Positive

• The basic form of the adjective

• Examples:– schnell– langsam– klein

Comparative

• Compares one noun or verb to another.

– schneller– langsamer– kleiner

Superlative

• Expresses the extreme.

• It is usually formed by adding an –er to the positive.

• Sometimes there is a vowel change.

• It is usually formed by saying “am” and then by adding an –sten to the positive.

Vowel Changes

Comparing unequal items

• When an unequal comparison is made, use the comparative form and the word als (meaning “than”).
