Role Purpose

To undertake roadworthiness inspections and monitor the repair and maintenance of the Group’s Heavy Goods and support vehicles across a range of locations throughout the UK. Locations may, include landfills, treatment plants, MRF’s, Transfer Stations, composting facilities and HWRC’s, and transport workshops.

To ensure that all vehicles are maintained and operated in an efficient and safe manner in compliance with the company’s duty of care, legislative and any other regulatory requirements.

To advise the Head of Fleet and Plant and liaise with the operational teams to ensure the most cost effective operation of all group HGV`s.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibility for the implementation of the Group Health and Safety Policy in all vehicle related activities Group-wide.

Will be responsible for roadworthiness inspections of the group’s Heavy Goods Vehicle fleet at various locations throughout the UK.

Reports on each inspection will be generated and passed to the Head of Fleet and Plant.

Monitoring of the vehicle maintenance records and forward planners will be essential to retain VOSA compliance.

There will be a requirement to develop working relationships with existing in house workshop managers.

Advise the Head of Fleet and Plant and Senior Truck Inspector on issues relating to vehicle suitability and condition.

There is a requirement to on occasion liaise with individual Transport Managers and their vehicle enquiries to advise them of the problems noted and work with them on safety or maintenance issues to bring about an acceptable outcome.

A level of coaching and advice to HGV drivers and Managers on the VOSA best practice for driver defect reporting, driver daily checks, wheel nut security etc.

Report and action breaches of legislative, regulatory or policy requirements.

To keep abreast of technological developments and industry best practice in the operation of road transport.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualified and competent in all aspects of HGV repair and maintenance to a recognised industry standard.

HGV driver licence preferred.

CPC qualified desirable however not essential.

Experience in waste management vehicles and the industry desirable.

Computer literate; proficient in use of MS Word and MS Excel.

Personal Qualities

A highly credible engineer, with strong negotiation skills.

Ability to work collaboratively at site level in a capacity of adding value to the decision making process.

Ability to re-evaluate priorities, responding quickly and positively to change is imperative.

Proven success of influencing at all levels both internally and external.

Sufficiently resilient and robust to effectively manage third parties.

Well developed interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and develop successful long term relationships with key stakeholders.

Must be prepared to travel and spend some nights away from home as per the demands of the role.

Must have a flexible personable approach with good people skills.
