Welcome to the July issue of Community Spotlight on S66. This is our most popular issue to date and I’ve been sent that much content that I’ve struggled to include everything. Please keep checking our website, where in addition to back issues we will soon have additional content not featured in the magazine and a calendar of events.

Spotlight is celebrating it’s 1st anniversary this month, and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to announce our expansion into Maltby. We will be delivering another 2,000 magazines this month into some areas of Maltby. Over the next few months this will continue to expand until by September we will cover all of Maltby, and start to look at expanding again to cover the whole of S66. Our aim is to provide excellent community information, events, news, views and spotlight on businesses to all of the properties within the S66 postcode.

In this issue we have more news and events from your community, an article on page 6 about the history of the Olympic Torch and a competition to win Anti-Virus software worth £49.99, courtesy of PC-Part X (see page 14), plus much more!.

The image on the front cover was captured on Monday 4th June at the Manor Field, Maltby where The Tiger Parachute Team helped Maltby celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. Seeing the TV images of peoples excitement and sense of national pride at the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations I believe we are in for a Great British Summer! We also have the Olympics to look forward to, and I’m sure that the community celebrations will continue.

If you have a story, event or general community news that you want to be ‘spotlighted’, please let me know.

If you would like to advertise in future issues of Spotlight please contact us or see page 10.

I hope you enjoy this issue. Please continue to send us your feedback and input for future issues of Spotlight.

Torch LightThe history of the Olympic torchThe Olympic Games are almost upon us. The Olympic torch arrived in Britain on May 18th and is now travelling all around the country. The route is planned to take in 1000 towns and villages along the way, and is designed so that 95% of the population will be within 10 miles travelling distance of at least one stopping point. But what is the story behind the Olympic ame?During the ancient Games in Olympia, Greece, a ame ignited by the sun burned continually on the altar of the goddess Hera. The modern ame rst made an appearance in the 1928 Olympics, held in Amsterdam, Holland, where it burned throughout the period of the Games. The tradition of the relay began in 1936 in Berlin and persists until this day. The torch is lit a few months before the start of the games, in Olympia, at the Temple of Hera. An actress, dressed in ceremonial robes uses a parabolic mirror to focus the rays of light from the sun, igniting a ame. This ame is then carried in a re pot to the ancient Olympic stadium. It is taken to an altar and used to light the rst runner’s torch. The design of the torch changes for each Olympics. The London torch is triangular in shape - the three sides represent the three times Britain has hosted the Olympics: 1908, 1948 and 2012. It is decorated with 8000 tiny cut-out circles, one for each of the runners who will carry the torch, and is

constructed of a lightweight-but-strong metal alloy. The route the ame then takes varies according to which city is hosting the Olympics. In the past it has been to the top of Mount Everest (Beijing 2008), and even into space (1996 and 2000)! It is carried on foot wherever possible, but also has to travel by other modes of transport, including boat and plane. On planes the re has to be housed in a special lamp as open ames would not be allowed. As the torch is carried by relay, each runner carries it for only one part of its total journey. They then light the torch of the next runner. On average 110 runners will take part each day, and each runner will run approximately 300m. Until the 1950s only men could carry the torch, and it took until 1968 in Mexico City before a woman was allowed to be the nal runner. The rst woman to do this was called Enriqueta Basileo. Carrying the torch is considered a great honour. Perhaps surprisingly, most of the runners are not athletes. They are chosen for many reasons, often because they have overcome personal diculties, or because they are charity workers. The nal runner is generally kept a secret until as close to the time of the Games as possible. Previous Olympians mooted as a possible nal runner for 2012 include Steve Redgrave, Steve Ovett and Daley Thompson.

SPOT LIGHT On Bramley Parish Council & A Charity Concert

Don’t Forget To Mention SPOT LIGHT When You Call

Bramley Parish CouncilBramley Parish Council  is continuing to improve our village.  We have vacancies for councillors, so if you are interested in working in the community contact Malcolm Brown on 07966954244

Bramley ShowBramley Show takes place on September 1st on Flash Lane playing elds.  Preparations are well under way with acts and stalls booked. As well as the usual funfair there will be an all day car boot, anyone interested in booking a spot or a stall contact Cllr. Dennis Hardwick on 0774 914436. ,  more details  in next month’s Spotlight.

Children’s PlaygroundA new basket swing has been erect in the playground we hope this is an attraction to the visitors to the playground. Regular visitors will have noticed the lack of emptying of the litter bins, this is due to Rotherham Council budget cuts. We apologise to visitors and ask you to be patient while the parish council can put in place sta to empty the bins and clear the litter. At the moment the Parish Councillors are doing this job as and when they are available.

Jubilee PartyThai was a very successful event held on Monday  4th June at the Bill Chaer VC  centre. There were children’s rides , games, live music and plenty of party food.  Thanks to Cllr Sarah Count and her army of helpers. Also to Cllrs Hardwick and Jackson for driving this along.

Bramley CemeteryThere has been a lot of response to locking of the cemetery gates, most residents are in favour of this.  The reasons for locking the gates is the vandalism that has taken place in the cemetery as well as the problem of household waste being dumped in the cemetery.  There is ample access for people to walk into the cemetery as well as wheelchair access from Slacks Lane. Flower BedsThe Parish gardeners are busy putting in the bedding plants

around the village.  I am sure we are going to have a display to rival last years.  Many thanks to John and Sean for all the work they put in to make the village look colourful during the summer months.

Parish WebsiteThere are many pictures on the website of Bramley in the past, photographs kindly donated to the parish by Mrs Mary Robson who is well known in Bramley and now lives in Somerset.  We would like to thank Mrs Robson for her continued support in this project..  If you haven't already looked at the website take a look on  www.bramleypc.net

Youth ClubWe are continuing in our eorts to secure the lease on the Bill Chaer VC building.  The youth club is continuing to run in a partnership with  Bramley Parish Council and RMBC.  On 7th June a party was held to celebrate a year of the youth club partnership. Thanks to Tim Needham and all the volunteers for their enthusiasm in keeping this facility for the young people of Bramley.

Coee MorningThe parish council are holding coee mornings for senior citizens in the village.  These are to be held at Bill Chaer VC Centre on rst Thursday of each month from 10am to 12 pm.  The next one will be on Thursday 5th July.  Come along have a coee or tea and a natter.

Skate ParkThis project  is ongoing and we have applied for funding for the rst stage of the build.  Hopefully we will know by the end of July if this bid has been successful.  A group of young people are continuing to work on the project in conjunction with the Parish Council,  Groundworks Dearne Valley and Rotherham MBC

Parish Councillors SurgeryThese are held on last Saturday of each month in the Parish Hall, Cross Street fro 11am to 12 pm.  The next surgery will be on Saturday 30th June.

CHARITY CONCERT BY ‘THE ANCIENT BRETTONS’IN AID OF THE NATIONAL AUTISTIC SOCIETY (Rotherham Branch) AND THE ‘FULL LIFE CHURCH’ MALTBY, 26.05.12

Over one hundred people gathered in Full Life Church to watch the ‘Ancient Brettons’ in concert. From the onset, the group had the audience clapping their hands and tapping their feet as they sang a number of Irish Folk Songs and Sea Shanties. Solo’s by Arnold Lettall of ‘The Streets of London’ and ‘Any Dream will do’ were well received while David Morton’s rendition on the ute of ‘Annie’s Song’ received loud applause.

Following the Interval Cllr Keith Stringer introduced a number of people who have gone that ‘extra mile’ over the last four in helping with his fundraising events. In particular he introduced the TESCO COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS. Cllr Stringer

praised these ladies for their kindness in supplying rae prizes and allowing his to collect donations in the store over the last four years and for the help and advice that they have given to many groups and organisations in and around Maltby. The second half followed in the same vain whilst Ian Wainwright had the audience laughing at his rendition of ‘Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls’ Stuart Young gave support with some excellent bass and guitar playing The whole concert was light hearted, well performed and very enjoyable and it was good to see the audience enjoying the

entertainment.

The event raised £700 which was shared between the National Autistic Society (Rotherham Branch) and the Full Life Church who donated their share to Watoto Children’s Home in Uganda. The cheque was presented to NAS 15th June, infront of Full Life Church, Maltby.

SPOT LIGHT On Garden View, Letters of Thanks & CompetitionGarden ViewWhat's hot ... And what's not!

We often talk about trends in gardening, but unlike in clothing fashion, they tend to move more slowly. In fact, I reckon it takes around 10 years for a signicant change to happen, and many of these stem (pardon the pun) from just a few sources.

New trends begin with wild ideas from our top designers at ower shows like Chelsea

and Hampton Court. These are then picked up by television and other media and slowly trickle down the chain into DIY stores and garden centres, where you and I can use them in our own gardens.

By the time this process has happened, it's normally a couple of years down the line. Take the 'Barley Wood blue' phenomenon for example. This paint colour was used extensively in the 90's by a popular TV makeover show, and then once available in DIY stores, it was sloshed onto the fences of every 'trendy' garden.

Thankfully things are now a little more subtle, with muted tones being the favoured choice (in the main), although I think it is fun to indulge in a few bright colours now and then (like my 'loganberry' rendered garden walls at home!).

If you want to be bang on trend this year, then it's great news, as not too much eort is required. With the opening of the new parkland and gardens surrounding the Olympic

stadium setting the trend, you can't go wrong in 2012 with a few weeds!

No, I'm not kidding, but to be more accurate and fair to the fabulous landscape architects who designed it, weeds are actually just plants growing in the wrong place, so in this instance they are wild owers (how much nicer do they sound now!)

Native insects love the natural open blooms which wild owers provide, and they have a very calming element to them for humans too. So if you're up for a change next summer, and want to be bang on trend, then ditch the grass, rotate the soil and sow yourself a wild ower meadow.Until next time, Lee

Jobs to do this month• Tulips can now be lifted and stored in a cool dry place. Re plant in November.• Bedding plants can now be planted up in hanging baskets, tubs and containers.• Tender perennials such as Dahlias and Salvias can also be planted out as all risk of frost should have now gone. • Sow fast maturing crops such as radish, lettuce and spinach at weekly intervals to ensure a succession of crops.• Ensure the greenhouse doors are left open during the day to give maximum ventilation, and on really hot days you’ll need to water morning and night.

Letters of ThanksHi Matthew,

May I take this opportunity to thank you for your excellent feature in your 'Community Spotlight' magazine re: the National Autistic Society. It is well written and informative and a good read. Again Many thanks Matthew.

Chocolate Sorbet - Light, refreshing and gluten-free!

Ingredients

• 100g / 3 ½ oz good quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) broken into pieces

• 100ml / 3 ½ oz ltered or mineral water

• 60g / 2 ½ oz cocoa powder

For the sugar syrup

• 250ml / 9 oz ltered or mineral water

• 150g / 5oz caster sugar

Prep time: 15 minsFreezing time: 3-4 hours plus chilling timeServes 4-6

MethodPrepare the sugar syrup by placing the sugar and water into a saucepan. Bring to the boil without stirring and leave to simmer until the sugar crystals have dissolved (about 5 minutes). Remove from the heat. Melt the dark chocolate in a heat-proof bowl suspended over a saucepan of just-simmering water. When it has melted add the 100ml / 3 ½ oz water and reheat until warm. Whisk in the cocoa, then add the melted chocolate, whisking together until smooth. Let the mixture cool, then chill it by placing the bowl of sorbet mixture over a bowl of water lled with ice cubes. Stir occasionally but don’t let any water splash into the sorbet mix.For the smoothest results churn the chilled mixture in an ice cream maker until ready. If you don’t have an ice cream maker then place the mixture in a shallow bowl and freeze it in the coldest part of the freezer. Take it out every hour and whisk it to break up the ice crystals. Made this way it will have a slightly more granular texture but it will still be delicious. Remove from the freezer about twenty minutes before serving.

Serving suggestionsAlthough this is lovely on its own you could try serving it with:Strawberries dipped in melted chocolate, then chilled.Rich butter shortbread (obviously not if you’re on a gluten-free diet!).With a glass of coee, chocolate or mint liqueur poured over.

Bryant and May and the Memory of Blood -Christopher Fowler

It seems that Bryant and May refuse to be pushed into what some would call overdue retirement. Despite the best eorts of various government departments during their previous outings, the start of this latest novel

in Christopher Fowler’s popular series nds the Peculiar Crimes Unit still very much operational. And so it should be. Where else could you nd a talking fortune telling automaton, a copy of Common Folk Remedies and an ancient Tibetan skull all in the same building? The Memory of Blood is the ninth novel starring the two unlikely heroes, ably supported as ever by a vividly drawn cast of characters. This time they are battling to discover who or what is behind a series of deaths linked to a London theatre - the rst murder apparently committed inside a locked room by a puppet... Thanks to the circular structure, we know where Bryant and May will end up – hosting a grim version of a cocktail party for the main suspects. However, there are many twists and turns along the way, and a signicant subplot involving the sinister Oskar Kasavian and his repeated attempts to destroy the PCU also weaves across the main storyline. As ever, Fowler educates and entertains seamlessly. The book is packed with detail, from a thorough exploration of the story of Mr Punch through theatrical history and the making of waxwork models. And, of course, London is at the heart of it all, very much the third main character. Fowler’s love for, and encyclopaedic knowledge of the capital city is evident on almost every page. Some would argue that Bryant and

May are an acquired taste. I would argue that they are a taste worth acquiring. This is as good a place to start as any.

Have You Seen Who’s Just Moved In Next Door to Us? – Colin McNaughton

If you are still at the wonderful stage of reading aloud to your children, then this book is a gift. On the surface, it is simple enough – the house next door has been sold to a clearly undesirable family, and the narrators are horried. Not only that, but the rest of the street is in uproar – it’sshocking! Gradually, on each page, we are introduced to the normal residents – ‘a lovely bunch of people’ who include Mr Thing, the Humpty Dumpty family, Michelangelo and Frankenstein. Even the park is distinctly odd, boasting piranhas, a hammerhead shark and Tarzan. So who – or what – could have brought them to such a state of disbelief? I won’t give away the answer, of course – but even when you know, you will return to the story again and again, if only for the pleasure of McNaughton’s illustrations. We see inside each character’s home and running jokes carry from page to page packed with verbal and visual puns. Younger readers may note that the postman arriving with a parcel for the three little pigs is a thinly disguised wolf, but may not realise why you are chuckling the narrator’s ‘hunch’ that the face of the man in the belfry ‘rings a bell’. Multi-layered, clever and laugh out loud funny – what more can you ask for in a bedtime story?

Some said “impossible”, others said “you’re mad”, but we wanted a challenge, a test of strength, courage

and determinedness - 3 Galas, 3 dierent locations, 3 consecutive days. Weeks of planning, an early night and a hearty breakfast, we woke with the birds and arrived in mass at Wickersley Doorstep Green in preparation for their Jubilee Celebrations.People couldn’t wait for the 12.00 noon opening of the event, probably because our coconut shy was too tempting, families, groups of friends, even outings of our older generation came ooding in to compete against each other trying to dislodge a coconut and win a fantastic prize. When the show closed, it was pedal to the metal, as we dismantled our portable homes, packed them neatly in the bus, drove them to the Three Horseshoes Public House (the home of B&W Lions ), only to start reassembling them in readiness for Sunday, which was very thirsty work........We were ready, all we needed were families to test their skills on the hoopla, to win the crown making competition, and to feast upon the boxes of buns made by our member from the House of Cakes at Bramley who had slaved away all night. So to Monday the third and nal day, o we went in the bus we packed the night before to Bramley Jubilee Gala on Flash Lane to be met with sunshine, what a transformation in the weather. Our marquees up in record time, we were

true experts by now, tables set, coconut shy at the ready, plants for sale; people came ooding in from all directions to enjoy the celebrations, what a dierence a day makes. So to a close, a quick pack up and o to unload the bus and put all the equipment away, a fantastic 3 days, Lions working together, having FUN whilst raising money to put back into our community to needy causes. A BIG thank you to everyone who helped us and remember you too can make a BIG dierence. WE meet at the Three Horseshoes on the rst and third Wednesday of each month at 8.00pm, so come along and see for yourself the hard and dedicated work we do.

SPOT LIGHT On The Next Big Thing? & Love Where You Live?

Don’t Forget To Mention SPOT LIGHT When You Call

The Next Big Thing? By Aaron James

Popping up on lots of products, advertisements, leaets, business cards etc. etc. are curious, square shaped, barcode like images. Many of us have seen them without really knowing what they are or what they do. Quite simply they are called quick reaction codesand although in their infancy in the UK they look set to become the next big thing. Already in widespread use in Japan and growing quickly in the United States their potential is huge.

They are used to transfer digital information directly to a user’s smart phone. They are far superior to a standard barcode in that they are able to store substantially more data. For example they may contain URL links, geographical co-ordinates, text, images and much more. All a user needs to do is download the free QR code reader to their phone, scan the image and hey presto! They are directed instantly to the required information.

Let’s take an example of how this could work. You see an advertisement for a car in a newspaper containing a QR code. You scan the code and your phone takes you directly to the seller’s picture les of the vehicle so you can get a better look. Or maybe you have just nished a wonderful meal at a restaurant. You denitely want to come back here so you scan the QR code on the menu and immediately the contact details are installed into your phone. As a consumer then the system is great because you have instant access to the information you want when you want it.

Anything that is of benet to the consumer is of course an opportunity for businesses to market their products or services.

With a little bit of creative thinking the QR code can be a fantastic tool for converting interest into sales. The more relevant information that can be given to a prospective customer, at a time when they want that information, increases the probability of a sale. Very few small shops can be open 24 hours a day but a shop that perhaps displays QR codes in its window really can. A customer walks passed the store and spots an item in the window they want. Normally that person would walk on disappointed because the shop is closed. Now though with a quick scan of the QR code they are directed immediately to the online shop where they can order and pay. A potential lost sale is converted to an online customer. Alternatively, if you want to get your business phone ringing, QR codes can be created to automatically dial a predetermined number or even send text messages. The marketing opportunities are endless.

The additional benet of the QR code is that its use is completely free both to the seller and the buyer. Just as the QR reader app can be downloaded to the smart phone for free, the creation of the codes is just as simple and carries no cost. Of course there are marketing companies out there, who will create eective strategies using the codes and charge for their services, but it remains freely available to anyone who wants to use the service.

Something for nothing? Surely…The Next Big Thing!

Why not try out our QR code, which will take you to the Community Spotlight website. You could also ask us about printing you code on your leaets or business cards.

Love where you live?By Aaron James

Littering has long been a persistent problem in every town and village in the country. The streets are all too often scattered with irresponsibly discarded cans and bottles, sweet wrappers, crisp packets as well as old newspapers and packaging from food takeaways etc. This not only causes an unsightly mess but also potentially damages the environment too. However, a new initiative has recently been launched in Bramley to combat the problem locally. The “Love where you live” campaign is the result of dialogue between retired councillor Malcolm Brown, local residents and McDonalds restaurant.

Tim Smith, the assistant manager, at the Bramley branch of McDonalds told Spotlight, “As we are the leading brand in this area, and our packaging is heavily branded, it is something we are very conscious about as a store and company. We do trash walksaround the store at least ve times a day and send our maintenance man out to do a community trash walk where he visits right up to the local housing estates picking up rubbish of all kinds. Despite us committing to this it’s still an issue and

it’s frustrating.”

Describing the aims of the campaign he continued, “As a starting point we send out at least eight volunteer sta members to a dierent area of Bramley once a month. The area, chosen by the local residents and councillors, will be where there is a particular problem.” The rst event was held on 14th June and was focused on the local youth club as this location had been identied as a specic nuisance. Many bags of rubbish were collected and the day was considered a great success by all who took part. The removal of so much rubbish can only have a benecial eect on the local environment. Other businesses and local people are very much encouraged to join in the campaign. Help can be given by joining the next litter pick day, which will be anounced in the next issue or even by simply discussing the campaign with as many people as possible to raise awareness of the issues. The aim of the campaign is not only to clean up but also to change people’s mindset about how they dispose of their rubbish and the subsequent impact it has on the local environment and community. The greater the number of people that take part substantially increases the likely success of the campaign. If you “Love where you live” and would like to get involved please keep checking the pages of Spotlight and we will keep you informed.
