Client: GEMSIGN Project: Brand Strategy for gem dealer.

Commission: Create a new brand for the company L.M.G.Clearly communicate strengths and make it stand out from competition.Devise brand strategy.

Solution:Accurate positioning and refined identity that conveys prestige and has plenty of visual “handles” to increase brand recognition. Consistent yet differentiated implementation on high range of applications (stationery, brochure, packaging, sample holders, press-pack, merchandising, environments) and launch strategy, with organisation of events.

Client: DAVIDE BODINIProject: Website / online portfolio

Services provided: Concept, Design, Programming, Maintenance, Data entry

Commission: An online portfolio that would elegantly showcase the photographer’s award-winning images and clearly present all the other information.

Solution:A very clean and elegant design that doesn’t interfere with the images. Dynamic Flash Site running on XML database and programmed in ActionScript with a flexible platform that leaves as much room as possible for the images. The single images take up all the available space and resize automatically depending on the browser size.A menu bar with all the information about the shoot appears when “called” and disappears when not needed.

Client: PASSONI NATURE Project: Brochure/Catalogo linea Moraar

Services provided: Concept, Design, Materials research.

Moraar

Commission: Brochure for the first Italian line of 100% environmentally sustainable furniture. The brochure itself needed to embody the concept of sustainability.

Solution:Brochure with concertina fold, in order to avoid the use of binding. The size of the brochure was researched so as to optimise the use of paper and eliminate surplus.Printed with vegetable-based inks on 100% post-consumer-waste recycled paper. Walnut wood covers, made from reclaimed off-cuts of the chair production, were laser-engraved with our copy and hand treated with an orange-based solvent-free natural oil.

Services provided: Concept, Design, Materials selection, 2D Orthographic drawing, 3D visualisation, Interior layout, On-site supervision

Vinterio Library

Commission: A temporary bookshop to showcase the different types of veneer available from Vinterio and demonstrate the versatility of the material.

Solution:A library that conjures up a ‘contemporary forest’, expressing concepts of naturalness and sustainability.The variety of woods selected for the bookshelf emphasises the diversity of such a natural material. The structure and composition of the woods was intentional in evoking a tree’s natural lifecycle; with darker shades at the base of the library, shifting towards lighter ‘new growth’ at the top.

Service provided: Concept, Design, Materials selection, 2D Orthographic drawing, 3D visualisation

DeCastelli Sculpture

Commission: An innovative display for trade shows and exhibitions to present the range of materials, finishes and production techniques available.

Solution:Concept, design and realisation of an oversized sample collection. A dynamic composition of juxtaposed and overlapping metal sheets, making it possible to examine and compare the different materials.Standing 3 metres tall, the sculpture is designed so that whole sheets can be used, cutting production costs, while the structure can be entirely dismantled for flat-packing and transportation.

Client: PASSONI NATURE Project: Showroom layout and design

Services provided: Concept, Design, Interior layout, Display design, Window & Wall graphics, Launch invitations,

Passoni Nature Showroom

Commission: Design makeover of the whole showroom, focussing on window and wall graphics, and display structure design.

Solution:Based on the concept of the tree we created a theme around the shop, blending text and images. On the windows we created typographic trees with relevant keywords, while on the walls we used the names and stylised silhouettes of the chairs in the collection. We also developed a special tactile “wallpaper” that subtly reflects the light in different ways from different angles.For the main chair display we designed a system of internally-lit cubes of three different sizes that can be rearranged countless times for variety.

Services provided: Concept, Design, Event identity, Installation, Communication, Invites, Brochure, Bags and giveaways, Signage, Interactive experience

Vivaio - Salone 2010

Commission: Concept, organisation, design and curation of an event to present the materials of 4 different companies.

Solution:Event concept and naming (‘Vivaio’ [plant nursery])A ‘greenhouse’ in which different materials, normally with no connection, coexist harmoniously.An interactive experience / installation which encouraged visitors to leave messages using stickers and pencils provided, with subsequent publication of the messages online. The invitations were screen-printed on wood veneers. We personally conducted the installation, as well as curating the whole event and following every aspect, including communications, signage and promotional materials / giveaways.

Custard Studio is a communications design consultancy founded by Massimo Casini in 2007. It operates between Italy and the UK.

We offer expertise in all aspects of design, including brand identity, interactive web design, print, editorial, photography and video.

Background research is a fundamental part of our working process: a thorough grounding in our clients’ market sector, a positioning study, and an analysis of competitors’ visual assets, will inform our design while providing valuable information to the client.

Born and raised in the green hills of Wales, Oliver studied furniture and product design at Nottingham Trent University, before moving to Italy in 2004.

A creative consultant, he works on a broad spectrum of projects, ranging from bespoke furniture and interior architecture to web design and graphics. His multi-disciplinary approach is very much ‘hands-on’ and purpose-driven, with each detail of a project carefully considered.

He has a passion for all aspects of art and design encompassing diverse disciplines such as fine art, sculpture, industrial design and architecture. An accomplished designer, he currently freelances around Europe, constantly aiming to put his technical and artistic aptitude to the test.
