OBJECTIVE Generally formulation scientists, researchers and M. Pharm. students do initiate drug-excipient compatibility studies by performing the DSC and XRD analysis of API and excipients during preformulation. But when it comes to interpretation of the data obtained, it becomes difficult to decode the valuable information which is hiding in it due to lack of technical expertise. The basic intent of this seminar/workshop is to share the insights of analytical tools i.e. DSC and XRD, their principle, pharmaceutical applications and more precisely, to simplify the interpretation of the DSC and XRD spectra in order to improve the technical competency of participants which will reflect in successful preformulation studies. ABOUT THE SEMINAR Complete characterization and understanding of physicochemical interactions of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in the dosage forms is an integral part of preformulation stage of new dosage form development. Although excipients are pharmacologically inert, they can interact with drugs in the dosage form to affect drug product stability in physical aspects such as organoleptic properties, dissolution slow down or chemically by causing drug degradation. Drug excipient compatibility studies (DECS) helps in predicting the possible interactions before formulating the final dosage form. DECS data is essential for IND (investigational new drug) submission. Now, USFDA has made it compulsory to submit DECS data for new formulation before its approval. DSC with the support of X-ray Diffraction is used as screening technique for the compatibility testing of drug with excipient. X-ray diffraction is widely used in determination of structure of crystals and degree of crystallinity of pharmaceuticals. It is a technique of choice to identify different polymorphic forms. ABOUT THE SEMINAR

Complete characterization and understanding of

physicochemical interactions of an active

pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in the dosage

forms is an integral part of preformulation stage

of new dosage form development. Although

excipients are pharmacologically inert, they can

interact with drugs in the dosage form to affect

drug product stability in physical aspects such as

organoleptic properties, dissolution slow down or

chemically by causing drug degradation. Drug

excipient compatibility studies (DECS) helps in

predicting the possible interactions before

formulating the final dosage form. DECS data is

essential for IND (investigational new drug)

submission. Now, USFDA has made it compulsory

to submit DECS data for new formulation before

its approval. DSC with the support of X-ray

Diffraction is used as screening technique for the

compatibility testing of drug with excipient. X-ray

diffraction is widely used in determination of

structure of crystals and degree of crystallinity of

pharmaceuticals. It is a technique of choice to

identify different polymorphic forms.

ABOUT COLLEGE

The college was established in 2004 in thesprawling CHM campus as a proud addition tothe Institutes managed by Hyderabad (Sind)National Collegiate Board. The college initiallyconducted the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.)course. Over the years the college grew instrength, crossing many milestones and soonbecoming well known for its discipline and highacademic standards. With excellentinfrastructure, committed and knowledgeablefaculty, hard working non-teaching staff and aconducive environment for teaching learningprocess as its corner stones, the college built astrong undergraduate program. This is reflectedin consistently excellent performance of thestudents at the University and competitiveexaminations and has transpired in goodplacement and career progression of thegraduating students. Bolstered by the success ofthe B. Pharm. program and with encouragementfrom the management, the college extendeditself to begin the Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm.) courses in specializations ofPharmaceutics, Quality Assurance,Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Chemistry
