[Organization Chart] The company is being structured upon a logical and sustainable management and
administrative work flow, being composed of dedicated committees to handle the different
levels of focus required.
The company structure is based on business units, which ensure total quality services. The
major business units are:
Space Content Unit The Content Business Unit uses the data received from the Satellite Applications unit and
provides digital content like maps, databases, processed signals and satellite photos,
geolocated information like fire hot spots, earthquake epicenters and others. It provides
regularly updated maps of cities, infrastructure, land use and cover, population data, critical
infrastructures data and many others according to the requirements.

Space & Satellite Data Processing Unit Advanced analyses of data received from the Content Unit are performed at the Space and
Satellite Applications unit. These include weather data, pollution and vegetation indices,
floods, oil spills, earthquakes and other. The unit is also responsible for the production of
forecasts maps, as well as, reports after natural or man-made disasters.
Research and Development Unit With link to the Scientific Committee, the RTD business unit of ARATOS is providing novel
solutions in the areas of image processing, convergence of space and terrestrial
technologies, semantic web, M2M communication applications, wireless
telecommunications, to name a few. Our researchers constantly participate in scientific
conferences and publish in the best scientific magazines.
[Highlights] Aratos Disaster ControlTM is an integrated crisis management system, assembled of
space-borne imagery and readings, GIS representations and real-time alerts. During
its three years (and still counting) of operation, it has been applied to more than ten
(10) Greek administrative authorities, from where it has received Fine Service
Delivery Awards. The system, which has been originally designed to handle data only
for the area of Greece, has been upgraded to collect and manage environmental and
topographic data for the entire world.
Aratos GreenSSLMTM (Green Space Services for Local Monitoring) is a complete
environmental monitoring system, designed to acquire a large amount of complex
environmental data and accordingly calculate respective indicators for each area of
study, towards defining its prosperity and wellness. The system has been applied to
several important environmental sites in Greece and it is currently found under
discussion for investment upon Natura2000 areas.
The company is certified with ISO 9001:2008 and ISO/IEC 27001:2005.

[Aratos Disaster ControlTM] Aratos Disaster ControlTM is an integrated
system that is being created to be used in
Crisis Management Situations. The user can
detect in near-real time ongoing and past
natural disasters (fires, earthquakes,
landslides, etc.), observe various natural
phenomena and weather conditions (wind,
temperature, etc.). Its main functionalities

It has zero maintenance cost and it does not require replacement of equipment
or occupation of trained personnel to operate it (guards, maintenance).
The supporting technology requires only a small portion of the related costs
raised by alternative Earth Observation techniques (1/5 for small regions and
1/20 for larger cover).
It provides the possibility of directly and accurately detecting fire spots using
Geographic Information System (GIS).
It is applicable for usage in all stages of a fire incident: 1) Detection/ Prevention,
2) Crisis outbreak and management, 3) Risk Damage Assessment.
It does not require special education for the users or new specialized staff.
The system's architecture is open, allowing for operation and interoperability
with other existing systems.
Updating/ upgrading to new services is realized without additional charges. The
process is fast and easy and it can be realized automatically by our staff, without
the user’s intervention.
The overall architecture of the system is based on a centralized design which
concentrates all the related resources on the servers of our company. This allows
the easy distribution of services to our customers at low cost.
[Aratos GreenSSLMTM] Carrying a valuable experience on GIS systems, as well as an ever-growing technical
expertise on satellite and other remote applications, Aratos Technologies S.A. presents an
innovative environmental platform, designed to monitor, assess and manage natural
landscapes across a variety of interacting factors. The company has delivered Earth
Observation solutions aiming in monitoring private ownerships and providing in time
detection of hazardous situations before, as these are estimated by Aratos Disaster
ControlTM and World Fire Alarm SystemTM. GreenSSLMTM, based on the knowledge gained
from these applications, constitutes a continuous monitoring interface able to process and
evaluate complex environmental factors that characterize the holistic area status.
Such factors are associated with indicators describing the health
or crisis levels in land, air and water areas of a wider landscape
and can therefore inform us on the potential hazards (natural or

As urban life is spreading, it becomes essential to measure the impact of the human
activities on the environment, as well as the possibility of having an inhibited area within a
region under crisis, burdening human health. Additionally, given the dependence of global
economy upon agriculture and fishery, it fits not doubt that soil, vegetation and marine life
health and growth are of vital importance. The amount of information acquired from
satellite Earth Observation is effectively interpreted and managed by GreenSSLMTM, in order
to provide insights and to allow decision-making upon use of the area being studied.
Finally, better land use practices and understanding of the environmental status across time
can help scientists define indicators and study phenomena such as wildlife becoming distinct
and extreme climate changes as well as the ways we may/should respond to them.
GreenSSLMTM manages a grand database of climate records which are studied and
appreciated by biologists and experts, offering valuable insights to the scientific community.
[Aratos ECM-PLUSTM] During major natural disasters (earthquakes, floods, forest
fires, etc) terrestrial telecommunications often collapse,
excluding the affected areas from the «outside world». In
such cases the coordination of rescue teams is very difficult.
Satellite telecommunications are very helpful in such cases.
Aratos Technologies S.A. with the integrated system ECM-PLUSTM provides an effective
solution for telecommunication in emergency. This solution is based on the cooperation
between satellite communications and wireless technology. It establishes a communication
link between the decision making center and the affected region, where the rescue teams
act. Moreover, it provides installation of a local wireless telecommunication network at the
affected area, in order to provide the means necessary for the members of the rescue teams
to communicate with each other.

parameters (vegetation, water resources, pollution levels, etc.), topographic data

among regional and civil design, agriculture and environmental monitoring, overall
inspection of the area.

[Aratos World Fire Alarm SystemTM] The Aratos World Fire Alarm SystemTM constantly monitors the entire area of Europe
through various satellites. The received data is then being processed and fire spots are being
detected in real time. We offer a collection of three main services (BASIC, PLUS and
PREMIUM), while additional customized operations can easily be made available.
The Aratos World Fire Alarm SystemTM supports instant alerts via SMS and e-mails, so as to
guarantee early crisis management. Notification alerts include information upon the exact
area of the detected fire (coordinates), reference to nearest found urban spots and graphical
representation of the incident on a digital map.

[Aratos Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems] ARATOS designs, integrates and offers a variety of sophisticated surveillance solutions based
on Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems. RPASs are the chosen solution for many international
enterprises and organizations, as they offer more capabilities, with better performance,
lower cost and more respect to the environment.
Aratos RPASs are designed to process sensor data in real-time in order to send actionable
intelligence data and to optimize the use of often limited and expensive data link bandwidth.
Aratos RPASs being compatible with a wide range of third-party systems can be quickly
adapted to interface and operate with a variety of sub-systems.
[Aratos Pipeline Monitoring SystemTM] ARATOS has recently been exploring the potentials of aerial monitoring, via RPAS. Indeed,
the application of this technology as stand-alone and/or integrated with space-borne
monitoring can provide significant results. In fact, different case scenarios pose such
requirements, where RPAS may well provide a rather sustainable solution, in terms of both
results and costs.
The Aratos Pipeline Monitoring SystemTM is a complete system based on an integration of
RPAS and satellite monitoring, being applied on pipeline infrastructures. The system offers
readings upon potential leakages, illegal refinements, erosions, etc. The design of the service
meets the demanding requirements of such facilities and it supports underground
monitoring, wireless real-time communication, GIS mapping overviews and appropriately

Total Security Process Re-engineering (T.S.P.R.) is aiming at improvements by means of

[Developed Software]
[Aratos Fire Detection AlgorithmTM] The Aratos Fire Detection AlgorithmTM is a model used for active fire detection being
applied in the environmental monitoring systems of Aratos Technologies S.A., Aratos
Disaster ControlTM and World Fire Alarm SystemTM.
The algorithm receives data upon the brightness temperatures of the area for the 4μm and
11μm channels and respective reflectance values. The 4μm channel is far more sensitive to
the thermal emissions of fire spots and the grand diversity between the radiations of the
different frequencies is an indicator of an existing fire.
In order to exclude false alarms caused by single high temperature recordings, a background
pixel comparison phase tries to define the actual active fire pixels from those which are
naturally received as hot spots, while additional reflectance tests are used to exclude cloud
pixel and other non-accepted cases (e.g. water).
The algorithm's results are being combined with the data records that Aratos Technologies
S.A. already uses in earth monitoring and real-time fire detection.
[Aratos Fire Simulation ToolTM] Aratos FireTM is an interactive fire simulation
tool that uses spatial information based on
topography and fuels along with weather and
wind files. Aratos FireTM supports printable
results, extremely fast calculations, multiple/
custom scenarios, accurate results and an easy-
to-use user interface.

[Web Services & Infrastructures] ARATOS makes full use of web infrastructures and potentials, these serving not only as an
additional tool but as an integral part of our developments. Semantics, interoperability and
portability are key elements in delivering our services both internally (company
organization) and externally (full-time customer support).
[Dissemination & Enterprise Networking] ARATOS maintains a strong and active profile on the web, in order to favor dissemination of
its products and activities and to easily acknowledge customers of new investments which
could be of interest to them. For that reason, ARATOS makes full use of web tools and
networks. Our official website is constantly being updated with news upon the company’s
activities and achievements. Additionally, the company’s presence on the web is also
marked by the development of dedicated web places for each product and/or service
developed, where interested users and collaborators can access brief technical and

[Data fusion & Distribution] ARATOS receives and manipulates a heavy load of environmental in the form of satellite
observation data being used in the company’s services (Aratos Disaster ControlTM, World
Fire Alarm SystemTM, GreenSSLMTM, etc.). These are effectively managed on dedicated
databases, designed and maintained in a way to fulfill their requirements.
The company holds an archived record of satellite imagery and land/marine/atmosphere
readings for the entire area of Europe for the past 5-10 years. These are managed and
distributed upon a web platform, designed to cope with interoperability concerns (XML-
based) and to allow easy data sharing among the company’s different working groups,
parties and collaborators.
The platform serves knowledge sharing on both internal and external operations and

[Space Content Unit] The Space Content Unit, the main component of the company’s development, is being
composed of state-of-the-art server components, appropriately linked to a satellite antenna-
receivers being continuously connected to satellites transmitting data from the European
Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).

[Machine-to-Machine (M2M)]
ARATOS has been actively working on the design and architectures of M2M architectures.
Based upon the innovative trends of current and emerging technical redesigns, as well as the
demanding nature of satellite data and satellite-based transmission services, we are
exploring means for addressing interoperability concerns and limitations.
From security and environmental monitoring applications to portability and accessibility of
services, ARATOS explores semantic definitions and ontologies based upon contextual
interpretation, in order to allow seamless operation and delivery of services.
Our work emphasizes on the meta-information of the data being shared and on the
technical potentials of each operational block. Our main vision is to realize intermediate
interfaces, acting as interoperable enablers, to handle different device /network /application
capabilities, limitations and requirements, upon different application areas (different
ontologies).
[Mobile Computing]
Mobile Computing is now an integral part of modern and future ICT. The portability of
services offer 24/7 user-support and opens up new challenges for the developers in
delivering unique user experiences. ARATOS responds to that call and explores the means
for delivering services of sustainable IT architecture on mobile devices.
ARATOS has already produced a set of mobile applications, developed upon the specific
capabilities of different devices (smartphones, tablet PCs, etc) and platforms (different OS
and versions). Such applications are designed in order to host a pleasant and easy to use
interface, they are oriented upon user case scenarios based on satellite services and they
take full advantage of the portable nature of the implementation itself, following the user’s
position and customizing his experience upon that. Finally, our work has also been looking
into the expansion of online social networking to mobile infrastructures.
[Location-based Services (LBS)]
Location-based services have been growing rapidly during the past few years, partly because
of the extended use of smart-phones and other mobile devices. This area of research is
valuable for assuring full customer support on 24/7.
ARATOS explores technical designs for integrating LBS services on mobile applications in a
successful and scenario-driven way, as well as for optimizing the user signal and thus the
final operational efficiency.

Example cases of LBS services may include safety and security, cargo monitoring, situation
awareness, etc where additional extends may also include integration with M2M
capabilities.
[Satellite-based Services]
The delivery of space-borne data to mobile platforms is rather challenging, as these are
composed of complex information packages found in raw formats, non-processable by
regular applications. Additionally, the size of the information being transmitted is very large,
ultimately burdening networking operation and device resources. On the other hand, space-
borne data may carry valuable information for many user applications.
In ARATOS we have been working on the development of a sustainable interface to

Abstract Terrestrial and marine ecosystems provide essential services to human societies. Anthropogenic pressures, however, cause serious threat to ecosystems, leading to habitat degradation and increased risk of collapse, with related loss of ecosystem services. Knowledge-based conservation, management and restoration policies are needed to improve ecosystem benefits in face of increasing pressures. ECOPOTENTIAL will make significant progress beyond the state-of-the-art and create a new unified framework for ecosystem studies and management of protected areas (PA). ECOPOTENTIAL will focus on internationally recognized PAs in Europe and beyond; most PAs are UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites, Biosphere Reserves, national parks and Natura 2000 sites. LTER sites and Large Marine Ecosystems are included. Best use of Earth Observation (EO) and monitoring data will be made possible by new EO open-access ecosystem data services (ECOPERNICUS). New modeling approaches including information from EO data will be developed, ecosystem services in current and future conditions will be assessed and the requirements of future protected areas will be defined. Open and interoperable access to data and knowledge will be assured by a GEO Ecosystem Virtual Laboratory Platform, fully integrated in GEOSS. Support to transparent and knowledge-based conservation and management policies, able to include information from EO data, will be given. Knowledge gained in the PAs will be upscaled to pan-European conditions and used for planning and management of future PAs. A permanent stakeholder consultancy group (GEO Ecosystem Community of Practice) will be created. Capacity building will be pursued at all levels. SMEs will be involved to create expertise leading to new job opportunities, ensuring commercial uptake and long-term continuation of services. In summary, ECOPOTENTIAL will use the most advanced technologies to improve future ecosystem benefits for humankind.

and the Infrastructures that generate it or transport it (power plants, gas pipes), are vital to the day-to-day functioning of any country. Due to several factors, the social and financial European situation, or supply constraints, energy & utilities have become, over the last years, a prominent issue in Europe. In this light, any serious disruption on these Critical Infrastructures (producers or transporters) could have an enormous impact on the well-being of any society. How those Critical Infrastructures can anticipate any threat with the view of avoiding potential disruptions is the main goal of ARGOS project. This project proposal will enhance the capacity of those Infrastructures in order to monitor, deter, and respond to a potential threat using ‘Early Warning Technologies’. Commonly, enhancing security capabilities entails the inherent implication of ethical aspects. In this sense, the EC is highly sensitive with this matter and it’s making relevant efforts to regulate this situation. As a starting point of the project idea and with the aim of being in tune with EC efforts, ARGOS has focus on the development of non-privacy invasive technologies such as vibration sensors. Regarding technologies that might be considered as ‘non full privacy respectful’ such as audio sensors, this will not be developed with the aim of recording conversations (but for distinguish among animals, humans or machines); and others such as video sensors, will contemplate embedded video analytics for 1st level processing (together with a 2nd level of powerful video analytics placed in the local gateway) so they will transfer only metadata instead of images.

The current design aims in integrating intelligent Machine-to-Machine communication upon
complex space-borne databases using semantic interpretation and intelligent agent-based,
self-learning management techniques to enable effective back-end operation and
customized user experience, by resolving the interoperability issues emerging.
Looking into the depths of the problem presented, we wish to address the interoperability
issues emerging in space-borne downstream applications across the devices and operations
involved, in order to enable:
1. Ability of managing space-borne content, being composed of varying spatial and
temporal resolution imagery, radiometer readings, formats and sources, implying
the different necessities of each information acquired,
2. Overcoming time-consuming and highly-demanding processing capabilities,
otherwise being necessary for the handling of raw satellite data (to be realized by
automated operations based on the introduction of self-learning processes),
3. Lifting the necessity of expensive and complex resources for SMEs operating upon
such data, by introducing a centralized intelligence to seamlessly distribute the
information available,
4. Delivering direct downstream services to the end-user, by minimizing the focus on
the back-end, ultimately enabling more customized and interactive user experience,
5. Introducing M2M communication among very diverse devices in terms of
manufacturer specifications, HW and SW support (space-borne databases, user PCs/
laptops/smart phones)

This invention presents Aratos Integrated Pipeline Protection, an intelligent and integrated
system for pipeline surveillance, combining multidisciplinary technologies, notably remote
sensing of aerial and satellite sensors. Aratos Technologies S.A. incorporates the use of RPAS
and space-borne monitoring in order to provide added-value services in the area of pipeline
monitoring.
Our innovation stands on the vision of integrating two monitoring technologies of high
quality, endurance and flexibility and low minimum intervention, unavailability and cost,
both of which however suffer limitations and cases where they may not be applied, or
where additional information sources may be required. This system is using and integrating,
satellite data, data from aerial means (RPAS), ground technologies, and means of instant
action in case of vandalism.
The Aratos Integrated Pipeline Protection system is covering three areas: prevention,
monitoring and immediate action solutions. The overall pipeline surveillance performance
will be radically enhanced increasing local technical and performance capabilities, increasing
efficiency in overcoming the problems in the area, and offering long-term sustainable
solution for pipeline protection.
Real-time monitoring includes sin-situ monitoring and remote setups, infrastructures such as
specialized cameras. The advanced telecommunication used, allows the data transmission to
the central Command and Control Center. Moreover, high level remote applications aerial
and space-borne surveillance enable the complete monitoring. Aratos Integrated Pipeline
Protection system compensates the satellites capabilities.
Immediate action solutions include day and night surveillance for immediate response
actions using RPAS equipped with automated moving target detection and tracking
technology, efficient solutions for hindering oil theft actions such as grenades and sprays
with chemicals.
Furthermore, ground surveillance solutions are provided such as Ground surveillance radar,
Long range thermal and visible image tracking system with laser illuminator, Stabilized
remote controlled weapon station, Smart UGV Unmanned Ground Vehicle, Unmanned
ground vehicles for immediate response actions, as well as underground buried sensors and
multi-spectral, infrared sensors for intruders detection.

5. The software that manages these data and depicts the information (CMS & GUI).
This invention presents Aratos Advanced Data Fusion System. ARATOS – Advanced Data
Fusion System is an integrated total solution for near real-time tracking of terrestrial images
all over the globe fused with information and images of third party devices other than
satellites. The Advanced Data Fusion System comes with a very simple yet complete Web
GUI that gives you the ability to “run” over the globe though time and dates and aim on
specific locations on which you can track information from multiple sources like cameras,
smartphones, etc. This system is using an algorithm of pixel classification according to their
coordinates. In that way combines the images, using this algorithm, and creates fused data.
Once the user imports a geo referenced image then the Aratos Advanced Data Fusion
System is searching upon the available data sources (local databases or web) in order to
retrieve available data of the same coordinates. Once the retrieval take place the data are
presented in front of the user, depending on its front end device and then he is available to
choose the images we wishes to fuse. The Aratos Advanced Data Fusion System comprises of
the following subsystems,
1. Any device having a camera (smartphone, camera, CCTV, AUV, satellite)
2. The software that shoots and sends the GPS data and info (in case of a smartphone
app)
3. The server which should have a public IP so that it retrieves the available data from
these different sources

This invention presents Cloud on Tap System for remote Emergency and Tactical Health and
Security support. Cloud on Tap is not a simple device, but a complete system for direct
human support that determines the user's location and offers immediate access to the
medical parameters and vital data via the internet cloud with precision and high accuracy,
thus offering a lifesaving innovation. It is a suitable system for users with various medical
conditions and records. Its main features make it special as it provides immediate
information in an emergency, for example when someone collapses. After calling the
emergency services the paramedics or any passer-by with an NFC-enabled mobile phone, a
web connected tablet or paramedic’s reader can tap the patient's wearable passive NFC
device to gain access to vital and potentially life-saving medical information.
That information, which the patient has chosen to make publically available via the system’s
web based portal system, includes in his specific activated page his identification, his known
medical condition, drugs required and possible allergies to any drugs, age and blood group,
photo, and any other specific vital information.
Furthermore, when the device is tapped and activated by any web enabled NFC device, and
the situation is verified as being an emergency, it can send a text or email to family members
or family doctors / hospitals to alert them.
The Cloud on Tap System includes also a fully operational Command Centre. This Data
Centre runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year supporting and communicating directly with
user and user’s doctor, appointed relatives or authorities such as ambulance, police etc. Its
simplicity is its novelty and vice versa as it provides solutions to major problems in the fields
of health and security by integrating existent technologies and our own know-how.
The Cloud on Tap System comes with a personalized NFC passive device that is activated by
any NFC reading and responding device that has a GSM connectivity and web access via any
internet navigation program in order to connect to the database at the Cloud on Tap portal.
The system’s architecture is based in an intelligent 2-ways communication of the Command
Center and the user (who carries the NFC tag) facilitating a dual functionality. This means
that from one side it offers active support with GSM/SMS commands and real-time
determination of the user’s specific medical data.
The Command Centre locates the user by combining vital communication pillars of the NFC
reader e.g. a mobile phone (location via Google maps on 3/4G, mobile telephony and wi-fi
