It has been my privilege to serve as the principal to Vani-er’s graduating class of 2011.
This year’s experience of working with such a fine group of students has truly been a pleasure.
Vanier has an excellent reputation for its strong pro-grams and long-standing traditions. Our grads this year have continued to maintain this reputation with their excel-lent achievements in the areas of academics, fine arts, per-forming arts, athletics, technology and leadership.
This year’s grad music theme is “We are here for a good time, not a long time.”
At first glance, the lyric from the theme song may have one believe our grads are all about having a good time but not taking school too seriously. I can state that this could be no further from the truth. So many of our grads are here for a good time, a good time that includes academic success, exploration in new technologies, participation in extracur-ricular sports, international clubs, robot competitions, music
festivals, and many exciting and fun learning experiences in our regular and newly-developed programs.
It is too bad they are not “here for a long time,” as there seems to be so much we can offer our students.
The time has come that our grads are to move on to big-ger and better experiences.
The staff of Vanier believes in each and every one of our grads and feels they are well prepared to be successful in the tasks and journeys that lie ahead in their future.
On behalf of the school administration, teaching staff and support staff of G.P. Vanier, I’d like to congratulate all the students of this graduating class. Good luck!

After she graduates from Georges P. Vanier Secondary School, Emily Potts is going to take a year off and nanny in Switzerland.
The 18-year-old from Merville, who is this year’s female valedictorian, also plans to travel around Europe. After a year in Europe, she wants to go to the University of Victoria and study sciences.
Potts is half-Swiss.“I have a lot of family there and have been there a
couple times; it’s a beautiful place,” she said. “I would like to travel and see the world a bit and see different cultures.”
Potts is really involved in music, and she plays basket-ball and also volunteers and coaches.
Her favourite memories from high school include being
part of sports team and partici-pating in Explore last year.
She says she will most remember “meeting really cool people and having good memo-ries and just the overall accep-tance of the school.”
“Everybody has a friend and a place to be,” she said. “It’s a really nice atmosphere.”
Potts is honoured to have been chosen as her school’s valedictorian.
“I’m nervous, but I think it’s a great opportunity, and it’s a huge honour to represent such an important class and a great class,” she said. “It’s definitely a huge accom-plishment, and I’m really excited to do it.”
Sports and travelling are two things that really inter-est Theo Terry of Denman Island.
The 18-year-old, who plays soccer and rugby, has been chosen as Georges P. Vanier Secondary School’s male valedictorian.
Terry will be going to South America after he gradu-ates from high school, and he plans to travel for one or two years.
“I don’t know if this will happen, but what I really want to do is start in Mexico and go all the way into Brazil,” he said. “I’ve been travelling some before with my family, but I guess I just want to see the world and get a different perspective on life.”
As he looks back on his high school years, Terry says his favourite memories from Vanier are being on the
rugby and soccer teams and going on trips with his teams, hanging out with friends and taking part in the Explore program.
Terry is excited to be
Vanier’s male valedictorian.“I think it’s a great opportunity
to represent your friends and your class,” he said. “It’s cool to be able to tell the world what our grad class is about.”

On behalf of both the teaching staff and the support staff of Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School, I’d like to congratulate the students of this year’s graduating class.
A high percentage of these students are poised to continue their education at any number of post-secondary institutions, and we are confident that their experiences in our school sys-tem will serve them well as they pursue their dreams.
Over time, every grad class unknowingly develops its own unique personality with unique characteristics, and this grad class is no different.
This wonderful group of students have left their mark on this school and beyond in many ways.
Many have excelled academically, a number have competed at the highest levels athletically, others demonstrated their strengths in the fine arts and performing arts and still oth-ers in the applied skills areas. Collectively, they have been an exceptional group, and individually, they have provided endless examples of positive leadership both in the school and the community.
Included in this grad group are the first students to gradu-ate with a dual Dogwood designation. Isfeld now has French
Immersion classes from Grades 8-12, with the Grade 12s having the distinc-tion of being the first French Immer-sion graduates in school history.
Another noteworthy topic for this grad class is in the broad area of citizenship. A significant number of
students have stepped up and demonstrated their commit-ment to serving their school, local community and global com-munity.
This group of graduates has every reason to feel confident as they head into the next phase of their lives.
They have been well supported by wonderful teachers, parents/guardians, families and friends and should feel well prepared for whatever life has in store for them.
Congratulations and good luck!

Karlee Holm is excited to buy all the new school supplies and appliances she wants when she strikes out on her own and goes to the University of Victoria this September.
The 17-year-old from Comox, who is Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School’s female valedictorian, will begin studying biochemistry this fall.
Ultimately, she wants to become a doctor.“I’m really interested in gynecology, but I also really like kids, so
maybe pediatrics as well,” she said.Holm, who is in French Immersion, likes learning other languag-
es, and she is really interested in sciences. She also likes hockey.Holm is excited to be Isfeld’s valedictorian. The theme of the
valedictorian speech is a surprise, but she says one of the key mes-
sages will be “go be great in the world.”One highlight from high school for
Holm is a semester-long exchange to France in Grade 11.
“Just being in French Immersion was really amazing because we got to do lots of fun things and stuff,” she
said.Looking ahead to life after Isfeld, Holm is most excited about
university life and living in dorms and about outfitting herself for school with supplies and appliances.
“I’m obsessed with school supplied and appliances, so I’m excited to buy school supplies and appliances,” she said.
Josh Duncan plans to take a year off to find out what he wants to do after graduating from Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School.
Duncan, who is 17 and lives in Comox, is Isfeld’s male valedic-torian for 2011.
He likes reading, crocheting, improv and theatre. He was in Isfeld’s production of Anne Frank earlier this year,
and he was on the provincial champion Destination ImagiNation team that finished 10th at the Global Finals this spring.
Duncan plans to work for at least one year before going to uni-versity.
“I don’t really know what I want to do so I want to have at least a year to figure that out hopefully,” he said.
As he is about to graduate, Duncan is most looking forward to having a less stressed life.
“I feel like I take on way too many things, and I can just barely handle it,” he said. “It’ll be much easier when I just have a job.”
One of Duncan’s favourite memories of high school comes from
Anne Frank.“It’s kind of a bad thing, but I
also really like it,” he said. While performing, he lost a
lighter they had to use for a lot of scenes in the play.
“I was really pan-icked about not finding it, and I had to make up an excuse why I couldn’t find it, and it just worked out,” he said. “No one even noticed.”
Going to the Global Finals with Des-tination ImagiNation was also a high-light.
“Just competing at that level and doing so well the first time is just so mind-boggling,” he said.

Best Wishesfrom all the Staff
Congratulations to Highland’s graduating class of 2011.
On behalf of the all of the staff at the school, we wish you a bright future and look forward to hearing of your accomplishments.
The skills and attitudes that you have developed at school will hopefully be an important part of your future.
We also realize that outside of school, you have had many experiences in a variety of settings that have helped you become the person you are today.
On this important occasion, take some time to cel-ebrate your accomplishments, pause to thank those that have helped you along the way and then move toward your next goal in life.
In many respects, your education is just beginning. The “real world” will provide many lessons in many
different forms. Just keep in mind that anything of value will come from hard work and sacrifice.
To echo the words of this year’s valedictorians, the world is a rapidly changing landscape
that will present opportunities for those who have the ability to embrace change and have the skills to adapt.
Your opportunity to make a difference in the world is beginning; it is time for you to act.

Highland Secondary School’s female valedictorian is an athlete who has been bitten by the travel bug.
Jasmine Garrett, 18, was born in Powell River and has lived in Comox most of her life.
Garrett plans to take first-year courses at North Island College next year. She wants to end up at the University of British Columbia or Simon Fraser Univer-sity, and she wants to go into kinesiology.
Before going to university, Garrett plans to travel in Europe and possibly Bali and Thailand.
As she graduates, Garrett is most excited to have the freedom to try new things.
“We’ve been so used to a certain schedule,” she said. “I do care about having an education and going to uni-versity, but for me, I think what I really need first is I
need to go and find experi-ences and throw myself into travel.”
One of Garrett’s best memories of high school is a Grade 11 trip to France and Spain, during which they were delayed because
it snowed in Barcelona.“I think that’s something that really initiated my
desire to travel and see what else is out there and fig-ure out where I fit,” she said.
Other highlights are the Grade 12 grad trip to Cuba she helped organize, Outdoor Adventure Club and His-tory 12.
Seventeen-year-old Jonathan Carroll is looking for-ward to making a difference in the world — and he hopes to do that as a lawyer or as a politician.
Carroll, who was born in New Zealand and has lived in Comox for about five years, was Highland Secondary School’s male valedictorian this year.
Carroll has applied to the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University, and he hopes to get a law degree and practise corporate law.
Carroll is excited to make a difference.“I’m looking forward to just being able to really make
an impact in the world,” he said. “I’ve always been inter-ested in politics. That would be a long-term goal, to get into politics. The overall dream would be to take over the country as a Plato-ist philosopher king and rule as a benevolent dictator. Now is when you can move into this position where you can gain for yourself political
heft, where you can really make a change, and that’s something I’ve really looked forward to.”
A lot of Carroll’s favourite high school experiences come from the class-
room, from talking to other students and in-class discussions that turned into pas-sionate debates.
Carroll has also appreciated the way he’s been able to talk to his teachers as he’s gotten older.
“You become friends, and can now interact with them on a more equal level,” he said.

DRUNK DRIVING: TRUE OR FALSE?Students are writing their fi nal exams and school will soon be out. If tests in math and history are important, it is just as essential that young people be able to judge what is true and what is false where drinking and driving are concerned. Getting a passing grade on this test might prevent a graduation celebration from ending in tragedy:
1. DRINKING COFFEE ACCELERATES THE METABOLIZING AND ELIMINATION OF ALCOHOL FROM THE BODY.
FALSE. Time is the only factor in sobering up. Getting some fresh air, having a nap, or taking a cold shower aren’t any more effective than drinking coffee in eliminating alcohol.
2. ONLY 3 PERCENT OF ALCOHOL IS ELIMINATED THROUGH SWEAT.
TRUE. This means that busting some moves on the dance fl oor won’t help you sober up more quickly.
3. NO MATTER HOW MANY DRINKS ARE CONSUMED DURING AN EVENING, ALL YOU NEED TO DO TO BE SAFE IS TO STOP DRINKING AN HOUR BEFORE DRIVING.
FALSE. To respect allowable legal blood alcohol levels, it takes a lot longer than 60 minutes before being able to drive, especially if someone has been drinking for hours.
4. IT TAKES TWO HOURS TO ELIMINATE ALL ALCOHOL FROM THE BLOOD WHEN A BLOOD ALCOHOL RATE OF 0.07 HAS BEEN REACHED.
FALSE. It takes about fi ve hours to eliminate all that alcohol from the blood.
5. ALCOHOL AFFECTS PERIPHERAL VISION, HEARING, THE CAPACITY TO EVALUATE DISTANCES, AND REFLEXES.
TRUE. All these factors mean that a person who has consumed alcohol has lower levels of concentration, poor coordination, and will likely be unable to react properly when faced with an obstacle.
KEEP IN MIND THESE SIMPLE GUIDELINES
• Don’t Drive - if you’ve been drinking, even if you don’t think you are over the limit.
• Plan Ahead - make sure you have a sober driver before the night’s festivities begin.
