“Avner Dorman leaves a strong mark in theIsraeli music scene here and now. His music isthe most original, unique, and of the highestquality to have been played by our orchestras inthe past season. Dorman is a contemporaryIsraeli composer that grew up in a musical fam-ily and was enchanted by all the sounds ofmusical space around him – of both concertand popular music. His works today demon-strate his personal statement within the realm ofthese influences, which serve as aesthetic mod-els rather than a source for imitation.” — Ora Binur, Ma’ariv Newspaper

Praised as a “fresh, young voice, worth following”(Gramophone Magazine), Avner Dorman has quicklyrisen to become one of Israel’s most successful andrenowned composers. At the age of 25, he became theyoungest composer to win Israel’s prestigious PrimeMinister’s Award for his Ellef Symphony, and thatsame year he was awarded the Golden Feather Awardfrom ACUM (the Israeli Society of Composers andPublishers). Since coming to the United States,Dorman received several international awards fromASCAP, ACUM, and the Asian Composers League.

Dorman’s unique approach to rhythm and timbre hasattracted some of the world’s leading conductors, including Zubin Mehta, Marin Alsop, Asher Fisch, andSimone Young to bring his music to audiences of theIsrael Philharmonic, the Munich Philharmonic,Nashville Symphony, the Hamburg Philharmonic, andthe Cabrillo Music Festival, among others.

Dorman’s music achieves a rare combination of rigor-ous compositional construction while preserving thesense of excitement and spontaneity usually associat-ed with Jazz, Rock, or Ethnic Music. In VariationsWithout a Theme, “Dorman dispenses with a tradition-al theme and instead bases his entire 20-minute workon just a few musical odds and ends — a repeatednote, an ornament, a few Arab-flavored scales and ahalf-step interval. It’s all amazingly simple, but the endresult is sophisticated music that cleverly exploresboth Eastern and Western sonic worlds” (John Pitcher,Nashville Scene).

Masterful in his innovative use of percussion,Dorman’s two percussion concerti are quickly becom-ing staples of the repertoire. Zubin Mehta led the pre-miere of his double percussion concerto, Spices,Perfumes, Toxins!, with the Israel PhilharmonicOrchestra and subsequently performed it with the UBSVerbier Festival Orchestra Mr. Mehta will present themuch anticipated US premiere of this piece with theNew York Philharmonic and PercaDu in March 2009.His percussion concerto, Frozen in Time, tore audi-ences from their seats in an overwhelming standingovation at Hamburg Philharmonic’s world premiere, with Martin Grubinger as percussion soloist. Dormanhas made significant contributions to the repertoire ofother unique instruments and ensembles in hisMandolin Concerto, Piccolo Concerto, SaxophoneConcerto, Concerto for Violin and a Rock Band, andBoaz for soprano, harp, and two pianos.

A pianist himself and an avid devotee of chambermusic, Dorman has composed two String Quartets, aViolin Sonata (premiered in Carnegie’s Weill RecitalHall), a piano and woodwind quintet titled JerusalemMix (commissioned by the Jerusalem InternationalMusic Festival and the Chicago Chamber Musicians),two Piano Trios, and numerous works for piano solo.In 2005, Naxos released a recording of Eliran Avniperforming Dorman’s piano works to wide acclaim.

Born in 1975, Avner Dorman completed his Doctoraldegree as a C.V. Starr fellow at the Juilliard Schoolwhere he studied with John Corigliano and hisMaster’s degree at Tel Aviv University where hemajored in music, musicology, and physics and stud-ied with former Soviet composer Josef Bardanashvili.Dorman was a composition fellow at the TanglewoodMusic Center and served as composer in residencefor The Israel Camerata from 2001 through 2003.

Avner Dorman’s music is published exclusively by G. Schirmer.
