Community Update JANUARY 2015 CBD Cycleways Project – changes to Liverpool Street from Castlereagh Street to Sussex Street and Castlereagh Street from Liverpool Street to Hay Street to provide new cycleways. Following extensive community consultation, the NSW Government has approval to start the construction of a new integrated cycleway network in Liverpool Street and Castlereagh Street south. Background In late 2013, the NSW Government released the Sydney City Centre Access Strategy to improve access to the CBD by putting the right transport modes in the right places in the city centre. Light rail and the introduction of major bus, cycleway and vehicle corridors will make it easier for residents and visitors to get around the city centre. The cycleway program is being funded by the City of Sydney and delivered by Roads and Maritime Services. In July and August 2014, stakeholders and the community provided feedback on concept designs for cycleways in Liverpool Street, Park Street and Castlereagh Street. Castlereagh Street cycleway The Castlereagh Street cycleway will be split into two sections, with the southern section from Liverpool Street to Hay Street being constructed first to provide a much needed link to the Liverpool Street cycleway. In combination, these cycleways provide a safe and direct cycleway connection north-south and east-west through the city along Castlereagh Street and Liverpool Street linking Kent Street in the north and Hay Street in the south. Detailed information on the Castlereagh Street cycleway from King Street to Liverpool Street will be available in 2015. This section of the Castlereagh Street cycleway will trial a design solution that provides cyclists dedicated use of the bike paths in peak periods while enabling loading vehicles kerbside access at non-peak times when cycleway volumes are low. Liverpool Street cycleway In response to feedback during consultation on the Liverpool Street cycleway, the NSW Government has amended the cycleway design west of George Street to retain loading capacity on the southern side of Liverpool Street near the George Street intersection. The existing two lane configuration for vehicles would also remain. The cycleway in Liverpool Street from Castlereagh Street to Sussex Street will proceed as planned.

Strategic bike network – routes to be determined

New cycleways

Why has the Castlereagh Street cycleway been split into a north and south section? In response to feedback from the community and businesses we are investigating a design in Castlereagh Street (between King and Liverpool Street) that would provide cyclists dedicated use of the bike paths in peak periods while undertaking a trial provision of kerbside access for loading vehicles during non-peak times, when cycleway volumes are low. The design of this part of the project is not yet finalised.

To avoid delaying other Sydney City Centre Access Strategy projects, approval for Castlereagh Street south and Liverpool Street cycleways was sought separately. These will provide vital north-south and east-west sections of the CBD bike network between Hay Street and Kent Street. They will form part of the Castlereagh Street cycleway, ultimately allowing the College Street cycleway to be removed, when the Hay Street to Park Street section of it is completed. This work will help support CBD Light Rail construction and servicing of the CBD during its transformation.

Park Street cyclewayThe Park Street cycleway from Castlereagh Street to Elizabeth Street is under assessment.

CBD Bike Network

CBD CYCLING FACTSA better connected network of cycleways in selected streets will improve safety for everyone in the CBD – cyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

More than 3300 people commute daily to the CBD by bicycle and this number is expected to grow when the network of cycleways is completed.

Every day in metropolitan Sydney, customers make more than 16 million trips that are less than 10km; including 392,000 bicycle trips – more than the number of ferry trips each day.

Cycling trips doubled between 2010 and 2012, from 25,000 to 50,000 trips a day and significant future growth is anticipated. Data: Sydney’s Cycling Future
