Securitycompanystrives to setitself apartBy Mark Hansel / STAFF WRITER

Las Vegas casinos employ some of themost advanced, high-tech securitymethods in the world. To quote an oft-used phrase, “In the casino, there isalways someone watching.”

So when Gary Newcomer came to LasVegas looking to start a private securitycompany, he was a little surprised that, inhis mind, security off the strip left a lot tobe desired.

“There’s a lot of security companieshere, but there was nobody putting forththe effort in the appearance arena, theaccountability arena or the training arenain our industry,” Newcomer said. “Theywere just taking business in, servicing it(poorly) and moving on.”

Contrary to his name, Newcomer, whofounded Interstate Security in 2000 in LasVegas, is hardly a novice in the securityindustry. He has more than 20 years in thesecurity business in Hawaii, Californiaand Nevada. His list of high profileclients includes several Californiawineries, the dry docks of Oakland andAlcatraz Island in the San Francisco BayArea.

During his stint securing the island, there was never a successful escape. Ofcourse, “The Rock” has not housedprisoners since 1963, so that probably hadsomething to do with it.

Newcomer set about the process ofbringing a professional, trained securitycompany to Las Vegas.

He wanted to break into the hotelsecurity business in Las Vegas, but that isdone mostly in-house, so he focused onsmaller, boutique hotels, for which he hadprovided security in Hawaii. Hotel clientsinclude Candlewood Suites, EmbassySuites and Extended Stay America.

Interstate Security has managed tomake some forays into the gamingindustry.

The company has provided security forBlue Man Group shows, since the crewmoved from Luxor to the Venetian in2005. It also provides security forAristocrat Technologies, both at itscorporate offices at McCarran Centerand its manufacturing facility where theslot machines are made.

Commercial clients include the SaharaTown Square on Maryland Parkway andTropicana Centre on East TropicanaAvenue.

Newcomer said the company can offera wide range of services because hisexperience in the industry and theextensive training program provideemployees equipped with a range ofskills.

Training for all field associates includesvideotape presentations that focus onreport-writing procedures and generalduties of a security officer and a writtenexamination that requires a perfect scoreto acquire a private investigator’slicensing board card.

There is also site-specific training andan expanded people skills trainingprogram for associates with highvisibility and public interaction.

“If you just want a guy to stand by thedoor, we’re probably not for you,”Newcomer said. “But if you want realsecurity and don’t mind paying a littlemore for it, we can be a good fit.”

The company provides services forprivate facilities, such as Las VegasCountry Club, Las Vegas Athletic clubsand gated communities.

Newcomer said he pays above theindustry standard to minimize turnoverand help ensure a high level ofprofessionalism, both in appearance andperformance.

The company employs an extensive 60-day service evaluation period for newclients.

During that time,site-specific problemsare evaluated and discussed with theclient to identify areas of concern andestablish a mutually beneficial workingrelationship.

Even after the evaluation period,Interstate continues to work with

customers to implement changes that maybe needed as a result of specific securityissues that may arise.

Interstate Security has a managementteam that supervises field employees andassures continued customer contact.

The company employs accountmanagers who essentially serve assecurity directors for clients. Theysupervise the security officer workforceand the accountability programs and areon call around the clock. A generalmanager oversees the account managersand visits clients to assure coordinatedefforts are providing quality services.

Newcomer recognizes that securityneeds change not only from site to site, but also at different times within a site.

During the day, for example, manyclients experience high levels of activitywith tenants, guests, customers andclients arriving and leaving the premises.Security officers are viewed more aspeople ambassadors than security officersduring this time and a more low-keyapproach is often used.

The challenge is to provide the securitypresence that puts the client at easewithout intimidating guests or visitors.Security officers often wear suits or plainclothes on these assignments.

Later in the day, security needs oftenchange to more of a property controlscenario, and highly visible uniformedofficers are used.

Although Newcomer is happy with hiscurrent roster of clients, he still hopes tohave an expanded presence in the casinoindustry.

“I’m sure there are times when theyhost big events and added security isneeded,” Newcomer said. “I think wehave the experience to help out duringthose times.”
