TE RITQ TAPA CLOTH

Staff at Avebury House were delighted bythe presentation made by the tamariki of

Richmond School in September.

Te Rito Tapa Cloth features a uniquecontribution from each individual atRichmond School. It's creation was inspiredby the quilts the children had been gifted bythe Avebury House Hugs All Round group.Due to the imminent closure of RichmondSchool at the end of the year a new location

was sought to display the School's HonourBoard, which dates back to 1909, and theMemorial Roll representing those fromthe Richmond area who served in the FirstWorld War. Also gifted to the House was theSchool's bell.

Pride of place will no doubt be given to TeRito Tapa Cloth, both gifted and receivedwith great significance, when it adorns awall at Avebury House.

1960's, during this time it was known as theCora Wilding Youth Hostel. The Youth HostelAssociation using the House at this time washighly significant as it prevented the intendeddemolition of the House,

Devonshire teas proved popular among thevisitors to the House and were served in theFlesher Room overlooking the expansivefront lawn and the beautifully cared forgardens. The opportunity to try one's handat horseshoe tossing and petanque was alsoavailable with a few of the younger visitors tothe House partaking in this.

It was an absolute delight for the staff to havecurrent members of the Flesher family attendthis event and a wonderful day was enjoyedby all.

- Roy L, Goodman

Roy L. Goodman was a violinist bornin 1951. He was 12 when he became asoloist for The Choir of Kings collegein Cambridge England

The finished product: Kids from the Richmond area proudly wear their handmade quilts

The Hugs All Round group, an industrious circle of women, were able to return to AveburyHouse. By early October they had made two presentations of their lovingly handcrafted

quilts. The creator of each of these unique quilts, personally gifts it to the child it is intendedfor. This is done in such a heart-warming manner, where the quilt is wrapped around thechild, who is then embraced, not just by the warmth of the quilt but with all the loving carethat has gone into its creation.

Rocky Roads

Taking the Orbiter bus route at the momentis no picnic for people wanting to travel

through Shirley/Richmond, unless you likeroller-coasters. The east-side of Chrislchurchstill carries the devastating after-effects ofour big Quake and subsequent aftershocks. But its not just about the bumps and bruiseson our roads it is also the repair workbeing done to fix the situation. Althoughthoroughly grateful for the amount of workour construction workers are putting into theproblem, there are some big consequences forour business owners and some are fightinghard to stay in Richmond. The Richmond Community News Interviewedtwo businesses to get the bigger pictureabout road closures and thier effects. TheRichmond New World was quick to respondwith a celebration of sorts with the news ofthe northern end of Stanmore Road beingopened to two way traffic again after 5months of just being one-way. They invitedthe Canterbury Crusaders Rugby Team alongto celebrate. Justin Purcell, the co-ownerof Richmond New World said he saw thenegative effects on a suburb first-hand whena main Road like Stanmore is given limitedaccess. Not only is the New World onethe biggest businesses in the area it is alsoRichmonds largest employer. The closuretook its toll on people coming into the area.Richmond had lost "a lot of life" after theQuake and thought that little events likethis one could "bring back the communitiesvitality".At the northern end of Stanmore Road isalso where the local post shop sits. Apartfrom being well known in Christchurch forhaving one of the largest collections of hobbymagazines it is also becoming famous forits Hugs. The Richmond Village Bookshopsits on the alternate passing route for peoplegoing to-and-from the Palms shopping mall.It has a strategic place for traffic wantingto side-step the hustle and bustle of Shirleyroad. The temporary closure of North AvonRoad really took its toll on business and has

left its future (like a lot of Richmonds localbusinesses) Up-in-the-Air. Added to theconfusion, the city council are still 'decidingwhat to do about the area' making decisionsabout the future even harder. The People inRichmond are changing also. There seemsto be a wave of people who are just stayingtemporarily as they wait for the city to berebuilt so Richmond is still finding it hard tobuild a sense of community. Thev are alsoj j

in the process of upgrading to the new postsystem which they hope will save people thebother of catching a bus to one of the malls."Post Shops are the centre of day to dayservice and conversation in a community" .This as well as their 'free-hugs' and 'come infor a chat' policy is another way of bringingthe spark back to Richmond.(If you have an Idea about the future of
