IntroductionDear Parents/Carers,

As I approach the end of my time here at saltash.net, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all that you do to help make our school what it is. Without your ongoing support and involvement in your child or children’s education we could not achieve half the things that we do. It has been a real privilege and pleasure over the years to get to know many of you on a personal level, especially those of you who have had a number of children going through the school.

I would like to say a special thank you to those of you who find the time to write to us or call us to let us know when things have gone well as well as on the occasions when you have concerns or need an issue to be addressed. Everybody here at saltash.net is committed to doing all that they possibly can to ensure our young people have the best possible learning journey throughout their time at the school so it is always lovely to be able to share with colleagues positive feedback.

Over the past few weeks, we have certainly been receiving some outstanding feedback, not just from you as parents and carers, but also from many members of our local community who have all been blown away by the talent which has been on display in our whole school production of ‘Billy Elliot’. From start to finish, this show has been above and beyond anything we have attempted before and the outcomes have been stunning.

There is an advert on television currently whose strapline states: ‘The moment only exists because of all that came before it’. I think this is absolutely true of this year’s performances of ‘Billy Elliot’. The legacy that Mrs Loyn and Mrs Haighton started eight years ago with our production of ‘Grease’ has enabled us to take on an incredibly ambitious project this year and be successful.

The momentum has built year after year with ‘Oliver’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’. ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘Annie’ all following on from ‘Grease’. Our grateful thanks go to our current performing arts department – Mr Oakes, Mr Bond, Ms Smart and Mr Procter for enabling the vision of ‘Billy Elliot’ to become a reality, and to all of the other staff and amazing students who so generously gave up hours and hours of their time over the last eight months.

One of the main themes of ‘Billy Elliot’ is that of ‘Believing and Achieving’ – the same motto which underpins all that we strive for here at saltash.net. Someone asked me recently what I would like to be remembered for as I leave the school after fourteen years as Head Teacher. It’s a really hard

question when so much has happened during the time I’ve been here but I guess it does all come down to the idea of ‘legacy’ and this central belief that anything is possible if we really believe it can happen; as one of our Heads of Year is very fond of saying ‘If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.’ I hope that the legacy I have left is that we have a thriving, happy, creative and innovative school which is ready to move on in the next stage of its journey with Ms Littledyke at the helm. I know she will be a fantastic Head Teacher and I wish her all the very best with the next generation of students at Saltash.

I definitely could not have done what I’ve done as Head Teacher over the past fourteen years without the support, too, of my excellent teaching and support staff colleagues, our hard working governors and Trust Board, the Friends of School, local community groups and organisations, our partnership with Landulph Primary in SMART, our other partner primaries in Saltash, our partner secondary schools across South East Cornwall, and, of course, my long suffering and ever supportive family! To all of them I owe a massive thanks.

I will, of course, miss all of my colleagues here at saltash.net, but words cannot express how much I will miss the daily interaction with our truly wonderful young people. The saltash.net students are just the best. Over the years they have made me laugh and they’ve made me cry; they’ve taught me so much and they’ve inspired me constantly. I have the greatest respect for all of them, present and past, and I wish them all happy and successful futures.

Thank you again for all your support. I wish you a very Happy Christmas and all the best for 2017.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs I BryceHeadteacher

Billy Elliot wows at saltash.netsaltash.net’s performance of ‘Billy Elliot’ produced four fantastic evenings of entertainment, with tremendous performances from all cast members.

Set against the backdrop of the 1984/85 Miners’ Strike in North Eastern England, the play tells the story of young Billy, who pursues his dream of becoming a ballet dancer, despite the obstacles he faces.

Assuming the role of Billy was Year 7’s Spencer Dunne, who performed with skill and talent beyond his years. Performing central roles were Bradley Sweet, who played Billy’s best friend Michael, and Richard Tolman, playing Billy’s Dad. Performing other key roles were Tommy Williams, as Billy’s brother Tony, Emily Lambert as Billy’s supportive dance teacher Mrs Wilkinson, Chloe Lynch as Grandma, and Sophie Watson as Debbie.

Also deserving of mention are the two understudies, who shadowed the parts of Billy and Michael - Jack Mills and George Edge, as well as Megan Kelly who performed as Mother and Drew Brett who took on the role of George.

The full cast together numbered 65 students, with 10 students helping to work behind the scenes to ensure the production was a success. One of the huge challenges facing the Performing Arts department was the iconic dream ballet scene, which required a huge degree of work and was performed fantastically.

Refreshments at the performances were provided in the canteen by the Friends of Saltash and World Challenge team.

With the performing rights for ‘Billy Elliot’ only released in January 2016, saltash.net’s Performing Arts department lost little time securing a license, becoming one of the first schools to gain performing rights.

saltash.net’s links with ‘Billy Elliot’ go back many years, as ex-student, Josh Fedrick, performed the lead role of Billy in the West End production during 2008-9.

Head of Performing Arts, Matt Oakes, expressed his delight at the success of the performance.

He said: “It’s been a long project but worth every minute. It’s taken about 8 months to get the show ready due to the high level of technical demand in choreography and allowing our young talented actors to absorb themselves in the show. The whole company have been fantastic to work with and we’ve had a lot of fun.

“We were overwhelmed with the number of people who came to watch the shows with record numbers each night, in fact, we had to have a standby queue each night to try and fit them all in. Thank you to everyone who has supported the production, including members of our community, we honestly couldn’t have done it without your support.”

Love in a Box 2016

Generous students and staff at saltash.net have donated an incredible 127 boxes for this year’s Love in a Box.

The boxes were collected by Head Students Bronwen Hall, Rosie Thompson, Gabby Adams and Rachel Price, and were picked up from school on Monday 14 November.

Love in a Box, an initiative from the Mustard Seed Relief Mission, seeks to help under privileged children in Eastern Europe.

Homework Club award We were delighted to award Amber Olver, Year 8, with the first Homework Club sweatshirt in November.

Mrs Bryce was present to hand the sweatshirt to Amber for her fantastic commitment to Homework Club, and all the help she provides to make sure the club runs smoothly every day.

Well done Amber!

GCSE Presentation Evening

The annual GCSE Presentation Evening took place on 17 November, celebrating last year’s GCSE group and all of their brilliant achievements. GCSE certificates were handed out to all students in attendance, as well as a number of special individual awards recognising students’ success in certain subjects or disciplines.

Guest for the evening was Olympian Heather Fell, who spoke of her journey to winning a Silver medal in the Modern Pentathlon at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Despite a number of setbacks, most notably losing her funding from UK Sport, Heather persevered, continuing to work incredibly hard and reaching her goal.

After introductory speeches by Headteacher Isobel Bryce and Chair of Governors Kate Waghorn, those in attendance were treated to an amazing performance of Etta James’ ‘At Last’ by Emily Horsham.

Charlotte Barriball was recognised for her resilience, being presented with the Endeavour Award. Charlotte was diagnosed with Pre B Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, a type of cancer treated as Leukaemia, in the summer term of her year 10 GCSE course.

Charlotte achieved the remarkable feat of still gaining 6 A* – C grades in her GCSEs, and was hailed by the PE department was a ‘true warrior’, who completed an entire year course in the space of six weeks.

The evening ended with Year 12 students Jago Liddington and Holly Kiely giving their vote of thanks to Heather for her attendance.

Congratulations and good luck to all of the saltash.net students who completed their GCSEs in 2016.

The first Theme Day of the 2016-17 academic year took place on Tuesday 11 October, full of action packed events that offered something for every student.

Our Year 7s went on ‘a grand day out’, with half visiting Dartmoor and the others visiting Okehampton or Restormel Castle. Students who visited Burraton Reservoir on Dartmoor explored the landscape, taking part in first-hand field, a jaunt over Leather Tor,

and studied in the moorland environment, and all the flora and fauna which live on the moors.

Year 8s experienced a number of different activities, based around the themes of ‘Healthy Lifestyles’ or ‘Try something new!’. Students played Handball on the All Weather Pitch, gave trampolining a go in the Sports Hall and took part in a non-contact martial arts practice organised by Swashbuckling UK. Students also took part in Art, Creative Writing and Music sessions designed to help them explore their creative sides.

Qui a tué Kenny/Who killed Kenny? This was the question that half of Year 9 had to answer, as they enjoyed a day devoted to using their language skills to solve a murder mystery which embroiled the whole Language department team.

The fatal crime followed a delicious continental breakfast in the canteen, causing students to begin the search for the criminal. QR codes around the school provided clues as to the suspects and despite her best efforts, Madame Le Blanc (who bore a striking resemblance to Miss Yvinec) was forced to admit her guilt after being rumbled by students.

Theme Day 1 The rest of Year 9 took part in an interactive trip to Woodlands, where they solved a number of mathematical challenges around the site, as well as enjoyed the rides and entertainment on offer.Year 10 took part in a day of open discussion about serious issues that can affect student’s health and wellbeing. Issues raised included sexual health, dealing with stress alcohol abuse and the dangers of sexting.

All students from Year 11 visited Plymouth University, experiencing a day of taster sessions in different subject areas and exploring what the university has to offer.

Year 12 students competed in the annual ‘You’re Hired!’ competition, which last year was won overall by saltash.net student Kieran Marley. Representatives from KPMG led the day of challenges, and huge congratulations go to the students listed below who progressed to the next round of the competition:

Alex SwabeyKeith HarrisonLauren BlatterJaz MorrisJosh Tennant

Finally, Year 13s engaged in an important debate, with groups of students representing countries in a mock United Nations meeting. Countries had to debate and vote on a proposed resolution concerning Climate Change: ‘We resolve that all countries in the world should cut C02 emissions by 50% by 2050.’

Students researched and developed a position on the matter, before presenting in front of their fellow nations. Nations eventually agreed to amend the resolution, adopting the position that the United States and China should reduce their emissions by 60%, whereas other nations should reduce it by a much lower figure of 1%!

Director of Creativity at saltash.net, Amy Feldwick, hailed the success of the day.

She said: “Theme Day gave all year groups an opportunity to do something different. Trips to the Okehampton and Restormel Castles, Dartmoor and Woodlands were a great success. Back in school we had some fantastic external practitioners work with our Year 8 and 10 students. Thanks go to staff and students for engaging so brilliantly in such a wide variety of tasks.”

Maths Primary Day

Once again our 7 local primary schools joined us at saltash.net for a day of Mathemagician training.

Mrs Benzie and Miss Crook from the Maths department host these events for the primary children at the end of every half term, to explore areas of Mathematics which are not normally met within the school curriculum.

In the latest session, the children learned all about the importance of binary numbers and how they are used in our everyday lives.

They practised writing every number between 1 and 31 using binary code, and then used their skills to perform magic tricks on their friends.

All children who attended had a very enjoyable day, and many commented that it was “awesome” and “epic”.

We are already looking forward to our Christmas session later this half term.

Primary Languages DayOn Monday 14th November 2016 saltash.net held another very successful Primary Day of Languages, this time on the topic of Spanish language and South American culture.

Pupils from our partner schools (Bishop Cornish, Sir Robert Geffery’s, Landulph, St Germans, Burraton and St Stephens) were invited to join us for a fun day of cultural discovery and creative activities leading to a “show and tell” assembly with their parents at the end of the day.

They were able to showcase their stamped South American learning passports as well as their artistic creations.

The activities were planned and delivered by our Year 8 and 9 Language Leaders who did a fantastic job teaching and helping the primary pupils.

Building upon this success, we are planning our next Primary day of Languages which will take place on 6th February 2017 and where we will this time explore Asian cultures.

Our Language Leaders teams are already working on various workshops which will include calligraphy, story telling and traditional painting.

We will again invite our MAT partners who will be taken on a cultural tour of China and Japan, assisted by some native speakers. So watch this space and follow us on Twitter #saltashinternational

saltash.net community school would like to thank all prospective parents and pupils who attended its annual Open Evenings, held on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th October. Both evenings were packed to capacity with visitors able to enjoy a wide range of student led activities across the school.

Welcoming everyone to saltash.net was a performance from cast members of the production of ‘Billy Elliot’, who sang ‘Electricity’.

After the performance, Bronwen Hall, alongside fellow Head Student Rosie Thompson, offered their words of welcome to those in attendance, as did Head of Year 7 and Transition, Grant Taylor, and Headteacher, Isobel Bryce.

After the introductions and welcomes in the school’s main hall, student ambassadors led tours of the site where a whole host of interactive activities awaited everyone in the different curriculum areas.

Open Evening report Geography A Level trip to LondonA Level Geography students at saltash.net recently attended their second residential trip of the course, visiting Bristol Harbourside docks on the Monday 17th October and London Docklands regeneration the following day.

The trip supports the teaching of the World Cities unit at A2 level, and the main emphasis is to examine the context for urban regeneration and the ways in which this has been achieved through property led regeneration and sport led regeneration.

After spending a few hours in Bristol, the group travelled to London via the Blue Water retail Park near Dartford. The students had to study the retail park and its impact on the local towns. Dartford has witnessed quite significant change to its retail structure in recent years.

After spending a night in a Premier Inn in Beckton, East London, students enjoyed a hearty breakfast before catching the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to ExCel London in Canning Town where they met Bob Digby, who leads the fieldwork in London itself.

Students undertook interviews with local residents of Canning Town, a community in East London that missed out on the funding that accompanied the regeneration in the 80s and 90s. Many local people were not particularly impressed by the legacy of the Olympics in East London.

The group then travelled to Canary Wharf by DLR, before being shown the characteristics of this major financial centre, where 50% of the world financial trade passes through each year.

A visit to the Olympic Park raised questions about the relocation of communities, as took place with Devons Lane, to make way for the park.

A tiring but successful trip enjoyed by all!

Sports Personality winners 2016-17For the first time since its introduction, the saltash.net Sports Personality award has been presented to two students – Emily Hollister and Emily Sweet - for their excellent achievements in sport.

Head of PE, Rob Hawkins, could not separate the two students and their sporting accomplishments, deciding that the Pip Miller Memorial Award, donated by ex-governor, Ken Martin, in memory of his wife, should be presented to both of them.

Mr. Hawkins had the following to say about the two recipients of the award:

“Emily Hollister is one of the most talented football players that we have had at saltash.net and an amazing role model. She is mentally tough, committed, determined and reliable both within PE lessons and within a range of sports, involving herself in both leadership and coaching roles.

“As captain of her football team over the years she led by example and has regularly contributed to excellent results, scoring some fabulous goals and really setting the bench mark for girls’ football at saltash.net. She continues to push herself and now plays for Plympton Ladies in the South West division 1.”

“Emily Sweet is a superb all round consistent sporting performer. She always puts in 100% and never has a bad game. She is the ultimate tough team player, leads by example and is super hard working. She has incredibly high standards of herself in a sporting context and always fulfils her potential. Everybody needs a Sweet in their team and she epitomises everything that we promote at saltash.net within sport and PE.

“Her super positive attitude, coupled with never giving up, has made Emily a special person. She will be remembered for her grit, determination and positivity! She now regularly starts for Callington 1st team in the South West division 1.”

Rugby Festival 2016saltash.net students recently had the fantastic opportunity to take part in training sessions led by professional rugby coaches from across the local area.

On Monday 7 November and Tuesday 8 November, students from across Year 7 to 9 were taken for special coaching sessions, focusing on a number of aspects of rugby. The three coaches who visited the school are from Saltash RFC, but also work for the Rugby Football Union, taking sessions across Devon and Cornwall.

All the coaches spoke highly of the level of effort and commitment shown by the students who took part in the session.

A great day out for saltash.net at Twickenham

40 saltash.net students enjoyed a fantastic trip to Twickenham on 19 November, to watch England play Fiji in an Autumn international.

Forming part of a crowd of 81,409, the group witnessed England emerge victorious by 58 points to 15.

Organised by PE teacher Mr. Budd, a number of other staff members attended, including saltash.net Headteacher Isobel Bryce.

Departing saltash.net at 7am, the students travelled to the home of English rugby by Plymouth CityCoach, arriving in plenty of time before the 14.30 kick off.

The group was lucky enough to be seated in front of one of the media boxes covering the match, and so were able to see Sir Clive Woodward, who coached England to World Cup glory in 2003.

After the trip, Mr. Budd said:

“For many of the students who came on the trip it was their first trip to Twickenham, and it’s certainly a venue you don’t forget. Simply breathtaking. The anthems, Jerusalem and echoes of ‘swing low, sweet chariot’ really do make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

“A resounding 58-15 England victory ensured that everyone left the capital with smiles on their faces and with memories that will last a lifetime”.

All Saltash students in Year 7, 8 and 9 and our future students from Landulph did amazingly well, pushing themselves around our newly extended and more challenging course than previous years, competing hard and supporting each other along the way.

“The amount of smiling faces that crossed the finish line at the end of the race was great to see and confirmed that memories of this Cross Country would be largely positive!

“Well done to all those that ran and a special thanks to our Year 10 sports leaders who marshalled the course and supported the runners along the way.”

Storm netball team update

saltash.net’s Storm netball team has made great improvements, having now played half of the season in the Plymouth and District Junior netball league.

It has been hugely challenging, as they are competing against much more established clubs such as Marjons, Plymstock and Pilgrims, who have played together for a number of years.

The u13 side have improved their scores each week, and the result of their last fixture was a draw against a top team. The u16 team are gaining much experience and enjoying the challenge, and playing at the Life Centre is an experience in itself.

A huge thanks to Julie Woodman and Becky Reep, mother of student Bridie Reep, for coaching the squad, and Justin Lusher, father of Lois Lusher, for sponsoring the team. A thank you also goes to Year 10’s Evie Ross for designing the kit.

saltash.net showjumping team make great strides

saltash.net’s Showjumping team has been making great strides, securing terrific results in two early events in a bid to qualify for the British Showjumping Schools National Championship.

On 23rd October, 10 students took part in the Schools Team Showjumping at Tall Trees Arena, competing in 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 1 metre contests.

The team of Florence Wickham, Lucie Jones and Louisa Fleming came 2nd in the 90cm event, whilst three riders braved a huge 1 metre course. As a result of a fantastic performance, the team came 1st with Ellie Robinson also winning the individual event, with Demelza Morris finishing 2nd and Katie Flanagan finishing 3rd.

All the students supported each other fabulously in the face of tough competition from teams from Launceston and Callington. The team achieved even better results on Saturday 12 November, with four different classes entering and some superb individual and team achievements.

In the 80cm event, the Saltash Hearts - Macy Simpson (Year 8), Florence Wickham (Year 9), Louisa Fleming (Year 12) and Abi Baker (Year 11) - finished 2nd, whilst two Saltash teams finished 1st and 2nd in the 90cm competition.

In the 1m competition, the team of Demelza Morris (Year 10) Ellie Robinson (Year 13) Ellie Garland (Year 11) and Katie Flanagan (Year 8) rode to victory, claiming 1st place. There were also fantastic results in the 1m individual event, with Ellie Garland finishing 1st and Ellie Robinson 3rd.

These are fantastic results for the school, and a big well done and thank you goes to all involved.

Keen STEM students from saltash.net, as well as Year 5 and 6s from Landulph Primary School recently visited the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro, to learn about a speedy new project racing its way around Cornwall.

Accompanied by Head of Science, Mr. Henderson, and technician, Mrs Powell, students were introduced to the BLOODHOUND Project – the creation of a car that can hopefully reach speeds of over 1000mph! The car is being tested in Cornwall, and uses a combined jet and rocket engine, and hopes to break the current land speed record.

After hearing about how the BLOODHOUND Project works, and exploring the museum, the students had the challenge of building their own cars and testing them on a track.

After the event, Mr. Henderson said:

“We didn’t quite reach 1000 mph but by scaling up our efforts the best design did reach the equivalent of over 500 mph. Well done Landulph and we look forward to seeing you here at saltash.net next year.”

STEM club is open to all year 7 students at saltash.net and runs on a Wednesday after school. If interested, see Mr Henderson for more information.

In October, the students took part in their Bronze Expedition. The assessor was really pleased with the teams, saying that they were in the top 20% of teams he had assessed throughout the expedition season.

The assessor also commented on how welcome the students made him feel and how nice they were to assess. We had a beautiful couple of days for their walking and the most amazing sunset over Siblyback Lake while the students were relaxing at the camp.

The students will continue to work towards their award and the other sections will start to now be signed off. Well done to all that were involved and thanks to all the staff that came to help.

Bring Your Grown-Up To School day

With just over half a term at saltash.net under their belts, our Year 7s were invited to bring their families into school to discover just what the students get up to.

Bring Your Grown-Up To School, an annual tradition at saltash.net, took place on Thursday 10th November, and featured a morning of superb creativity, from both students and parents. This year’s BYGUTS was a record breaking event, with over 150 grown-ups coming to enjoy and take part in the fun.

Students and their parents were split into groups, each being led by a member of teaching staff, and assigned a Cornish hero on which they were to create a creative and eye-catching presentation.

Participation by all involved was fantastic, as the groups got stuck into Cornish figures such as novelist Daphne du Maurier, the Eden Project’s Tim Smit, master mariner Captain Bligh, Bishop Trelawny, the last native Cornish-speaker Dolly Pentreath, and the crew of the Penlee Lifeboat disaster.

The morning’s activities were based on Integrated Learning, a subject that Year 7 take alongside more traditional subjects like English, Maths and Science. Integrated Learning teaches students about the “SECRET” skills of Self-management, Effective participation, Creative thinking, being a Reflective learner, an independent Enquirer and an effective Team worker.

The creative limits of both students and parents showed no bounds, as all groups created fantastic art displays, whilst others also opted to present their hero via song and dance. Students had earlier made full use of the resource banks, containing every colour of paint, glue, paper and everything needed to create a wonderful work of art.

Deputy Head Teacher Mrs Griffin, once more acting as judge, enjoyed all the performances, but deemed Mrs Benzie’s group’s presentation on Captain Bligh, from HMS Bounty to be the best.

Students from the winning group have been treated to a breakfast during registration as a reward for their hard work and victory.

“We really aim to welcome parents and carers into their children’s school lives,” explained Grant Taylor, Head of Year 7 and Transition. “Bring Your Grown-Up To School day is a real celebration of how well Year 7 have settled into this next stage of their learning journey! They are proud to show off their new school to their families, and we are proud of our fantastic Year 7s!”

Parents left very positive feedback, with many praising the friendly and fun atmosphere, whilst one parent noted that that having the chance to work with her daughter, alongside her classmates and other parents was a real plus.

saltash.net was recently re-accredited as an International School, recognis-ing the school’s ability to bring an international dimension to teaching and learning.

To mark the award, Headteacher Isobel Bryce, alongside Miss Tremellat and Mrs Carr from the Languages department at saltash.net attended a celebra-tion at Plymouth Council House on Thursday 10 November.

Also in attendance representing the school were Year 13 students Dan Frank-land and Zac Hyams, who confidently spoke of the opportunities they have received at saltash.net.

British Council Ambassador, Jill Bailey, said Dan and Zac “definitely stole the show and really impressed the audience.”

After the event, Zac said “It was great to see all the International work going on in the area because it’s so important that young people are involved in international enterprises and learn about the world we live in.”

The award means the school is accredited until 2021, having first been awarded back in 2010.

Miss Tremelatt added: “We are very proud to have received this award in the presence of the Mayors of Saltash and Plymouth, as well as our Head Teacher. Receiving this award recognises the great range of international opportuni-ties which our students have here at saltash.net.”
