenables you to interact with other peopleand to understand them,” he said.

His Indian culture, traditions andreligion are also important to him. Onepart of the Indian culture is food, referringto the spices and curries. On occasionhe has prepared a curry dish for hiscolleagues at work.

Mr Pillay is originally from a smalltown, Mooiriver, outside Pietermaritzburg.His family still lives there. When he mis-ses his family, the Indian society ofBloemfontein, of which he is the chair-person, gives him the opportunity toengage with other Indian people.

USA visitors show interest in management of Asian soybean rust

The Centre for Plant Health Manage-ment (CePHMa) in the Departmentof Plant Sciences hosted five visi-

tors from the United States of America(USA). The contingent included three Vir-ginia Cooperative Extension agents andtwo faculty members from the Departmentof Plant Pathology, Physiology and WeedScience at Virginia Tech's College ofAgriculture and Life Sciences.

Prof. Wijnand Swart, Chairperson ofCePHMa in the Department of PlantSciences said: “The visit forms part of a17-day trip to South Africa funded by theUSA Department of Agriculture. The grantentitled: Development of an InternationalCenter in South Africa for Studies in Agri-culture and Related Life Sciences, aims toboost the relationship between VirginiaTech and the UFS by expanding oppor-tunities for collaborative research, teach-ing, outreach, and student exchange acti-vities in Southern Africa. The grantstrengthens the close relationship be-tween the UFS and Virginia Tech. Thisrelationship was created in 1997 when anexchange programme was establishedthat has provided significant internationalexperience to dozens of students andfaculty members from both institutions.”

China university wants to collaboratewith UFS

Prof. Francois du Toit from theChangchun Medical College,Changchun University in the

Jilin Province of the People's Republicin China visited the School of Nursingat the UFS. The aim of his visit was toexplore collaboration between theinstitution and the UFS. The intentionis to exchange lecturers and studentsand thus also academic and practical

knowledge between the two univer-sities. The college offers programmesin medical sciences, nursing, andtraditional Chinese health. They alsospecialise in traditional Chinesemedicine, herbs, acupuncture andspecial massages. Collaboration willbe developed within the fields ofnursing and health sciences,especially at postgraduate level.

raising activities. The aim of this policy is toamongst others avoid confusion or dupli-cation of fundraising activities in differentfaculties or departments on campus, toguarantee strong, continuous relationshipsbetween the university and existing donorsand to gain support from new donors.

This policy was expanded to accommo-date the strict guidelines set by the NationalLotteries Board. The National LotteriesBoard could potentially be a valuable sourceof funding for UFS projects (charity, arts, cul-ture, national heritage, sport and recreation).

Dr Ivan van Rooyen, Director: UFS Mar-keting, said: “Much stricter control and co-or-dination are necessary with regard to appli-cations to the National Lotteries Board. Noapplications for funding of any UFS projectsmay be submitted to the National LotteriesBoard without central co-ordination and pre-approval. According to the approved policy,all fundraising projects must be registeredwith the Corporate Liaison Office within UFSMarketing.”

The National Lotteries Board has a num-ber of strict guidelines which necessitatesthis arrangement. All the applications madeby one institution in a specific category (e.g.sport and recreation), even if it is for manydifferent projects, must be submitted on oneapplication form. Digression from this re-quirement, may result in all applications fromthat institution being disqualified from a spe-cific category. If an award has been made,the institution will not receive any furtherawards in the same category, until the pro-ject has been completed and all reportshave been submitted (this was not part ofthe policy before, but a recent UFS applica-tion was turned down on these grounds). Ifthe progress reports for a project are not upto date, no further awards will be consi-dered.

The Executive Management has de-cided that the existing fundraising policymust be applied rigorously with regard to allapplications to the National Lotteries Board.A special committee, in consultation with therector, will decide which applications will besubmitted to the Lotteries Board for funding.The needs of all faculties/departments willbe taken into consideration and will beselected according to the university'spriorities. The Corporate Liaison Office willcoordinate all funding applications to theNational Lottery.

About 300 students and scientists attended a seminar on mining exploration and the advantages ofinterdisciplinary sciences in South Africa. The seminar was presented by the Department of Geology.Some of the guests were, from the left: Mr Rabelani Dabishi, second-year student in Geology, Ms AlidaLitthauer, Honours student in Geology, Mr Pieter Mienie, Kumba Iron Ore, Mr Rudzani Maumela, first-year student in Geology, and Prof. Willem van der Westhuizen, head of the Department of Geology.

Maphalla is ’n produktieweSotho-skrywer en het deur sy poësie,romans, dramas en kortverhale ’n be-tekenisvolle bydrae tot die ontwikkelingvan die Sotho-taal en -kultuur gemaak.Die meeste van sy boeke is landwydvir hoërskole voorgeskryf. Volgens prof. Louw vind die publieknie altyd aanklank by dié benadering nie.“Die mens aanvaar nie maklik skuld nie,maar is eerder geneig om skuld op anderpersone of situasies te projekteer. ToeP.G. du Plessis destyds gevra is of dieWaterklowers in Pretoria nie vir homwoedend is omdat hy so die spot methulle dryf in ’n Seder val in Waterkloofnie, het die skrywer geantwoord: “Nee,inteendeel, elke Waterklower wat ekraakloop, wens my geluk omdat ek sybuurman so goed beskryf!”

“Die situasie raak baie minder humo-risties wanneer elke gemeenskapslidgevra word om na sy aandeel in onsonaanvaarbare misdaadsituasie in Suid-Afrika te kyk. Daar is baie voorbeeldevan hoe baie Suid-Afrikaners tot die mis-daadtragedie in die land bydra. Diemeeste van ons definieer ’n misdaad as’n oortreding waaraan hy of sy self nieskuldig is nie. Vra jy vir die gemiddelde

Suid-Afrikaner watter soort misdade naverwagting tussen 18 000 en 25 000sterftes in 2007 gaan veroorsaak, saldaar min persone wees wat verkeersoor-tredings by hul lysie voeg. Die persepsieis dat dit nie die dood van ’n persoon iswat belangrik is nie, maar eerder of dieinstrument ’n vuurwapen of ’n voertuigwas.

“Dit is kommerwekkend dat ons kin-ders met dubbele standaarde groot word.Dit is vir baie aanvaarbaar as jy sterk be-dwelmd is - die voorwaarde is egter datdit weens alkohol moet wees (tog nie van’n ander dwelmmiddel soos dagga). Alko-hol speel ’n rol in ongeveer 60% van allemisdaad, in 75% van aanrandings op dieeggenote en in die meerderheid vansterftes op paaie. In 2002 is daar onge-veer een miljoen geweldsmisdade inSuid-Afrika gerapporteer waar die oortre-der tydens die misdaad onder die invloedvan alkohol was. Die mees tragiese isdie miljoene kinders en eggenotes watweens drankmisbruik in geheimhoudingin hul huise getraumatiseer word.

Suid-Afrika het ’n baielanger geskiedenis van geweld as blootsedert 1994. Politieke beleide is met ge-weld op onwillige mense afgeforseer enkinders het grootgeword in omstandig-hede wat volgens alle navorsingsdata ’nuiters vrugbare groeibodem vir toekoms-tige geweld en misdadigers geskep het.

“Die tragiese situasie waarin Suid-Afrika se kinders hulle bevind, duursteeds voort. Ongeveer 40% van onsland se kinders leef in armoede, tweemiljoen lei elke dag honger; minstens 1000 kinders word jaarliks vermoor; meeras 20 000 kinders word jaarliks verkrag(ongeveer 40% van alle gerapporteerdeverkragtings); duisende kinders leef enwerk op straat; 30% van alle gerap-porteerde selfmoordgevalle is kinders;ongeveer twee miljoen Suid-Afrikaansekinders sal in die volgende 10 jaar weesgelaat word as gevolg van hul ouers sedood aan MIV/Vigs en miljoene kindersword emosioneel en fisies (insluitendseksueel) misbruik en verwaarloos deurouers en ander volwassenes, meestalbinne die familiekring.

“Ons is daarvan bewus dat kinders inhierdie omstandighede grootword. Onsweet ook dat die omstandighede ’n vrug-bare teelaarde vir toekomstige misdadi-gers stel. Steeds vind ons dit onverklaar-baar dat die misdaadsyfer so hoog is.Eiebelang oorheers en die behoefte omop ’n tasbare wyse na minder bevoor-regte kinders uit te reik, kom nie in diemeeste van ons verwysingsraamwerkvoor nie. ’n Swak inkomste word gede-finieer as dít wat ek van my werkgewerontvang - nooit as dít wat ek aan myhuishulp en tuinwerker betaal nie.

“Ek was nog altyd van mening dat dieBybelse opdrag van “haal eerder die balkuit jou eie oog ....” ’n groot sielkundigewaarheid inhou. Al gee ons net die eer-ste tree deur die splinter uit ons eie oogte haal,” sê prof. Louw.

Philosophy hosts forum on African, South African university

The Department of Philosophy hosted an open forum to debate the concepts of a South African and anAfrican university. Two guest speakers were invited to introduce the topic: Dr Achille Mbembe (right),Senior Researcher at the Wits Institute of Social and Economic Research, and Mr Andre Zaaiman (left), anex-student of the UFS, who has been involved in various democracy initiatives in Africa for more than tenyears and is currently an adviser to President Mbeki. With them is Mr J.C. van der Merwe of theDepartment of Philosophy, who facilitated the discussion.

Internasionale konferensie oor Sielkunde-onderrigin Suid-Afrika by UV aangebied

Hou ons kampus netjies!Die brief verwys na die pragtige leiklipkunswerk van Elly Holm wat deeluitmaak van die suidelike front van dieLandbougebou met ’n vierkantigegomkol wat dateer uit die tyd van die2006 SR-verkiesing omdat een van die“partye” ’n werwingsplakkaat daargeplak het. Kan die SR nie reël dat ditverwyder word nie? Kan die SR nie ooktoesien dat plakkate slegs op plekkeaangebring word wat spesifiek daarvoorontwerp is nie?

In die volgende foto is ’n klomprommel ook te sien. Vullishouers is net20m weg! Ek dink dit is tyd dat dit aandie studente tuis gebring word om diekampus netjies te hou. As hulle nieomgee om in ’n varkhok te leer nie is ditnie te sê dat die personeel tevrede is omin een te werk nie.

Plantwetenskappe speel saam netbal

Die DepartementPlantwetenskappe het ’n baiegeslaagde netbaldag gehouwaartydens nagraadsestudente en personeel diegeleentheid gehad het ommekaar op sosiale vlak beterte leer ken. Kompetisie wassterk, en oud en jonk hetdeelgeneem. Dieskeidsregters, me. SadieGeldenhuys en dr. ElizmaKoen, het gesorg dat die reëlsstreng toegepas word. Die witspan het uiteindelik aswenners uit die stryd getree.Na die tyd is wors gebraai engesellig saam verkeer.

Die Departement Sielkunde aan die UV het ’n nasionale konferensie oor die onderrig van Sielkunde in Suid-Afrika op die Hoofkampus in Bloemfontein aangebied. Met die konferensie is gepoog om dialoog en debatoor Sielkunde by hoëronderwysinstellings in Suid-Afrika te stimuleer, veral in die areas van onderrignavorsingen kritiese denke.
