ABBOTT NORTHWESTERN HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

2014 REPORT TO DONORS

Compassionate care. Compassionate giving.

The quotes you see throughout this report come from you, our donors. When donors tell us about why they give, it often revolves around compassion. Some are grateful for the care they or a loved one received. Others see their gift as a way to make another’s path easier, or to ensure that they can leave behind something of value for their community. Whatever the motivation, their words are inspiring. We are proud to have earned your support.

ABBOTT NORTHWESTERN HOSPITAL MISSION:

WE SERVE OUR COMMUNITIES BY PROVIDING

EXCEPTIONAL CARE AS WE PREVENT ILLNESS,

RESTORE HEALTH AND PROVIDE COMFORT TO

ALL WHO ENTRUST US WITH THEIR CARE.

Dear friends,

Thank you for being a part of one of the most successful fundraising years on record for Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation. There are many reasons for this success. The one that stands out for me is that our donors and volunteers have deeply embraced our motto: Compassionate care. Compassionate giving.

This motto guided our philanthropy and our work. Our volunteers and donors, along with Abbott Northwestern’s world-class Medical Staff who gave their time, talent and resources, have created this exceptional year of compassionate giving.

In the following pages, you will read about many of these volunteers and donors, and the projects they helped make possible:

• Our Critical Care Campaign committee, led by Ann Bentdahl and Ron Poole, dedicated itself to ensuring the best possible care and facilities for the hospital’s Emergency Department and Neurological Intensive Care Unit.

• Rod and Barbara Burwell made an extraordinary and transformative gift to the hospital in 2014. They inspired our board, our staff and hundreds of donors to join them in giving to support better patient care.

• Dr. Mahmoud and Nancy Nagib chaired a record-breaking Medicine Ball; the Nagibs and their hardworking committee raised vitally needed dollars for neuroscience.

• TeleHeart was launched in 2014, bringing Abbott Northwestern’s cardiovascular medical expertise to communities throughout the Midwest.

• Mobile ultrasound technology is now a standard part of care at Abbott Northwestern, made possible through philanthropy.

• Integrative health is now available at the Penny George™ Institute for Health and Healing at Abbott Northwestern - WestHealth in Plymouth.

Without you, our wonderful donors, none of these projects would have been possible. My genuine and sincere thanks go to every one of you. On behalf of the patients and families we serve, the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, the Medical Staff and the leadership of our great hospital, thank you!

Critical Care CampaignSECONDS COUNT. EXPERTISE MATTERS. NOW IN ITS SECOND YEAR, THE ABBOTT NORTHWESTERN HOSPITAL FOUNDATION CRITICAL

CARE CAMPAIGN IS INVESTING IN THE SPECIALIZED CARE OF OUR SICKEST PATIENTS. THESE ARE PATIENTS WHOSE CONDITIONS ARE

LIFE-THREATENING AND WHO REQUIRE COMPREHENSIVE CARE AND CONSTANT MONITORING. WITH THE COMMUNITY’S SUPPORT,

FUNDS FROM THE CRITICAL CARE CAMPAIGN WILL HELP THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AND NEUROLOGICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

PROVIDE THE HIGHEST STANDARD OF CRITICAL CARE AND SERVE OUR GROWING COMMUNITY.

The need for this investment is critical: Abbott Northwestern must prepare for growth, reinvest in its care providers, and update its facilities, technology and equipment to better meet the needs of its patients. To continue to provide the best in compassionate, state-of-the-art critical care, Abbott Northwestern must improve access for patients and referring providers, enhance the efficiency and flow of workspaces and care units, increase the number of beds, and expand the support provided to patients’ families.

IMPROVE THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

• streamline access and triage for critically ill patients

• improve workflow to enhance safety and reduce wait times

• create needed space for mental health crisis care, telehealth consults, a Resuscitation Center and more

• provide integrative care and healing therapies through the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing

• strengthen the Emergency Department’s readiness and ability to respond to community emergencies.

IMPROVE THE NEUROLOGICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

• expand capacity from 12 to 20 beds to prepare for a growing patient population

• increase patient room size to allow for multi-disciplinary team care

• invest in technology and staff needed for innovative treatments and highly specialized care

• expand clinical research capabilities

• enhance space and amenities to better meet the needs of patient families.

LED BY CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIRS ANN BENTDAHL AND RON POOLE,

THE CRITICAL CARE CAMPAIGN WAS LAUNCHED IN FALL 2013

WITH A $15 MILLION GOAL TO RENOVATE AND EXPAND ABBOTT

NORTHWESTERN’S EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AND NEURO ICU.

ALLINA HEALTH WILL INVEST AN ADDITIONAL $25 MILLION IN THE

PROJECT. BY THE END OF 2014, THE CRITICAL CARE CAMPAIGN HAD

RAISED JUST OVER $8 MILLION, AND WAS WELL ON ITS WAY TO

MEETING THE GOAL.

The success of the Critical Care Campaign to date shows that our donors are energized by the mission and vision of this campaign.

RON POOLE, CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIR

We have been honored to work so closely with the hospital and its donors to bring about these vital improvements. It’s exciting to consider what this means for Abbott Northwestern and its ability to serve the community far into the future.

ANN BENTDAHL, CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIR

52014 REPORT TO DONORS

Rod and Barbara Burwell: Inspiring others to give

ROD BURWELL, ONE OF THE REGION’S LEADING

ENTREPRENEURS, HAS A KNACK FOR UNDERSTANDING

AN ORGANIZATION’S POTENTIAL AND GENERATING THE

MOMENTUM NEEDED FOR FURTHER GROWTH AND SUCCESS.

IN 2014, HE AND HIS WIFE, BARBARA, PLEDGED $3 MILLION

TO ABBOTT NORTHWESTERN HOSPITAL FOUNDATION’S

CRITICAL CARE CAMPAIGN WITH THE IDEA THAT THEY COULD

SERVE AS A CATALYST OF A DIFFERENT SORT. THE PLEDGE

INCLUDED A $1 MILLION CHALLENGE TO ENCOURAGE NEW

DONORS TO GIVE.

While the Burwells are longtime community philanthropists, this was among their largest single gifts. It was inspired by the excellent care that Rod received at Abbott Northwestern in recent years. That included several admissions through the Emergency Department, which Rod called the “front door” of the hospital. The campaign will expand and renovate the Emergency Department, which will be named the Rod and Barbara Burwell Emergency Department.

The Burwells recognize the importance of the Emergency Department as the bridge to nearly every other area of the hospital. Rod said, “The Emergency Department is where many people come through Abbott Northwestern. It’s important to have a good front door to that operation. I’m very pleased that I was able to do this.”

“I’ve seen that Emergency Room in action in all types of emergencies, as well as it being an important part of the neighborhood in which it sits,” added Barbara. “It seemed very logical when Rod said he would really like to support this campaign.”

With special thanks to Rod Burwell (1939-2015).

I strongly believe that to whom much is given, much is expected, and we hope that this donation sets an example for our sons and others.

TeleHealth initiative connects Abbott Northwestern specialty care to rural MinnesotaALLINA HEALTH ENTERED A NEW PHASE OF ITS TELEHEALTH

INITIATIVE IN 2014 WITH THE LAUNCH OF MINNEAPOLIS HEART

INSTITUTE® TELEHEART SERVICES IN WESTERN MINNESOTA.

A contribution to Abbott Northwestern from Farm Credit organizations serving rural communities in Minnesota (AgStar Financial Services, AgriBank, CoBank and United FCS), along with additional funding from Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation, made it possible for cardiologists at Abbott Northwestern to remotely treat patients at medical facilities in Cambridge, Faribault, New Ulm and Olivia.

The funding covers the cost of the telemedicine equipment, including bedside ultrasound, as well as training for the local hospital staff. Patients and medical staff are able to see and talk to each other by computer. Hospital staff can perform ultrasound examinations on patients, and real-time images help cardiologists in Minneapolis diagnose or rule out heart issues.

TeleHeart will expand to include additional communities in rural Minnesota.

Bedside ultrasound: changing how physicians approach the physical examTHE ABBOTT NORTHWESTERN HOSPITAL FOUNDATION HAS

HELPED ABBOTT NORTHWESTERN BECOME A NATIONAL

LEADER IN USING BEDSIDE ULTRASOUND, PROVIDING FUNDING

FOR PORTABLE ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGY THAT IS AVAILABLE

THROUGHOUT THE HOSPITAL.

“As internal medicine physicians, we are finding that almost everything we do with our hands, eyes and stethoscopes can be done a little better with ultrasound in the hands of a rigorously trained physician. This gives us better diagnostic ability at the bedside and results in better care for our patients,” said David Tierney, MD, director of the Bedside Ultrasound Program.

Employees help Liberian health care providers cope with Ebola outbreakAfter the Ebola outbreak hit West Africa, a group of Liberian employees at Abbott Northwestern asked the hospital’s president for help. Abbott Northwestern responded with a $10,000 gift through the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation to the nonprofit Matter. The gift was made possible in part by donations from employees. It supports the delivery of medical supplies to Liberia.

Penny George Institute expands to PlymouthDonors and community members were invited to celebrate the opening of the new Penny George Institute for Health and Healing outpatient clinic at Abbott Northwestern – WestHealth in August. At left, Courtney Baechler, MD, vice president of the Penny George Institute, welcomed the crowd. The new clinic was made possible through the generous support of Penny George (pictured above), Bill George, the George Family Foundation and the donors of Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation, including Polly and Bob McCrea, pictured at left.

Preparing nurses for the futureNURSES ARE AT THE FOREFRONT OF TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE IN HEALTH CARE, LEADING AND CONTRIBUTING TO

IMPROVEMENTS IN CARE THAT BENEFIT PATIENTS AS WELL AS THE HOSPITAL. SUPPORTING THEIR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH IS

CRITICAL TO THE MISSION OF ABBOTT NORTHWESTERN.

Over the past two years, more than 400 Abbott Northwestern nurses received scholarships, awards and support for continuing education through the Nursing Excellence Fund, which is fully funded by philanthropy. This fund benefits individual nurses and caregivers by assisting in their professional development, including helping them obtain Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees and other advanced training.

In May 2014, Carol Huttner, past Abbott Northwestern vice president for Patient Care and current Foundation board member, established Nursing Champions of Care, a giving society of alumni and current nurses that supports and advocates for Nursing Excellence.

Huttner is passionate about supporting nurses. “Changes in health care mean that only the sickest of patients are hospitalized. In caring for patients who are sicker, nurses need to rely on the knowledge they gain through advanced education and other experiences. We need to ensure that our nurses are prepared for the future,” said Huttner.

She also knows that advanced training and education among nurses leads to innovation in patient care and is directly related to a hospital achieving Magnet status. “This is what helps Abbott Northwestern maintain its cutting edge,” she said.
