4a. The Power of Analytics: Ideas to Improve Performance

Asha Saxena Professor, Columbia Business School, CEO of ACULYST Corp.

Healthcare organizations need to consider how they can optimize the use of analytics internally and across the entire healthcare ecosystem to ultimately improve outcomes for the patient and create operational efficiencies for improved quality of care, reduce cost and monitor profitability. Two thirds of healthcare organizations consider analytics as a high priority and have an analytics strategy or road map in place. 74% of organizations indicated that they have had limited success at integrating analytics capabilities and results, and 67% of organizations plan to provide education and training opportunities for internal analytical staff.

This session will provide insights on how to define the enabling analytics strategy, enable the integration of analytics results into your business processes and discuss the adoption of analytics.

4b. Clinical Documentation ‘Integrity’ must be the #1 FOCUS of your Clinical Documentation Value Chain

Bonnie Cassidy, RHIA, FAHIMA Vice President of Consulting, nThrive

There is a powerful drive for achieving excellence in the HIM profession, particularly as it relates to mastering and owning the integrity of the Chain of all Clinical Documentation throughout the continuum of care. From ambulatory to acute to post-acute, the HIM profession stands ready for action. As you prepare for ICD-10 Compliance, now is the time to evaluate and redefine your Clinical Documentation Value Chain. A value chain is a chain of activities that are performed in order to deliver a valuable product or service for the organization. The Clinical Documentation Value Chain consists of your physician documentation, CDI and Coding & Compliance processes. Your goal is to develop a future state Documentation, CDI and Coding & Compliance value chain that is focused on the integrity of the clinical documentation. The ideal Clinical Documentation Integrity Value Chain will cut across the entire continuum of care and will utilize complete and electronic physician documentation.

Where has the Medical Record Department Gone?

Sheila Harris, RHIA, CRM Network Manager, HIMS Operations, Kettering Health Network

Angela Rodenfels, RHIT Network Manager, HIMS Operations, Kettering Health Network

Shauntell Pierce Network Manager, HIMS Operations, Kettering Health Network

For the Kettering Health Network, where have the Medical Record Departments gone? This session will concentrate on the centralization of the traditional HIMS Department functional structures versus the innovative approach of Network centralization. The functions restructured include release of information, scanning, analysis, chart completion/physician notification and transcription processing. The motivation, approaches, challenges, lessons learned, and measures of success will be discussed in a fun and straightforward style. The

speakers will also provide a reality check of the ‘then’ and ‘now’ operations, as well as the associated new strategies for continued success.

12:00 PM - 1:15 PM

Physicians Partnering with HIM — Removing Silos and Creating a Single Pass

Lucian Newman III, MD Chief Medical Officer, General Surgeon Vincari/Gadsden Regional Medical Center

Dr. Lucian Newman is a well-published practicing General Surgeon with his finger on pulse of documentation, coding, and the relationship between the two for both physicians and hospitals. This session will cover processes, workflows, and tools necessary to arm physicians as a means to improve clinical documentation and better articulate the health complexities of the patient. Attendees will learn how providing a tool to physicians on the front-end can create a single pass of information, thus improving efficiency and removing the silos between all departments involved.

2:15 PM - 3:00 PM

Coaching and Communication in Remote Environment

Janetta Butler, RHIA Regional Coding Manager, HIMagine Solutions

Coders and other healthcare teams today were dramatically affected as the evolution of clinical documentation and coding accuracy streamlined into the landscape with ICD-10. Components of change have been remote environments and the communication exchanges between HIM and other health information teams (CDI, QA, and Case-Management) and job performance. This session will provide some strategies on how to coach and mentor staff through these milestones. We’ll identify some best practice communication tips and a coaching model used today. The benefits include better staff email communications and coaching ideas to improve job performance, set expectations and reinforce job expectations and standards.

According to 2016 rule changes to Meaningful Use and Quality Payment Programs (QPP) rules outlined within the Medicare and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA), eligible hospitals and eligible clinicians must cooperate with the Office of the National Coordinator of HITECH (ONC) Interoperability AND Information Blocking Surveillance Reviews. The new rules and Surveillance Reviews have widespread implications for HIM Professionals, who often are responsible for creating and transmitting electronic Continuity of Care Documents (CCD) to Transition of Care Providers, sending health information to patients online.
