Tan + adjective/adverb + como

We use tan … como to express comparison of equality with adjective and adverbs:

Marco es fuerte. Tomi es fuerte también: Tomi es tan fuerte como Marco.

(Marco is strong. Tomi is also strong: Tomi is as strong as Marco)

Ana es lista. Joe es lista también: Joe es tan lista como Ana.

(Ana is smart. Joe is also smart: Joe is as smart as Ana)

Tanto/a/os/as + *noun + como

We use tanto/a/os/as … como to express comparison of equality with nouns:

Yo como tres bananas. Tú comes tres bananas también: Tú comes tantas bananas como yo.

(I eat three bananas. You also eat three bananas: You eat as many bananas as me.)

Elisa tiene un perro. Pedro tiene un perro también: Pedro tiene tantos perros como Elisa.

(Elisa has a dog. Pedro also has a dog: Pedro has as many dogs as Elisa.)

* It has agreement in number and gender.

Verb + tanto como

We use tanto como to express comparison of equality with verbs:

Carla lee un libro. Juan lee un libro también: Juan lee tanto como Carla.

(Carla reads a book. Juan also reads a book: Juan reads as much as Carla)

Nosotros estudiamos mucho. Ellos estudian mucho también: Ellos estudian tanto como nosotros.

(We study a lot. They also study a lot: They study as much as us)
