Electromagnetic Pumps Introduction

Introduction

Liquid metals are used as coolant in Fast Reactors. Circulation ofcoolant is required for heat transfer and other process activities.

Circulation of liquid metal is done either by mechanical centrifugalpumps or by electromagnetic (EM) pumps

EM pumps have no moving parts and have hermetically sealedconstruction

EM Pumps works on the principle that a current carrying conductorplaced in a magnetic field experiences a force

There are various type of EM Pumps of which the Annular LinearInduction Pump (ALIP) is the most commonly used one.

ALIP has many similarities with induction motor, in particular, thelinear induction motors, yet there are many differences also

A detailed analysis of ALIP requires solution of Maxwell’s equations totake into account the discontinuous magnetic circuit and end effects.

Electromagnetic Pumps Annular Linear Induction Pump (ALIP)

An Annular Linear Induction Pump (ALIP) has an annularconstruction and the induced currents circulates in annular(azimuthal) direction.

In ALIP, the annular duct contains the liquid metal e.g. sodium. The stator consists of three-phase circular distributed winding overthe duct. The coils are placed in the slots of laminated stator stacks.

Annular Linear Induction Pump Assumptions in equivalent circuit based method

Assumptions in equivalent circuit method

Continuous magnetic circuit

End effects : When the liquid metal enters the pump duct, itencounters a sudden increase in magnetic field and when it leaves thepump at discharge side,it experiences a sudden decrease in magneticfield.

This leads to additional eddy currents, in addition to those induced bytraveling magnetic field. These additional eddy currents do notcontribute to pumping action, but lead to additional losses.

Flux variation with depth of penetration is not included

COMSOL Simulation of ALIP Assumptions in Simulation Model

Assumptions in Simulation Model

Symmetry along the pump axis is assumed, though the laminationstacks are not symmetrical with respect to the central axis. But theflux coming out of these lamination stacks enter the annular region inaxisymmetric mode.

Permeability of the laminations has been assumed constant. Therefore hysteresis losses have been neglected.

Electrical conductivity of laminations stacks has been taken as 1 sothat the losses in the laminations are not taken into account insimulation.

COMSOL Simulation of ALIP Aspects not covered in simulation model

Aspects not covered in simulation model

The model simulates electrical phenomenon in time harmonic modeand fluid flow in steady state so called “stationary mode”, thereforethe transient phenomena are not covered.

In actual ALIP the inner duct is supported by means of non-magneticstainless steel supports at regular intervals along the length of thepump. These supports have not been modeled in COMSOL modeland therefore the hydraulic losses may be somewhat lower than actual.

Temperature variation in different parts of the pump like conductor, lamination and duct are not modeled. The electrical conductivity forwinding and duct is calculated assuming a uniform specifiedtemperature.

COMSOL Simulation of ALIP COMSOL Model

COMSOL Model & its Solution

The simulation of ALIP has been done in the following three stages inCOMSOL.

1 First Navier Stokes equations are solved for flow and the velocityprofile is obtained for the specified flow.

2 Electromagnetic force is computed for the velocity obtained in 1.

3 Flow equations are once again solved for the electromagnetic forceobtained in 2 and the pressure developed at the pump exit is obtained.

COMSOL Simulation of ALIP Results & Discussion

The Pressure Vs Flow characteristics of ALIP is like that of a lossyinduction motor

Pressure predicted by equivalent circuit approach is much larger thanthat predicted by other two approaches.

This may be because at large gap for sodium flow, the effect of skindepth as well as end effects become prominent which are notsufficiently accounted for in equivalent circuit model.

Predictions of COMSOL and Mesh/Matrix method meet almostexactly in the negative slope region of the P-Q curve where as in thepositive slope region of P-Q curve some deviation is observed.
