Key AssumptionsAll students and independent school cohortPerformance level results, QCEA 2005, 2006, 2007

• Results for “All students” includes any student with:– a valid score – attending any Independent school that year– all cohorts aggregated – “All Students” includes approximately

• 4,000 students in 2005 • 12,000 students in 2006 • 17,000 students in 2007

• Results for independent school cohort analyses includes only students who:– were promoted one grade each academic year, from grades 4 to 11– attended a school, within the same school cohort, across all possible years

• for all years from the opening year of the cohort to the present• for all years the student was in grades 4 to 11

Summary of Results: QCEA 2005, 2006, 2007 Performance level results: all students and independent school cohortAll students• For 2005, 2006, and 2007, and for every grade, it has to be kept in mind that

the “All students” group includes a large number of students who did not attend an independent school in the previous academic year

• A trend of decreasing performance across years is seen in Arabic, mathematics, and science for the “All students” group for most grades

• While a trend of decreasing performance is seen across years in English from 2005 to 2006 in each grade, some improvement is evident from 2006 to 2007

Comparison across independent school cohorts• Across most grades and subject-matters:

– In 2006, Cohort 1 tended to perform better than Cohort 2 across all subject-matters except science, where the trend was not consistent across grades.

– In 2007, as reported in the prior section, Cohort 1 tended to perform better than Cohort 2; and both Cohorts 1 and Cohort 2 tended to perform better than Cohort 3, with a few exceptions

Summary of Results: QCEA 2005, 2006, 2007 Performance level results: all students and independent school cohort(continued)Independent school cohorts across time• Trends can be examined across all three years for School Cohort 1 • Trends can be examined across two years (2006 to 2007) for School Cohort 2• No trends can be examined for School Cohort 3, which only has one year of existence and

consequently data only for 2007• The trends examined across years are compared across the same grade levels

– e.g., Compare: Grade 4 in 2005 to Grade 4 in 2006; Grade 5 in 2005 to Grade 5 in 2006, and so on• School Cohort 1:

– Trends from 2005 to 2006 across the same grade levels:• Performance mostly decreased in science• No consistent trend was evident in English, Arabic, or mathematics.

– Trends from 2006 to 2007 across the same grade levels:• Performance mostly increased in English • Performance mostly decreased in science• No consistent trend was evident in Arabic or mathematics

• School Cohort 2– Trends from 2006 to 2007 across the same grade levels:

• Performance mostly increased in English • Performance mostly decreased in mathematics • No consistent trend was evident in Arabic or science

Summary of Results: QCEA 2005, 2006, 2007 Performance level results: all students and independent school cohort(continued)

Trends within independent school cohorts• These results highlight student cohorts (students who remain together at each

grade level) who appear to perform better than the student cohort just prior to them, across multiple subject-matters

• Independent school cohort 1– In Arabic and English, two student cohorts consistently performed better than the

student cohort just prior to them• The 2005 Grade 6 student cohort, as it moved to Grade 7 in 2006 and to Grade 8

in 2007, demonstrated higher performance than the student cohort that attended Grade 7 in 2005 and Grade 8 in 2006

• The 2005 Grade 9 student cohort, as it moved to Grade 10 in 2006 and to Grade 11 in 2007, demonstrated higher performance than the student cohort that attended Grade 10 in 2005 and Grade 11 in 2006– Better performance by this 2005 Grade 9 cohort was also demonstrated in mathematics

• Independent school cohort 2– In Arabic, English, mathematics, and science, one student cohort consistently

performed better than the student cohort just prior to them• The 2006 Grade 6 student cohort, as it moved to Grade 7 in 2007, demonstrated

higher performance than the student cohort that attended Grade 7 in 2006
