On 14 September 2015 an international team of scientists including the University of Birmingham detected gravitational waves for the fi rst time, using the twin LIGO instruments in Louisiana and Washington state in the US. The detection of these waves will help us to understand and explore the mysteries of our universe.

The University of Birmingham contributes £3.5 billion to the UK economy every year – enough to build seven fl agship hospitals or 140 new secondary schools. Almost one in 50 jobs in Birmingham depend on the University.

Researchers from the University of Birmingham are working with health partners in Brazil to combat the spread of Zika virus by deploying a pair of mobile DNA sequencing laboratories on a medical ‘road trip’ through the worst-hit areas of the country.

The ‘Birmingham-Illinois Partnership for Discovery, Engagement and Education’ (BRIDGE) has established over 55 successful links between the two Universities in key academic disciplines.

During the 2015 Rugby World Cup, the University served as the offi cial base for the South African Springboks rugby team, due to its superb sporting facilities and proven track record of hosting high-profi le training camps.

As part of a global collaboration with the University of Melbourne in research, education, and cultural engagement, we are offering up to 20 PhD scholarships, enabling research students to work with academics in Birmingham and Melbourne.
