Complex

A complex sentence is made from 1 independent clause and 1 or more dependent

clauses.1 ind + 1 dep= ComplexExamples: 1. Because it is raining, we will not go outside after

lunch. 2. I am not hungry since I had a big breakfast this

morning.

Remember

• Dependent Clauses will start with a subordinating conjunction (After, Although, As Long As, As, As if, Because, Before, Even though, If, Since, Unless, Until, When, Where, While, etc.)

• OR Dependent Clauses will start with a Relative Pronoun (Who, Whom, Whose, That, Which, Whatever, whichever, whoever, whomever)

• Since it is hot, the ice cream will probably melt quickly.

• It is sunny, but it is raining. • I am hungry because I skipped breakfast. • We will go to McDonalds, and we will order

Big Macs. • We can go to the movies as long as it is okay

with my parents.

Punctuation

1. If the dependent clause comes last, do NOT add a comma

rain stopped.

2. If the dependent clause comes first, use a comma between the clauses.

Example1. Since it is sunny, we should have a picnic!

3. If the dependent clause interrupts the independent clause, surround it with commas

Simple vs. Compound vs. Complex

Simple:It is cold and rainy. Compound:It is cold, and it is also rainy. Complex:Because it is cold and rainy, we will stay inside.
