Fire is one of the most underestimated of allrisks. A fire can break out anywhere – theimportant thing is how fast it can be detectedand extinguished. For over 100 years, the Minimax Group hasbeen a firm global leader in fire protection.

Safety through technology: in power stations, paint spraying and wind energy plants, woodprocessing, logistic warehouses, server roomsand on ships – wherever there is a risk of fire, Minimax has a range of individual solutions toensure optimal protection for people, machines, buildings and the environment. As an inter na -tionally active provider of integrated solutions,Minimax offers all fire protection concepts from

one single supplier: from simple fire extin -guishers all the way to the most cutting-edgeautomatic extinguishing systems.

Our quality is tested regularly – for us, a matterof course; for our clients and many admissionentities, the guarantee for safe fire protectionsolutions which comply with all applicable regu-lations. Intensive development work carried outin its own fire protection research centre ensuresthat the company will continue to develop trend-setting, innovative solutions well into the future.A comprehensive service – from training throughmaintenance all the way to fault management –completes the Minimax offer.

Research for a fire-proof future

Every year fires claim many human lives, inaddition to billions of dollars in assets. In 1967,Minimax set up the “Fire Research Center”, inorder to provide new impulses for systematicfire protection research. Since then, full-scaleemergencies have been staged here in keepingwith the motto “We have a fire, so you don’t”.

The fire hall and the technical centre have beenrenewed in 2009. Now, a fire test room with anarea of 320 m2 and a height of up to 15 m is

available for tests. Through integration of amobile suspended ceiling, the ceiling height canbe lowered with minimal effort to 2 m.

In addition to this, some 14 kilometres from the Minimax Mobile Services headquarters inBad Urach, Minimax boasts a fire research centre stretching 2500 square metres.

Sprinkler systems are self-acting fire extinguish -ing systems having an uncomplicated as well asafe functioning principle. A network of pipingand sprinkler heads is installed throughout theareas of the building requiring protection and isconstantly under pressure. Under normal condi-tions the sprinkler head is closed off by a liquid-filled bulb. If due to the effects of a fire, theambient temperature in the immediate vicinityrises by approximately 30 °C above the maxi-mum temperature expected under normal con -ditions, the glass bulb bursts. The pressurizedextinguishing water then flows through thepiping into the sprinkler head and the resultingwater jet hits the spray plate which diverts thespray to the areas to be covered. At the sametime the water flow in the piping network tripsthe alarm systems. When the fire is extinguishedyou replace the sprinkler that was activated andthe system is ready for operation again.

In order to provide effective solutions for thediverse variety of fire risks, Minimax sprinklersare offered in a range of versions with specialspraying characteristics. All sprinkler systemcomponents are also available as part of theMinimax product portfolio.

The different types of systems, such as wet ordry systems or pre-controlled dry systems, areadapted to meet specific criteria, for instanceplaces prone to frost or special risk areas.

Minifog Minimax water mist technology for a wide range of applications

Minifog is suitable for various applications, whether for protection of rooms or of objects.Minifog extinguishing technology features ex -tremely efficient exploitation of the physicalproperties of water. The extinguishing water isapplied through special nozzles or sprinklers asa water mist system so that the total surfacearea of the extinguishing water is multipliedmany times by fine droplet formation. Thewater entrains the heat from the fire particularlyefficiently and so the base of the fire and itssurroundings are immediately cooled effectively.

Also evaporation of the extinguishing water inthe fire captures a great deal of additional latentheat and at the same time the steam producedimpedes the supply of oxygen to the base of thefire: The reduction of the oxygen concentrationin the immediate vicinity of the flame zoneresults in an additional smothering effect. Thearrangement of the nozzles and the optimaldroplet formation mean that the base of the fireis still reached even if there are inhibiting fac-tors such as thermal currents or air movement.

Water spray systems

If conditions are such that extremely rapidspread ing of a fire can be expected, thenMinimax water-spray extinguishing systems canprovide maximum safety. Water-spray extinguish-ing systems operate with open extinguisher noz -zles which, in the event of fire, distribute theextinguishing water over the entire protectedarea, the quantity of extinguishant neededbeing minimal. Spray extinguishing increases thesurface area of the extinguishing water, entrainsthe heat of combustion and therefore cools thecombustible substance. In addition to this cool -ing effect there is a smothering effect becausethe steam produced impedes the oxygen supplyto the base of the fire.

Water-spray extinguishing systems are designedfor space or equipment protection. In the caseof space protection the extinguishing water isdistributed evenly across the whole area of thefire hazard. The extinguishing nozzles are there-fore arranged evenly spaced at ceiling level. Inthe case of equipment protection systems, de -fined objects particularly subject to fire hazardare provided with water spray for protection orfor preventive cooling. The extinguishing noz -zles are therefore arranged to be specificallyaimed at the object. For tall objects they mayalso be installed at several levels. In the event

Extinguishing water technology

Extinguishing water technology is an indispens-able part of preventive fire protection. Water isthe no. 1 extinguishant and as drinking water itis also an important resource for our world. Therefore the specific requirements imposed on planning and design of systems, which aredirectly connected to the drinking water supply, are very high. Minimax extinguishing water sys -tems correspond to valid standards as well asthe statutory provisions and guarantee high estpossible safety.

After completing all the necessary research,Minimax is now ready to put three of its ownproducts (a compact pressure booster and fillingand draining devices) onto the market underthe 'maximat' brand name.

Minimax also offers a lot of different com -ponents of extinguishing water systems, forexample fire extinguishing hose connectingequipment (wall hydrants), above-ground andunderfloor hydrants and more.

OVERVIEWWater spray systems /Extinguishing water technology

of a fire, the smoke/gas-entraining, cooling andradiant heat-reflecting effect of a water-sprayextinguishing system also provides excellentprotection for personnel.

Distribution of the extinguishing water is deter-mined by the number, size and spray-characteris-tics of the nozzles and arranged to suit theobjects and areas to be protected.

Storage facilities, incineration plants, refineriesor plastics/tyre depots have one thing in com-mon: they pose a special risk. When flammableliquids or plastics catch fire, the fire spreadsvery quickly and toxic combustion gases areemitted. This results in damages that cost mil -lions as well as environmental pollution. Foamextinguishing systems are the most effective fireprotection for this risk area.

Extinguishing foam is a highly effective mixtureof water, foaming agent and air. A stable foamingagent percentage is added to the water flowwith admixture devices. The produced mixture isfoamed with air in subsequent foam generators. The foaming degree depends on the capacity ofthe used foam generator, the foaming agentand the foaming agent admixture rate. In caseof a low air intake a wet, heavy extinguishing

foam is produced (low expansion foam). If theair percentage is increased, the foam becomesdrier and thus lighter (medium and high expan-sion foam). The air foam utilizes different extin-guishing effects: cooling, suffocating, separating, covering, restraining and displacing – each onealone or together with others they provide aquick extinguishing success.

With a versatile foaming agent range, Minimaxoffers safe and flexible application. As an exclusive manufacturer, Minimax suppliessprinklers for the production of low expansionfoam. Minimax also specialises in stainless steelnozzles for low expansion foam extinguishingsystems. Perfectly aligned components are supplied in line with the individual needs of clients and according to respective fire protec-tion requirements.

Large-scale powder extinguishing systems

If several rooms and objects are to be protectedby powder extinguishing systems, one centralpowder supply in pressure-proof steel tanks isrecommended for all areas to be protected. Upto 4,000 kg of powder can be stored in onesuch tank.

Powder extinguishing systems

Powder extinguishing systems are permanentlyinstalled fire extinguishing systems. Extinguish -ing powders are highly efficient and fast-actingextinguishing agents. The sudden three-dimen-sion extinguishing effect of the powder cloudsis due to the smothering effect and the anti-catalytic effect, a chemical intervention in thecombustion process. Extinguishing powdersconsist essentially of non-toxic inorganic salts, which are mixed with impregnation and pouringagents. The extinguishing powders are used forfires involving solid, liquid and gaseous materi-als and for metal fires.

Permanent inerting

The principle of permanent inerting is to per -manently lower the oxygen concentration of the air so that fire cannot break out in the firstplace. The Permatec fire prevention systemoffers optimum fire protection when the areas to be protected are not frequented by peopleand have a relatively high density for reasons ofenergy, climate or safety technology. In suchareas the best possible fire protection is thePermatec system: active fire prevention. Due tothe controlled supply of nitrogen, the Permatecfire prevention system keeps the oxygen con-tent of the air in the protected air at a reducedlevel. The nitrogen displaces the calculated pro-portion of oxygen, resulting in a fire-proofatmosphere.

The nitrogen for reducing the oxygen is pro -duced economically by a nitrogen generatordirectly in the Permatec fire prevention system. The monitoring and control unit of thePermatec fire prevention system constantly controls the oxygen content of the air.

Small-scale powder extinguishing systems

Small-scale extinguishing systems are recom-mended for objects requiring limited protection.Such powder extinguishing systems have beenstandardized in design and size for a number ofsimilar objects, which minimizes the cost. Pre -ferred areas of application are exhauster hoods, exhaust air ducts, lab experiment facilities, etc.
