SPOT LIGHT On Community News Healthcare, Community Learning & Slimming Award

Do you have an opinion on healthcare? You may not be aware that recent changes to the General Medical Services Contract from April 2011 require GP practices to promote the proactive engagement of patients through a Patient Participation Group.

At its simplest Patient Participation refers to patients taking an active interest in their health care and at present most Patient Participation groups (PPG) operate within their GP surgery and aim to make an important contribution to the well being of their communities. The aim of each PPG is to gather a group of local members from a broad a spectrum as possible to get a truly representative sample of opinion and points of view. PPG activities can include: health promotion, information provision, service delivery, fundraising and strategic input into the practice.

Blyth Road Medical Centre has recently started a PPG. We need young people, workers, retirees, people with long term conditions and people from ethnic groups. If you personally would like to make a dierence and have an opinion on healthcare and the services provided through your GP then why not become an active member of you PPG.

You could either be someone who attends our regular meetings (about once every 3 months) or alternatively be someone who would be happy for the PPG to contact you occasionally for your opinion on current topics

For further information about joining and participating please visit the surgery and pick up a leaet or call us on: 01709 798239

Slimming Expert Wins AwardHelping people achieve their dreams, especially when it comes to losing weight, is no mean achievement. Slimming World consultants are well known for being the most dedicated when it comes to real help and support through one of the most dicult things anyone ever has to do in their lives. So winning a special award for doing just that is pretty exceptional.Anita Smedley who holds a group at Maltby on Tuesday nights says “This job is so very special. Watching someone change from having no condence, being embarrassed about their size and wearing shapeless clothes to someone who looks and feels great, brings its own rewards on a daily basis. But to have your work recognised in this way is, I must admit, a very proud moment for me.”In the 10 weeks since Anita Smedley has been a consultant she has helped members lose more than 599 lbs, making Maltby one of the best weight losing areas in the country. So well done to Anita Smedley and well done to the slimmers of Maltby. If you want to join Anita’s award winning group her class is on Tuesday nights at the Full Life Church Centre, High Street, Maltby at either 5.30pm or 7.30pm. Flu JabsMost of us know that certain groups of people should visit the GP for a u jab: the elderly, diabetics, asthmatics etc.

What many people don’t realise is that even if you don’t fall into one of the ‘at risk’ categories a u jab is still a sensible precaution. You’ll have to pay, but it’s inexpensive (generally under £10) and many pharmacists administer the vaccine on their premises so you won’t have to book an appointment with your GP or take time o work.

Why might an otherwise healthy person request a u vaccine? Well, seasonal u is a substantial and unpleasant illness, far worse than the common cold, with which it’s sometimes confused. Flu generally requires a week or so o work to recover and can trigger other conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia.

The average person with u infects one or two other people through sneezing, coughing and

touch. If you work with the general public, in a shop for example, you are more at risk of being exposed to the virus so you might consider a u jab a worthwhile investment.

A business owner may consider the impact a week o sick would have on his business and opt to protect himself or herself for that reason.

Children are much more likely to pick up and pass on bugs as they are in such close proximity to each other all day. For this reason teachers and parents might think it wise to have a jab.

Flu jabs are generally safe unless you have an allergy to eggs or have had a previous allergic reaction to a shot. So discuss protecting yourself with your pharmacist today.

Supertooth Buddy Bluetooth Car KitFrom £39.99Hello and welcome to my column in Community Spotlight. In this column we will look at various Gadgets, Gizmos and downloadable applications that everyone I thought would start with an item that I believe should be compulsory. Using a mobile phone whist driving is very dangerous, not to mention illegal! If you must use a mobile whilst driving then a Bluetooth kit is essential A friend of mine, Nigel Short from Voot Telecom, gave me a Supertooth Buddy to try.

I have personally owned a number of these “clip on” visor kits and they have all been, well rubbish. When he rst gave it to me I thought, here we go again but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The Supertooth Buddy is brilliant but it is brilliant because of its simplicity.

It took me all of 30 second to pair my phone to the device. It is possible to actually pair 2 phones to the particular piece of kit. Once connected you are away. You can set you phone to automatically connect so you

will never get caught out. When I received my rst call, I was expecting the usual crackles and incoherent sounds to come from the speaker but no, it was clear as a whistle and the person I was speaking to could hear me clearly as well. At one point I even opened the window to test it and I did not have a complaint from the person on the other end of the line.

I said it was brilliant because of its simplicity. There is a grand total of 5 buttons. A red and a green button that work as per the ones on your phone, 2 volume buttons and an on/o button. The buttons are a decent size and easy to locate making the device easy to use.

The Supertooth Buddy also looks good. It is slim and compact so will not look obtrusive on the sun visor in your car. All these kits clip to the cars visor, however this one is magnetic. With the clip is placed on the visor, the Supertooth Buddy uses a magnet to hold it in place. This makes it easy to take in at night to charge up! It is lightweight, slim and very much portable between vehicles.

Available fromwww.vootaccessories.co.uk for just £39-99, this is the cost eective alternative to hands free phone calls in you car with out the expense of a professionally tted kit.

SPOT LIGHT On Lifestyle & Interests Rocket Man

Rocket ManFirework Safety and Etiquette

Hosting and planning a party can be stressful, what with checking there’s enough food and drink to go around and organising the entertainment. Fireworks are a brilliant way to entertain guests, but whilst they may look pretty in the night sky, they can also be extremely dangerous. Make sure that in between shopping for party-poppers and paper plates, you also have the right safety equipment needed for your display.

Gloves and eye protection are a must have, as well as a taper for setting o reworks at arm’s length - you don’t want to burn o your eyebrows by mistake! Make sure that everybody stands well back, and do not approach reworks that have

been lit - even if they haven’t gone o – as there’s a chance they still could.

Store your reworks in a metal box, away from ames, so that your party doesn’t go o with the wrong kind of bang, and always keep a bucket of water nearby to put out sparklers safely.

Last of all, don’t forget to tell your neighbours in advance that you’re having a party so that they aren’t inconvenienced by the noise, and if your party is not on November 5th itself do

not set reworks o after 11pm as it’s against the law and you could be ned! On November 5th you have until 12 midnight. Most importantly, make sure you have fun, enjoy yourself, and stay safe!

Success For A Year Old Business

My customers are usually people who are out at work all day, having problems with mobility or have an event or holiday at weekends.

I am fully insured and hold an up to date CRB. I walk dogs in the local area and also do dog sitting. I don't do group walks as i prefer to give the dogs all of my attention, and I always encourage socialising and being active with play.

My working hours are mon-fri 9am - 3pm and also weekends if needed. I started oct 2011 and have built up a great business. All my customers are really great and have recommended me to neighbours, friends and local organisations. I am really passionate about my job and enjoy every day. I am a huge dog lover and can understand their needs. I walk dogs who have been re-homed from rescue centres and owners have noticed a dierence from having a dog walker. I have a new girl working for me now and plan to keep taking on new dogs and becoming rotherham's best dog walking business!!

I Look forward to hearing from you, Lindsay.

Parkin - This is a super tasty Bonre Night treat.

Ingredients• 450g Minced Pork• 225g plain our• 2 level tsp ground ginger• 1 level tsp bicarbonate of soda• ½ level tsp salt• 225g medium oatmeal• 115g black treacle• 115g golden syrup• 115g soft light-brown sugar• 115g butter• 150ml milk• 1 egg - beaten

Serves 12Preparation time 20 minutesCooking time 25-30 minutes

MethodPreheat the oven to 180C / Gas mark 4. Grease and line a 30cm x 25cm x 5cm tin with non-stick baking paper. I have a 30cm round tin which, though not traditional, works just as well.Sift the our, ground ginger, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a bowl. Stir in the oatmeal and make a well in the centre.Put the treacle, golden syrup, butter and sugar into a saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Remove from the heat and stir in the milk and the beaten egg. Add to the dry ingredients and beat thoroughly. Pour into your chosen tin and bake in the centre of the oven for 25-30minutes until rm, and a skewer inserted into the Parkin comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin. When cold wrap in greaseproof paper and store in a airtight tin. This really does improve in avour after a few days maturing so make it in advance and hide it!Cut into squares or slices for serving.

Be Kind To Your Boiler

Boilers, like cars, can run for years without being serviced, but if they aren’t checked regularly it could be costly in the long run. Boilers are subject to gradual wear and tear and if minor problems are left unchecked they could lead to major damage, hefty repair bills and even boiler replacement.

An annual service takes about an hour and should be carried out by a fully qualied Gas Safe engineer, who will calibrate the boiler and check for leaks and soot build ups. The result will be a boiler that is operating eciently and safely – and saving you money because it is using less energy!

Along with the nancial benets, annual boiler servicing is essential to the terms of some warranties and is a legal requirement if you are a landlord. It could also be a matter of life and death should a leak be discovered. Carbon monoxide poisoning can lead to serious illness and even death if it is not detected. Known as the silent killer, there are no obvious signs, so a safety test could literally

be a life saver.

Getting your boiler serviced may seem like a waste of money – especially if you’ve had it done in the past and all was well – but is it really worth taking that risk?

Garden ViewSeasonal treats

The nights may be getting longer, but produce in the garden is still in abundance. Due to the later start of the season most plants, especially vegetables, got o to a really slow start, but when it did nally warm up in late July it meant the crops came in bumper sized!

The month of October is a colourful one in the garden and the onset of autumn marks the start of the celebrations and traditions which unite friends and family and where we can share good times within our community. Take the humble pumpkin for example. Prize winning or not, it’s a fruit which when picked at the beginning of the month and left to ripen in the greenhouse, is perfect for eating, just in time for Halloween.

The act of carving out the pumpkin is a family event in our house and not a bit goes to waste. The outer skin is used to create a scary face, topped with a pumpkin hat, the esh from the centre makes amazing soup (if seasoned well) and the seeds can be toasted and sprinkled in the soup or even better onto a loaf of home made bread. A family activity and meal in one … what other fruit oers so much for so little time and eort?

Autumn is the time to tidy up the garden, but don’t think of it as outdoor housework. Putting the garden to bed

should be an enjoyable task, a time spent alone outside in the brisk fresh air, where you can generate your own warmth through hard work, culminating in a great sense of satisfaction. It’s also an opportunity to be creative and plant out winter/spring bedding schemes. If traditional bedding is not your cup of tea, and you prefer something a little more ‘Earl Grey’, why not try this. Take a couple of evergreen grasses, a few attractive twigs (from the red Cornus or twisted Hazel) and some dried Allium stalks (with heads) and have a go with a little outdoor ower arranging. Then introduce some autumn owering plants, such as a lovely rust coloured Chrysanthemum, shocking pink Cyclamen or a more subtle dwarf Aster and you’ll have an impressive display to welcome your guests when they come to share in your seasonal treats.

Jobs to do this month• Divide herbaceous perennials and rhubarb crowns by lifting out with a fork and chopping into pieces with a spade. Replant with plenty of well rotted compost or manure• Plant out spring cabbages and harvest apples, pears and nuts• Clear up fallen autumn leaves regularly• Ensure plant pots have good drainage, and consider standing pots on feet• Pot up tender plants such as Fuchsias and Pelargoniums and place these in the glasshouse for overwinter protection

SPOT LIGHT On Lifestyle & Interests The Big Draw

The Big Draw

The Big Draw. Have you heard of it? I hadn’t until I started doing the research for this article. All kinds of possibilities passed through my mind. Is it a lottery? Some kind of cowboy duel? Maybe a stalemate in some sporting activity? Or what about a huge pull-out storage compartment (although we all know this would be spelt ‘drawer’)?

No it’s not any of those things! The Big Draw is the world’s biggest celebration of drawing, organised by the charity Campaign for Drawing. Its aim is to raise the prole of drawing as a tool for thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement, and it plans to continue its work until the words ‘I can’t draw’ are dropped from our vocabulary!

The Big Draw is a month-long festival running throughout October in all parts of the UK and twenty other countries internationally. Over a thousand organisations are involved, running events that create opportunities for families, children and adults to draw with a large variety of media about a wide selection of subjects.

Big Draw organisers include educators at national, regional and local museums, galleries, heritage sites, libraries, parks, schools, universities, shopping and community centres, art clubs and village halls, who together run around 1,300 drawing events to engage their communities in creative activities.

By encouraging wide-scale public participation, The Big Draw aims to show that drawing can be a positive collaborative activity as well as a private passion. The Big Draw also encourages engagement with museum and gallery collections and increases

civic participation by uniting people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures.

The Campaign for Drawing sees drawing as a basic human skill that is useful in all walks of life and that helps people see, think, invent and take action. This year the theme for the Big Draw is ‘Lines’, and participants are encouraged to do as Swiss artist Paul Klee once suggested, by ‘taking a line for a walk’.

The festival kicks-o with a free national launch at the Victoria and Albert Museum on 30 September. Big Draw, Big Make will bring together leading teams and individuals from some of the UK's top design practices to show the importance of drawing across the creative industries.

If you are interested in taking part in the Big Draw and would like to know more about the events planned in your area, go to www.campaignfordrawing.org. So many hobbies and pastimes these days are either dicult to pursue or aord, but drawing is neither. Both accessible and economical, it requires nothing more than a pencil and paper. If that isn’t reason enough to give it a try, I don’t know what is!

The award, which celebrates Leaders who have provided exceptional support to their members during their weight loss journey; is only given out once every two years to a select group of Leaders across the country.

This year alone, Lisa has helped her members shed approximately 3200lbs and has led an amazing 250 members to successfully shed 5% or more of their weight.

Wickersley Library meeting member Lisa deardon says the accolade is very well-deserved: ‘Lisa is wonderful! She is an inspiration to many of us and gives us great tips, tricks and support to help us achieve our weight loss goals. I have lost over 2 stone with Lisa and I’ve never felt better!”

Weight Watchers UK Operations Director Samantha Rhodes, who made the award to Lisa & said: “At the heart of Weight Watchers success are inspiring Leaders like Lisa Brock, lisa has been with Weight Watchers for 9 years,– rstly as a member who successfully lost 5 stone and then as a Leader, running the Wickersley Library Meeting

on a Saturday Morning. We are delighted to have her as part of the team and immensely proud of the dierence she has made in the community

“I’m so proud of my members and how well they’ve done; and to get this award for doing something I love is amazing!”

Lisas meeting is held at Wickersley Library at 10am on a Saturday Morning
