The Alea “dimension editor” lets you restructure your dimension hierarchies with drag and drop ease. In the following demonstration we will create a new consolidated element in our REGION dimension.

We will then see how this change is automatically integrated into the dimension browser. We will also show how this new consolidation becomes a part of our Alea hypercube.

Now that we have added this new consolidated element “German Speaking Countries” to our REGION dimension, it has become an integral part of our Alea database.

We will demonstrate this with an Excel report that is linked to the TOTSALES hypercube, which uses the REGION dimension.

Excel is the front-end to Alea meaning that Alea is seamlessly integrated into an environment with

which you are intimately familiar. Not only do you access all of Alea’s data modeling functionality via

Excel, Alea's syntax for defining business rules is very similar to the Excel syntax to which you have

top of a Alea formula, the formula isn't overwritten, rather the number you type is sent to the

database (assuming you have permission to change it). This makes writing powerful data-entry

screens as simple as building an Excel sheet.

Make your sheets variable: build one report and have it show data for multiple regions or products

simply by changing a name in one cell of the sheet. Double click on your Excel sheet to get a list

of the elements from a particular dimension and pop your selection into the appropriate cell.
