What this workshop is all about:
● Introduce to you a curriculum developed for Intermediate and Senior Personal Development Skills, along with Senior Literacy
● Our program has flourished over 1 year. We want to share it with you.
● We aren’t a perfect program yet...but we are working toward it!
Learning Focus
By the end of this workshop, you should: ● Be starting to think about meaningful ways you can connect your class
or VCAL program with community organisations
● Have some ideas as to how to integrate certain units and projects with different strands of VCAL
● Be familiar with the Intermediate/Senior PDS outcomes

● Uniform shop was drab and ugly
● WRS/art teacher led senior students through the process of designing a mural
● Students were divided into groups and given responsibility for one wall

The VCAL students wanted to paint a rainbow to symbolize our school’s acceptance and celebration of people of all genders and sexual identities.

Students eventually ‘signed off' by writing their names and their graduation year on the uniform shop, so future students can put a name to their contribution

IN PREPARATION FOR ORGANISING FUTURE EVENTS, THE SENIOR VCAL CLASS PLAN THE DAY FOR THE WHOLE OF VCAL
IT IS ABOUT CREATING CONNECTIONS AMONG THE COHORT, AS WELL AS CELEBRATING THE DIFFERENT PATHWAY THEY HAVE CHOSEN

PDS LEARNING OUTCOMES: ALL
LITERACY: ORACY FOR KNOWLEDGE, WRITING FOR KNOWLEDGE
STUDENTS FORM SMALL GROUPS AND DECIDE ON A SKILL TO TEACH TO THE YEAR 7 COHORT
THEY ARE IN CHARGE OF THE SESSION AND HAVE TO RUN IT TWICE IN ONE AFTERNOON
THEY HAVE TO PLAN THE WORKSHOP , ORGANISE RESOURCES NEEDED TO RUN IT AS WELL AS CONDUCT AN EVALUATION AFTERWARDS
THEY THEN HAVE TO COMPLETE A PRESENTATION ON THEIR WORKSHOP TO PRESENT TO THE CLASS IN THE FORM OF A POWERPOINT INCLUDING PHOTOS, SURVEYS AND THEIR OWN REFLECTIONS

They then run an awareness and fundraising campaign at school

WE DECIDED TO CHOOSE AN ISSUE THAT WAS A CONCERN WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY
STUDENTS STUDIED A RANGE OF VIDEOS AND STATISTICS RELATED TO THIS ISSUE AND WERE ASKED TO MAKE SOME OBSERVATIONS FROM THESE
THEY ORGANISED FOR A SPEAKER TO COME TO THE SCHOOL AND ADDRESS THE YEAR 10 COHORT, AS A WAY OF RAISING AWARENESS
JESSE, FROM REKIAH’S LAW CAME AND SPOKE AND IT WAS EXTREMELY

● IN ADDITION TO THIS STUDENTS ALSO ORGANISED A FUNDRAISER TO RAISE MONEY TO DONATE TO JESSE FROM REKIAH’S LAW
● THIS PROJECT IS GOING TO BE EXTENDED THIS YEAR AS WE ARE GOING TO LINK IT TO HOMELESSNESS - BECAUSE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS A MAJOR CAUSE OF HOMELESSNESS IN VICTORIA
● VCAL STUDENTS ARE GOING TO ORGANISE A WINTER SLEEP OUT AT SCHOOL, WITH PROCEEDS GOING TO URBAN SEED
STEP OUT WITH CASUAL SHOES AND HELP RAISE AWARENESS AND PUT A STOP TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
AND VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. WHEN: FRIDAY 18TH OCTOBER
WHAT TO DO: WEAR ANY SHOES YOU LIKE AND BRING A GOLD COIN DONATION TO HELP STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
BY RAISING FUNDS FOR REKIAH’S LAW.

● In the past: funded by grant from council
● Poorly run, disorganised, no ownership
● Now: student/school-funded
● Accredited barista course via Coffee School
● Open every Tuesday at recess and lunch
● Runs as a competition between students - whover makes the most money gets a Nandos feast at the end of the semester.
● Student groups choose 1 specialty item to sell (donuts, icy poles, etc.)
