Once a month, Tom Fink, Steve Orejudos, Rodney Arnayro and Nidya Rivera-Moreno, volunteer to read to children ages five to ten at Golden Hill’s Family Reading Fridays, where, for work related reasons, many parents and relatives are unable to attend. “I only wish I had more time to read,” said Tom Fink. “Not only is it important to be a positive role model, but even more important to teach the kids at an early age that education is the key to success.” Golden Hill recently became a K-8 school, giving the volunteers a wide range of reading levels to interact with. Tom volunteers at a fifth grade class where reading is essential for passing proficiency exams. Steve and Rodney volunteer in a fourth and third grade class, where reading isn’t just part of the curriculum, but “about having lots of fun,” said Rodney. Nidya reads to a bilingual kindergarten class and tutors the children to read in both languages. “They are a blast and always have funny stories to tell me,” she says. “I can’t believe I was that tiny once. It truly is fascinating to see how much they absorb when one takes the time to teach them.” Top: Steve Orejudos, Tom Fink, Blue, Nidya Rivera-Moreno, Rodney Arnayro.
