Brief History:

After being in the Rio-Tinto (SA) stable for 13 years, there was a management buy-out by the then existing (and still current) share- holders. The company was initially founded by Mr. Martin Maine, who has had extensive experience in the welding and manufacturing industries. He was then importing the current product from Australia, and saw the opportunity to establish local manufacture in 1982, when Rio-Tinto had ambitions to establish local companies allied to mining, and therefore, financed and capitalised the new “Rio-Carb” for South African manufacture.

History Since 1995:

The Company has grown nearly six-fold in the last 21 years. The customer base has increased dramatically.

Product Range:

Rio-Carb is an OEM(Original Equipment Manufacturer) of R-C 700 Chromium Carbide(CrC) alloy clad liner plates and pipes used for heavy materials handling applications in the mining, cement, energy and petroleum industries. The product is fully described on our website (www.riocarb.com)

From this it will be noted that R-C700 CrC plates have a wear life approximately 8-12 times more than ‘400” and ‘500” materials.

Company Developments:

• The “MaxCS” (Trade Mark) was introduced in 1999. This refers to the “Maximum Carbide Saturation” achieved with the unique production process.

• 80kw Pyramid rolls purchased in 2010

• New state of the art factory ( 4000sqm) opened in 2014

• An associate company, Aquajet Profiles (Gauteng) (Pty) Ltd was started in February 2000, to exclusively develop the abrasive water-cutting market. Aquajetnow has 3 state-of-the-art machines, the biggest in Africa.

• Two Hi-Precision Plasma Cutters were purchased in 2006. This highly productive equipment cuts our liner plates to high accuracies with clean surface finishes. It is also excellent for jobbing contracts in mild steel and stainless steel whereby each piece can be Plasma engraved with part numbers and bend lines.

• “R-C700” introduced as a trademark in 2015

Future of Rio-Carb:

The South African Resources (Mining) industry still has considerable growth and potential for the future. Platinum, iron-ore, and beneficiation plants will continue to be the focus. A current focus is on refurbishment of existing equipment with Hi-Tec alloys for enhanced performance and longevity.

MaxCS™A unique aspect, Rio-Carb's winning formula

R-C 700 alloys have wonderful properties. They are cost-effective, extremely hard (1800 V.P.N.), heat resistant (up to 500°C), and when deposited by weld cladding have a hardness of 58-60 Rc.

But this is not the final story. Controlling the cooling rate after weld cladding, results in CrC Crystals growing into vertical dendrites (or columns of crystals, all facing upwards).When attacked by wear, these CrC Crystals perform like the bristles on a brush. Long-lasting. The close stacking of these dendrites is also promoted during cooling,achievingMaximum Carbide Saturation (MaxCS)

Our CrC liners contain 24-25% Chromium. This is 12 to 15 times the amount of Chromium in "400" & "500" Q+Tmartensitic steels!
