Y3 Rounders
It has been another fun and exciting week at Clifton. I have thoroughly
enjoyed walking around the school observing all of the amazing activities
that have been going on in school.
On Wednesday we had a group of Secret Agents presenting 1J’s assembly.
The children were very proud talking about their work so far this term and
their proposed trip to Australia. They have researched about the animals
they may find in the sea, the 50 most deadly animals in Australia and also
created maps of Australia (all in two weeks – phew!). 1J also performed a
wonderful song too. Well done to all of the children, Mrs Johnson, Miss
Bromley and Mrs Hayden for preparing the children.
Next week in school we have Steve Biddulph who is talking to parents about raising boys on Wednesday evening, and raising girls on Thursday evening. Both evenings promise to be extremely informative and extremely valuable to us as parents. If you would like to reserve a ticket please log onto www.stpetersyork.org.uk/publiclectures. Before half term each class/year group will be hosting heats for Clifton’s
Got Talent. Anyone can enter and the winner of each heat will perform in
the final. Please encourage your child to enter and take part, it is so much
fun.
On Saturday 10th June, we will be hosting an Open Morning. All areas of
school will be open and it will be an opportunity for everyone to have a
look around our wonderful school. Please share this date with friends,
neighbours and families so we can share our philosophy on education. On
the same morning St Olave’s School have an Open Morning too. Our Year
3 children have been invited with their parents to have a tour of St Olave’s
and to find out more about the wonderful opportunities that will be
offered next year.
I have some wonderful news to share with you all. Mrs Loftus and Ms
Collins are both pregnant and are expecting the birth of their first child
later this year. Mrs Loftus will start her maternity leave at the end of the
summer term and Ms Collins will start her maternity leave in October half
term. We are working very hard to appoint staff and cover, and I will
hopefully be able to provide more news by half term. We are all extremely
excited and we wish Mr & Mrs Loftus and Mr and Mrs Lawrence (Collins)
all the very best for the months (and years) ahead.
This week Year 2 had a visit from the Living Seas Centre in Flamborough.
Marine Biologist, Anthony Hurd delivered all of the non-recyclable plastic
that the children had collected during the children’s beach clean. Year 2
are writing letters to the Government as I write this! Thanks to Mrs Hall
and Mrs Spencer for organising this great activity.
I wish you all a relaxing weekend. Best wishes

On Wednesday 17th May, Year 3 will be holding their Clifton’s Got Talent auditions! Remember to bring in any equipment or props from home ready to impress the first round judges!
On Monday we arrived at Neverland!
We were introduced to the Lost Boys and their
Lost Boy Rules!
Down at Forest School the children made their own
hideouts, dens, swords and arrows!
Year 3 are now fully equipped to fight a pirate!
Watch out Hook!
We are looking forward to going down to Forest
School again next week so
remember to bring in your
Forest School
Clothes!
All of Year 1 had a special surprise swim last week.
Continuing our Jack Stalwart adventure down at the
pool the Year 1s had to travel North, South, East and
West to locate missing Max... but every time they
reached a destination he had moved on again and had
been spotted in a different direction. They also practised their observation and diving
skills, looking underwater to locate sharks, shells
and other maritime objects. We ended our fun
session with a ' dodge the sharks' game and even
managed to squeeze in a bit of filming for 1J's
assembly. We had a
great morning, special
thanks to Mrs Jones
for putting it together
for us.
The children in Nursery have been having fun in the sun this week! The Rising 3’s investigated and explored using water and they really enjoyed learning how to
collect, transport and squirt water. They found out that it went a really long way! On Wednesday some children went to Forest school. The children were fascinated by a
big tree that they spotted on the way and they worked together to see how many children it would take to measure the trunk. It took 16 children holding hands! They spotted another tree and decided if it’s trunk was wider or thinner. They found out that the second tree only took 7 children to measure it. At Forest school the children had
a great time exploring, making, investigating and playing together. We hope the summer is finally here to stay!
2H have been exploring the island of Coll this
week. Our journey through the book ‘Sula’ has led
us to the Scottish islands and we have been
thinking about the jobs that people on the island
do. We looked at an Art gallery on the nearby
island of Tiree and decided to make collages of
beautiful sea views, just like the artists on the
island will do. We have also written great
recounts of our visit to Flamborough and
character descriptions of the book’s character,
Magnus!
We have had a thoroughly exciting time exploring Australia
whilst on the lookout for Max! Although we didn’t find him,
we did do lots of sight-seeing and saw some of Australia’s
famous landmarks. It started on Monday at The Great
Barrier Reef. We booked onto a tour and learnt all about the
famous history of one of the world’s seven wonders! On
Tuesday we packed our bags and headed in land, ending up at Uluru near
Alice Springs. When we got there, we realised we weren’t able to climb it as
it was very sacred so eventually, we decided to move on. After a long time
travelling, we stumbled upon the Sydney Opera House- it was incredible!
Amongst the travelling, we created our own landmarks and had a go at
baking Australia’s famous Anzac biscuits! It’s been an exciting mission but
Max is definitely not in Australia! We wonder where we will be sent
next…
Today the children decorated a wooden tree each, they looked fantastic. Well done to everyone. See you next week.
Mrs Deri-Clark
This week our search for Jack has moved to Egypt amongst the valley of the kings. Another letter arrived on Monday
from Jack explaining his brother had been spotted near the pyramids. In and out of the classroom we have been building pyramids out of Lego and blocks. We discovered they are built to a pattern and have had to use our maths skills to help us calculate how many bricks are needed in each layer just like the master builders in Egypt must have done (except they had to work without Numicon to help them!) We have also been learning about hieroglyphs; now that we are such good code crackers we are able to decipher the -
hieroglyphs to write our own names and messages to each other. We have even printed our own cartouches which look like ancient papyrus. Sand features prominently in Egypt and has also been a feature in our classroom too learning how to build with the right consistency to make sand bricks as well as making our own sand timers.
Forest School in Year 1
Please could children in Year 1
make sure they have their
wellies in school as well as a
sun hat and long trousers or
leggings of a light material for
Forest School. There are lots of
nettles at Forest School and
bare legs can get stung
easily. As the weather gets
warmer it becomes
uncomfortable for waterproofs.
Now that the sunshine has finally arrived please can
we remind you about a few things concerning sun safety?:
Children should come to school wearing sunscreen -there
are good 8 hour ones available.
Please apply this before they arrive in the school building.
They should all also have a school sun cap with them.
On very hot days we will help the Nursery and Reception
children reapply sun cream to themselves. The school will
supply sun cream which is Nivea. This avoids the need for
multiple bottles of sun cream
and streamlines the process of
applying sun cream.
If your child has an allergy to
sun cream then please inform
your child’s teacher.
