Hard work and dedication make Bella VitaRestaurant a Maple Ridge landmark

Every morning, even beforemany Maple Ridge residentsare awake, Vassilios (Bill)Voukelatos is in his crowdedkitchen. However, he is notmaking breakfast. Hes busycutting fine meats, stirringaromatic sauces, slicing freshsalads and simmering soups

as he prepares for a variety ofmeals to be served at the BellaVita Restaurant.Hard work is Voukelatos

trademark and he has madeBella Vita a resounding suc-cess in Maple Ridge. Its awork ethic he developed onhis family farm in Greece. Inthe post-Second World Wareconomy, he knew finding em-ployment was going to be diffi-cult, so in 1964 he immigratedto Canada.Voukelatos spent seven years

in Montreal and Toronto train-ing to be a chef. He heard theweather was better in BritishColumbia, so in 1971 he ven-tured out west taking a job atthe Knight and Day restau-rant. In 1974, the Bella VitaRestaurant opened across thestreet, but three months later

it was listed for sale, and af-ter thoughtful consideration,Voukelatos purchased it.It has always been a success

all these years, says Voukela-tos. I work hard and I knowthe business, especially thecooking business. He says cooking is number

one and service is not far be-hind. Youve got to have themboth. Bella Vita, which canseat up to 220, has becomea place to celebrate a specialdate, birthdays, anniversa-ries, graduations, promotionsand couples have chosen thebeautiful atmosphere for theirwedding venues. The dining room tables are

presented with linen tablecloths and napkins, and com-plimented with elegant set-tings and sweet smelling free-sia each week. The decor hasa warm, modern feeling withmurals of Bills village area ofGreece; among them are Creteand Corfu, all painted by JohnGreco.Although Voukelatos is Greek,

the cuisine is continental. Theenticing menu provides a list

of savoury selections with rootsin many countries includingGermany. Ive had Germanssay my schnitzel is better thantheirs.Customers love to try a new

culinary experience eachweek, tasting new foods whilecreating memories. Among

the most popular dishes Billdescribes, are the three-course Chefs Choice steakand lobster, and rack of lambat $29.95; included are achoice of one of the six appeal-ing appetizers and one of thefour divine desserts. For theadventurous, you may choosefrom entrees of prime rib, hali-but, and leg of lamb, chickenbreast and sockeye salmon.Appetizer items on our regularmenu at the Bella Vita includeescargot, prawns, mussels, seafood chowder and Frenchonion soup.Having the tantalizing cha-

teaubriand at $64.95, aluscious seafood platter at$89.95, and the spectacularbeef and seafood platter at$99.95 is a nice way to sharea special evening.

The seafood selections rangefrom $18.95 to $33.95, schnit-zels and pastas sell at under$20. We also have an appeal-ing six-item low-calorie menuand an inviting childrensmenu. For a more casual evening,

    the adjoined Odyssey pub-

style Bistro serves a great se-lection of meals. Here we visitand meet new friends whilecheering on our favorite teamson the four HD TVs. Thereis also a separate privateroom which accommodatesup to 55 people per seating.Thats a fantastic spot to watchsports. It has four HD televi-sions and a 152-inch HD pro- jection screen. Its decoratedwith Vancouver Canucks andsoccer memorabilia. In re-cent years, Vassillios has been joined in the restaurants op-eration by his son Evagelos,21, who manages the front, generating fresh ideas as hecontinues his education, whiledad continues his joy of cook-ing back in the kitchen.Im trying to bring in a new

    younger clientele, says Evage-

los. People have the ideafrom walking past the diningroom window with all the crisplinens in view, that its a priceyplace to dine and only for spe-cial occasions. But that is notnecessarily the case.He maintains that compared

    to many fine-dining franchise

restaurants in the Lower Main-land, Bella Vita is more afford-able with excellent quality. Itsa good place for a first date.Just because Evagelos has

come on board doesnt meanhis dad is going anywheresoon.I will never quit, at least until

my hands and legs tell me togo, says Voukelatos. That is good news for both

long-time and brand new peo-ple who grace the Bella VitaRestaurant with their presenceas they enjoy this casually-elegant experience with familyand friends. Bill & Evageloswould like to extend a sincereThank You to all of their cus-tomers and friends.

    5 consumer tips

1.Know what you dontknow be clear andhonest with yourself

in identifying situa-tions where you mayneed legal advice.

    2. To be successful inbusiness, you have tobe prepared to spend

a dime to save a dollar but dont spend adollar to save a dime.

    3. Always be open toasking questions ofyour lawyer, ac-

countant and otherprofessional advisors.Understand clearlywhat youre paying for.

    4. When pursuing apersonal injury claim, always understand

that an insurancecompany is not yourfriend.

    5. Dont bring a knifeto a gunfight makesure your lawyer has

the time and expertiseto meet the challengeof a personal injurycase in court.

Becker fi rm adds expertise to meet new demandThe biggest transfer of wealth

in history is beginning to hap-

    pen.

    The earliest Baby Boomers

    are reaching their retirement

    years and passing away, hand-

    ing down their assets often

    quite substantial because of

    the dramatic increases in prop-

erty values over the past half-

    century to their offspring.

This, in turn, can raise several

    kinds of legal implications as

to what happens with all that

    money. And preparations for

this new demand for their ser-

vices are well under way at thePitt Meadows-based law firm

    Becker & Company Lawyers.

    The benefits of decades of

    hard work are being passed

into the hands of a new gen-

    eration, said the firms owner,

    John Becker. Without proper

    legal and tax planning, much

of that value could be lost to

    taxes.

    The Becker firm just hired

on a new lawyer, Ms. Jaime

    Ashby, with special expertise

in tax law to help meet the new

    demand.

It is also readying to take on

more work in two other areas:

    personal injury claims and le-

    gal issues associated with the

    resurgence of the B.C. econ-

    omy.

    On personal injury cases,

Becker said the 50 years of

experience represented bylead lawyers Gene Fraser and

    Tom Dinsley gives clients the

    assurance of quality legal rep-

    resentation.

The larger size of the firm has

allowed the firm to develop key

    relationships with the private

sector to help fund the often

    lengthy and expensive court

    battles involved when taking

    on insurance companies.

    Those companies will spend

    big money to prevent claims

    from succeeding, he said,

    and use lawyers who special-

ize in those types of cases at

all times. In reply, the Becker

firm can offer not just its expe-

    rience and financial backing,

    but full-time dedication of one

of its lawyers to such a case.

Here we have the ability to

    have one lawyer who does

nothing for one month but bein court for this client, Becker

    said.

And on the rebound of the

    economy, Becker said projects

that had been stalled are now

    going ahead, and the business-

    es pursuing them are growing

    in size and complexity.

    Their needs are becoming

    more sophisticated and com-

    plicated, and we believe its

    important that clients under-

    stand the cost-benefits of legal

    planning when theyre reorga-

    nizing their business.

The ability to take on these

    various new demands marks

    the substantial growth of the

firm since it was first founded

by Becker as a small law office

    in Maple Ridge in 1981.

The firm now has seven law-

yers and with 20 staff has

quadrupled its office floorspace when it moved to its

    current location less than two

    years ago.

Becker said his law office pro-

vides the best of both worlds

for those in the area seeking

    legal assistance.

    The technology we use is

    state-of-the-art, were using

the same systems as the big

    firms in Vancouver, he said.

    We can offer an equivalent

    competency closer to home,

at a better price point. And we

can react in a nimble way to

    changes in best practices as

    well as technology.

But at the same time, the firm

is in no danger of evolving into

a big box legal firm, Becker

    said.

No one here wants it to be-

    come that, he said. When

people come in, its on a first-name basis. Theyre not in-

    timidated. If theyve got kids,

    weve got crayons and colour-

ing books at the front desk.

We know our clients and they

    know us.

Expert advice, service sets Home Hardware apartNeighbourhood stores are an

    anchor in the community. They

cater to the basic needs of res-

    idents, provide convenience

    and personalized service.

    Home Hardware is a leading

    example of this business mod-

el. Even though it is part of a

    large corporation, each store is

    independently owned and re-

    flects the community it serves.

We all belong to the same

buying group but as an owneryou have the flexibility to per-

    sonalize your store, said Scott

    ODell, who owns the Home

    Hardware in Maple Ridge.

    It gives you the opportunity

to find that niche in each com-

    munity.

    Home Hardware has certainly

found their niche in the lawn

and garden area and have be-

come known for a place where

you can find the product and

    service you need. The store

carries a wide selection of sea-

    sonal patio furniture, lighting,

    garden tools, planters, fertiliz-

    ers, hoses, ornaments and of

    course barbecues. Custom-

ers will also find a variety of

lawn and garden equipment, everything from blowers and

    mowers to trimmers and lawn-

    tractors. Each is delivered

    and assembled at no extra

charge. That is very rare for

    any store. said ODell. Home

Hardware also has a full time

    repair shop which fixes every-

    thing from lawnmowers and

    landscaping equipment

    With hundreds of products

    to choose from, Home Hard-

    ware has every decorating and

    renovation need covered. The

    store has a dedicated electri-

    cal, plumbing, painting, hard-

    ware, housewear and sporting

    goods department.

    When asked how he com-

petes with larger box storecompetitors, ODell responds

    With 1,100 Home Hardware

    stores across the country,

    Home Hardware certainly has

    enough buying power to be

    price competitive and the di-

    versity of products available to

each store is enormous but its

    our service that separates us

    from our competitors.

    Apart from having friendly and

    knowledgeable staff who can

    help you with any household

    need, Home Hardware will fix

    most anything, will assemble

    everything and will deliver for

    free.

And by the way, we dont

even charge an annual fee to

shop here, ODell jokes.Home Hardware is also a

    100% Canadian-owned com-

    pany with each store being

    owned separately by a mem-

    ber of that community.

    Most of the employees at

    Home Hardware have worked

there for years and have estab-

    lished personal relationships

    with their customers. They of-

    fer expert advice, friendly ser-

    vice and provide a hasslefree

    shopping experience.

    They take pride in what

they do and care more, said

    ODell.

    We go through days where

    every other customer we know

    by name.

We want people to come-back so well go that extra mile

to find them what they need.

If we dont have it, well get

    it for you.

    5 consumer tips

    1. Plan your per-

    sonal visit so you

    can enjoy a com-plimentary lunch

    or dinner.

    2.Speak to current

    residents to find

out how they feelabout the retire-

    ment community.

    3. Get to know the

    person who will

be taking you onyour personal visit

    so they can cus-

    tomize your visit.

    4. Ask to meet the

    chef.

    5. To get the full

    experience of a

    retirement com-munity, ask about

    a trial stay.

Willow Manor offers levels of independenceFor many seniors, one chal-

    lenge in picking a retirement

home is finding a place that will

    provide the different levels of

care they will need over time.

    Willow Manor Seniors Com-

    munity is attempting to address

    that. It already offers indepen-

    dent retirement and complex

care suites, and is planning to

open an in-between level of light

    care in February.

    Willow Manor marketing man-

ager Cindy Hiebert said the light

    care program will allow seniors

    to receive some needed care

    while remaining involved in so-

    cial activities and communitylife.

    In combination with the inde-

    pendent retirement and com-

plex care suites, it will allow

    Willow Manor residents to re-

    ceive increased care when they

need it, while still keeping many

elements of independence. We have all three levels, she

    said. That really separates us

    from the competition.

    Hiebert said the advantage of

those different levels of care is

that people can start with an

    independent retirement suite

and move to more care when

they need it without leaving the

    building.

It allows them to age in place,

she said. Its just very conve-

    nient.

    Light care could include such

    elements as assistance with

    bathing, medication and dress-

ing and undressing, issuesmany seniors deal with while still

desiring to retain some of their

    independence.

    Youre still independent to a

    certain degree, Hiebert said.

    Another particular focus of Wil-

low Manor is providing a plethora

of social activities for residents. For most seniors coming in,

    the two most important fac-

tors are food and a social life,

Hiebert said. We have a wide

    variety of different activities; its

just a matter of picking what you

    want.

    Inside the manor, Willow offers

    fitness classes, bingo and Happy

    Hour events several times every

week. They also have Tai Chi,

    pet therapy, a Knitters Club,

    regular visits from entertainers

and books dropped off from the

    library. Willow also does special

    events, including the upcoming

Robbie Burns Dinner.Hiebert said one very popular

    recurring event is Willows after-

    noon teas.

    We have different teas through-

out the month, she said. The

ladies love to get together and

    use the fancy teacups.

In addition to scheduled ac-tivities, Willow Manor also has

    plenty of facilities for casual

recreation. It has a games room,

an activity room, a fitness area,

    library areas among others. It

has its own hair salon and a

    hairdresser who makes regular

    trips to the facility. Residents

can make their own regular or

    one-off appointments.

    Willow also has regular church

services at the facility, led by

    Catholic and Anglican clergy,

    but conducted in a non-denom-

    inational style.

Hiebert said its crucial to pro-

vide a diverse assortment of en-tertainment and services at the

manor to make things easy for

    those who live there.

Its very important to have a lot

of activities on site, she said.

Theyll have quite a wide vari-

    ety of things to try.

Willow tries to provide accessto lots of entertainment options

    and community events and ser-

vices as well, including trips to

    restaurants, casinos, and vari-

    ous shops.

We have our own bus that

    goes out into the community,

    Hiebert said.

    Willow Manors location, on 224

Street near 122 Avenue, also al-

    lows for convenient access to

    many shops and services.

    Were very centrally located in

Maple Ridge, so its easy for our

    residents to get around, Hie-

    bert said.

At the manor itself, the focus ison trying to make residents and

    visitors as comfortable as pos-

    sible.

When people walk in, they feel

    at home, Hiebert said. Seniors

    want something thats bright,

    warm and homey.

Billy Miner Pub brings back the pastEverything old is new again at the

    Billy Miner Pub.

As it has for a century, the build-ing stands stately overlooking themighty Fraser River and the old

Canadian Pacific Railway tracksat what was once the thriving

community of Port Haney. The neighbourhood pub on Riv-

er Road was bought a year ago,and extensive renovations werestarted right away. The interior

has already been completed andthe pub, along with good food and

beverages, serves up heapinghelpings of history. This year, the

old post office building next door, previously used as a liquor store,

will be converted into the PortHaney Coffee House with a patioconnecting the two buildings. It

will be family friendly and conve-nient for commuters on the West

Coast Express. Were dusting off an old building

and bringing back the history of

Port Haney, says Billy Miner Pubmanager Niki Reibin. We want tobring it back to that gem on the

river. The building will be 100 years

old on Oct. 1 and has been de-clared a heritage site. It was builtas a Bank of Montreal, just the

third in British Columbia. In 1932,the bank moved up to Lougheed

Highway after a fire destroyedmost of Port Haney, but the origi-

nal two-storey building survived. It was then used for housing, andafter the Second World War, many

veterans and their families stayedthere as they awaited their new

    homes. The building was bought

in 1973 by Don and Bernice Geh-ring, who restored it and openedthe pub in 1981.When doing the renovations last

year, workers found old bank led-gers from 1921. The cooler is the

old bank safe and the doors arefrom the wickets where the tellers

stood. The pub is now decoratedin every nook and cranny with oldbottles, jugs, books and train lan-terns. The walls are crammed full

of framed newspaper clippings, pictures and historical memora-

bilia, including a classic Bank ofMontreal calendar. An old wood

stove sits in the corner. The signabove the front door is old-stylestained glass.

Its sort of like walking on oldbones, says Reibin as she makes

her way through the pub.The whereabouts of Billy Miners

actual bones, however, are un-known.The 60-year-old American, along

with cohorts in crime Shorty Dunnand Lewis Colquhoun, pulled off

British Columbias first train rob-bery on Sept. 10, 1904 boarding

CPR No. 1 just after it left Mis-sion. They took more than $6,000in gold dust, $914.37 in cash and

    an $80,000 bond before escap-

ing across the Fraser River andthen on horseback into the United

States.Miner was caught in 1905 rob-

bing a train near Kamloops and

incarcerated at the B.C. Peniten-tiary from which he escaped on

June 24, 1906.On the pubs west wall is a $1,500

wanted poster from the CPR, anda $500 one issued by police fol-lowing his prison escape. Miner

was never caught after that and isbelieved to have died in the U.S.

During the robbery, Miner andhis little gang left $7.94 scattered

across the baggage car, a figurethe pub has pegged as its price

for a jug of beer on Mondays. Themenu is littered with references toMiner, the robbery and the bank

including Billys Ribbies, BankRobber Quesadillas, Shorty Dunn

Smokehouse Wings, Train RobberNachos, Billy Hash, Put-them-upHash, Fill the Vault three-meat

entree, Chili Billy and a Hands-upand Hold the Meat Panini. Theprices, ranging from $7 to $20,

are affordable and dont makepatrons feel like theyve been

robbed, unlike CPR officials morethan a century ago.History may ooze out of every

plank in the place but its mixedin with lots of large screen televi-

sions and keno games. Its a par-ticularly popular place to watch

hockey and other sports alongwith friendly faces. The pub has also revived an old

pub tradition of music jams onSunday nights. Its a mix of blues

and old rock put together by Rob-

ert Campbell, the same man whodid it for the previous owners. Its just one more old thing that is

new again at the Billy Miner Pub.

5 reasons to shop at Roots Natural

    1. Knowledgeable staff

    and old-fashioned

    customer service.

    2. Quality tested

    supplements.

    3. Wide selection of

    wheat-free and

    gluten-free foods.

    4. 100% certified

    organic produce.

    5. No chemicals, pre-

    servatives, artificial

    flavours or colours,guaranteed.

Healthy, natural products the cornerstone of RootsJeff Miller has run Roots

    Natural Organic Foods for two

    decades now, but the store

    has changed significantly in

    that time.

I bought it 20 years ago,

Jeff says. It was a quarter of

    the size it is now.

    There have been significant

    product changes in that time,

too, as the store has evolved

from a specialty shop into a

    full-service organic grocery.

    It was your typical hippie

granola thing, Jeff says. Now were full-service.

    Jeff says the stores mission

    hasnt changed, however.

    Were trying to help people

be healthy, he says. We try

    to sell good natural products.

    Jeff says eating properly and

    living healthily is a lifestyle,

and hes tried to make his

    store a community-focused

place that can help people do

    that.

Thats the way I live, he

    says. I made it a store I

    would want to shop in.

Jeff says it can be difficult for

    people to make sure theyre

    buying natural products at a

    regular grocery store, which

    is where Roots Natural comesin.

    We do the shopping for

    you, he says. You dont

    have to read the labels,

    because we do. We stand

    behind all our products.

    Jeff co-owns the store with

    his wife, Tammy. She says

    theyre committed to ensur-

ing only the best products are

    sold in their store.

We dont sell it unless weve

    tried it, she says.

A growing part of their busi-

    ness has been natural dietary

    supplements, which Jeff says

are crucial to overall health in

    this era of heavily processed

    foods.

No matter how good youthink you eat these days, you

    cant get everything from your

    foods, he says. Youve got

to fill that gap, and thats what

    the supplements do.

    The store was founded in

1971, and Jeff says its the

    oldest remaining natural foods

    store in the Lower Mainland.

    He says Maple Ridge has

    been the perfect location for

    him.

    The customer base is awe-

    some, he says. The loyal

    day-to-day customer has built

our business. If you want to

build a good natural food cus-

tomer base, this is the place

    to build it.

Jeff says many of his custom-ers and their families have

been coming to the store for

    decades.

    Its a whole community, he

says. Weve hired lots of our

    customers kids.

    The store also hosts speak-

ers on healthy living. Jeff says

    the speakers are an important

part of their goal to improve

    peoples health.

    We just try to educate

    people, he says.

    Jeff says the education has

caught on, as theres an ever-

    growing interest in natural

    foods.

    Health foods arent just for

    hippies any more, theyre

for everyone, he says. Itsa part of everyday life; its a

    lifestyle.

    5 consumer tips

    1.Make sure your dry

    cleaner uses cur-

    rent technologies toremove spots from

    garments.

    2. Bring in stained

    garments as soon as

    possible.

    3. Do not iron stained or

    soiled clothing. This

will set stains anddrive the soil deeper

    into the fabric.

    4. Do not rub a stain,

    especially when

    trying to remove onefrom silk.

    5. If goods with a

    strong chemical

odour are returned toyou frequently, try a

    different dry cleaner.

Eco-friendly dry cleaning key at Meadows CleanersAt Meadows Cleaners, locat-

ed in both Maple Ridge and

Pitt Meadows, the priority is to

    provide unequalled dry-clean-

    ing service, specifically using a

system that does as little en-

    vironmental damage as pos-

    sible. Sohrab Yazdgerdian and

    his wife Mahnaz operate the

    Pitt Meadows location, while

    his brother Russ, and Russ

son Ardeshir, run the store in

    Maple Ridge.

    At some point, our world

is going to have to pay the

    price for not being environ-

    mentally friendly; poor prac-

tices will catch up, says Russ

    Yazdgerdian.

One of the key tactics they

    take is using advanced ma-

    chinery that reduces or elimi-

nates much of the waste tra-

    ditionally generated in the

    dry-cleaning process. They

even have a way to removewaste from the water used so

    it can be recycled.

We have a filter machine that

takes out all the sludge, Russ

says. Even the water is biode-

    gradable.

Another focus is their use of

    EcoSolv, a non-toxic substance

    that doesnt have a harmful

    impact on the environment.

    Its environmentally friendly

    and biodegradable, says

    Russ.

    Using less-toxic solvents ben-

    efits everyone, from the work-

ers who dont have to inhale

    harmful chemicals, to the

    customers who can feel good

about the fact that when they

    bring their items to Meadows

    Cleaners, their dry-cleaning

    doesnt damage the planet.

Its good for my staff, my

    customers and myself, Russ

smiles. My staff doesnt haveto worry.

    EcoSolv also carries another

    distinct advantage over con-

    ventional solvents; it doesnt

    have a noticeable odour, so

    clothes are available to be

    worn instantly.

    If you use other solvents,

you cant use the clothes right

    away, says Russ. My stuff,

    there is no smell.

    Also, unlike some other sol-

    vents, Ecosolv also cleans

    without carrying the risk of

    destroying fabric. This benefit,

    combined with their advanced

    equipment, allows Meadows

    Cleaners to promise their cus-

    tomers that their garments will

not be harmed by their clean-

    ing process.

I guarantee items will not be

    damaged, Russ says. There

    are no worries about shrinking,

colour loss, any of that kind ofthing, thanks to our high-tech

    machinery.

    The environmental focus ex-

    tends to their garment bags,

    which are biodegradable.

They crush in six to eight

    weeks, Russ says. The other

    bags take years.

    Another important factor

    about the bags we use,

shared Russ, is that they are

    also made in this country.

    Russ strongly believes in the

    importance of supporting

    Canadian business whenever

    possible.

    Meadows Cleaners can clean

    everything from leather jackets

to silks to suede to tuxedos to

    wedding gowns, and they even

    clean non-apparel items. We

do all sheepskin and wool rugs

    and so much more, Russ

    says.

They do same-day serviceon many items, and are open

    from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday

    through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5

    p.m. on Saturdays.

    They also have a seamstress

    who does zippers, hems and

    all other sorts of alterations

    and repairs.

    For the entire Yazdgerdian

family, the larger focus is not

    just running a dry-cleaning

    business, but rather running a

business that does a great job

    of dry-cleaning while taking

    care of the environment.

    If I couldnt be environmen-

    tally-friendly, I wouldnt have a

    business, Russ declares. We

all have to do our part for the

    planet.

    3. Does the store

    tion you need?

    4. Does the store

    have knowledge-

    able and trainedstaff?

    5. Does the store

    offer personalized

    customer service?

Bruce Fuller and wife Linda, with sons Justin and David at Fuller Watson furniture, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce.

Customer service Fuller Watsons key to successFuller Watson has a new look

    this year.

    The two-storey retailer, locat-

ed on the corner of Lougheed

    Highway and 224th Street,

    has undergone a storefront

    makeover and now boasts new

    framed windows, doors and

    outdoor signage.

Its an old building and it was

    time for a needed upgrade,

    says manager Bruce Fuller.

Starting out as a general store,

    the family-run business was

    started by Bruces grandfather

in 1924. When he was only

    eight years old, Bruce started

    contributing to the Fuller Wat-

    son legacy, first sweeping the

    sidewalks of the store outside,

    then running the warehouse,

    then the hardware store, and

    now managing what the store

    is today.

    The Fuller team now includes

    Bruces wife Linda, and sons

    David and Justin.

    Over the years, Fuller Watson

has become a fixture in the

    community. The secret to the

    stores success is customer

    service, says Bruce. Its what

    has kept customers coming

back to the retailer for more

    than eight decades.

Its just making sure that at

the end of the day people are

    happy with the product that

    theyve purchased, added

Justin. If there are issues at

the time of delivery or after de-

livery, well look after them to

make sure they have a quality

    product for many years.

    Fuller Watson provides de-

    livery throughout the Lower

    Mainland as well as appliance

    installation. With a full parts

    and service department, staff

members are able to travel to

    customers homes to do re-

    pairs. This service allows for

items to be repaired in a timely

    manner without having to be

    sent to the manufacturer.

    Fuller Watson offers some-

thing for everyone at an af-

    fordable price. As a member

    of BrandSource Canada, the

store has the buying power to

    compete with big box retailers.

They offer a 30-day price guar-

    antee, financing options and

    warranty support.

    Carrying major brands such

    as GE, Simmons, Serta, Ashley,

    Palliser and La-Z-Boy, Fuller

    Watson offers a large selection

    throughout the 20,000 square-

    foot showroom.

    Downstairs boasts numerous

    stainless steel fridges, appli-

    ances, leather sectionals, flat

    screen TVs and mattresses.

    Upstairs, customers can

browse through an array of din-

    ing room table sets, upholstery

    and bedroom furniture.

With more than 80 years of

    experience in the industry,

    Fuller Watson continues to be

    a reputable and valued retailer.

    In 2008, the Maple Ridge-Pitt

    Meadows Chamber of Com-

    merce awarded the business

    a Lifetime Achievement Award

for its role in the community.

    Dedicated and knowledgeable

staff are at the heart of Fuller

    Watsons success. Many have

    become familiar faces to re-

    peat customers.

    Its about personalized ser-

    vice, said Justin. We offer

    friendly, courteous service from

the moment you walk in the

    door through your delivery.

5 reasons to visit Ecowest Renovations

    1. Sales staff prepare

    clear, easy to under-

    stand and compre-hensive estimates.

    2. Projects are made

    simple and easy.

    3. The referral program

    gives customers a

    way to earn extramoney.

    4. Customers can view

    product samples and

    installation optionsin an inviting office/

    showroom.

    5. With hundreds of

    satisfied Ecowest

    customers in thearea, chances are

    you already know

    one.

Customer referrals keep Ecowest growingMany renovation companies

specialize in particular areas, such as roofing, ventilation ordecks. Ecowest Renovations gotits start this way, primarily focus-ing on windows and doors. Now,however, Ecowest has expandedto offer just about any renovationservice you could want, fromfireplaces to siding.Aaron Vaughan, co-owner of the

company and sales manager, says Ecowest can now help cus-tomers with any job, a one-stopshop for home renovations. We want to be peoples con-

tractors for life, he explained. Its an ambitious goal, but one

theyre well on their way towardachieving. Vaughan said that15 per cent of Ecowests busi-ness is repeat customers look-ing to do additional renovations, and another 35 per cent comesthrough referrals from satisfiedcustomers. Ecowest also offerssubstantial referral incentivesto thank their customers for

spreading the message of cus-tomer satisfaction through wordof mouth.Weve paid over $25,000 in re-

ferral bonuses to date, Vaughanadded. He believes that another key

to Ecowests success is offeringcustomers professional, detailedestimates with a variety of op-tions for any renovation. We are able to work with peo-

ples budgets and help them de-cide what their priorities are, ifthey cant afford to do everythingthey want to do right away, hesaid.Offering a wide selection of

services allows the companyto simplify renovations for theircustomers by removing sched-uling hassles. If clients are dealing with sev-

eral different companies, it canbe very difficult to coordinate.

Vaughan advises that now is aparticularly good time to do reno-vations that will increase heating

efficiency, especially in homesthat are heated electrically, dueto recent increases in electricitycosts.Vaughan acknowledged that

the price of quality renovationscan be significant, but Ecowestmakes the decision easier byoffering their clients excellent fi-nancing options. We have the lowest financing

rates available through TD Fi-nancing, he said, with deferraloptions for up to a year, with nointerest.Energy-efficient renovations are

a key part of Ecowests business, and Vaughan said they makesense from both a financial andenvironmental standpoint. As an eco-friendly company,

our goal is to reduce emissionsand help customers save on util-ity costs, he said.More tightly sealed windows and

doors can substantially reduceenergy bills as well as emissions,as can furnace and ventilation

    improvements.Vaughan said that many envi-

ronmentally-friendly renovationscan pay for themselves in ener-gy savings within a decade, andthey also tend to boost a homesre-sale value. Most people renovate to update

the look of their home, as well asto improve the energy savings,he added. All those factors addto the value of the home. The company tries to live the

green message as well. One ofits key efforts is disposing ofbuilding materials in an ecolog-ically-friendly manner. We recycle everything we

can, Vaughan said. Buildingmaterials equal some of the big-gest amounts of waste that gointo landfills, so we try to reducethe amount of waste on our jobswhere possible.Ecowest also focuses on using

quality materials in its renova-tions, which last longer, requireless maintenance, and further

boost energy efficiency. The quality of our products is

much higher than the industrystandard requires, Vaughan at-tested. There is definitely valuefor the cost in durability, func-tionality and aesthetics.Ecowest is currently doing some

renovating of their own theirnew office space and showroomis scheduled to open in PortCoquitlam this spring. The big-ger space will showcase roofing, siding, fireplaces, decks, and ofcourse, windows and doors.People really appreciate being

able to see and touch the prod-ucts before choosing what theyhave installed in their home,he adds. Plus, coming in to ourshowroom gives our customers achance to get to know us as acompany, so they can meet thepeople they will be working withthroughout the renovation proj-ect on their home.

    5 consumer tips

    1. Buy quality pieces in

    classic styles that you

    can enjoy for years.

    2. Buy sofas and larger

    furniture pieces in

    neutral colours, thenupdate with acces-

    sories.

    3. Dont assume that

    local stores dont

    offer good value.

    4. Consider reclaimed

    timber furniture as a

way of doing your partto help the environ-

    ment.

    5. Look for a store that

    provides exceptional

    service during andafter your purchase.

Homestead Furniture is home to BCs largestshowroom for reclaimed timber furniture

Holding an Allen key in your handand facing a stack of boxes, youmight start regretting purchasingyour furniture at another store. And you may regret that purchaseeven more if the pieces start fall-ing apart in a year or two, said RobCernovec, owner of HomesteadFurniture in Pitt Meadows.Nothing beats the quality of

real wood, and its something youwont later regret buying, Cer-novec said.Almost everything we sell here

is 100 per cent solid and fullyassembled. Theres no plywood,no particleboard and no veneers. And thats good.

Many local residents might not beaware that Homestead Furniture, located just west of Meadow ValeMall in Pitt Meadows, is B.C.slargest showroom of reclaimedtimber furniture. Thats not theonly surprise, Cernovec said.People who walk through our

door are always amazed at howmuch space we have, and at our

selection and prices. Its largerthan people think when they driveby.Homesteads expanding line of

reclaimed furniture features ev-erything from dining room sets todesks, china cabinets and bed-room pieces, all built from 100-150 year-old reclaimed timberfrom Europe and Asia. The most recent addition is the

Post and Rail collection. Thepieces are built and assembledwith the type of quality craftsman-ship thats becoming rare, suchas dovetailing, tongue and groove

joints, post and rail joints, hand-made hardware, corner blocks

and solid wood strip drawer bot-toms. The seasoned Baltic pine, which still features the originalnail marks, is available in severaldifferent hand-rubbed finishes tosuit your decor. The attention to detail is amaz-

ing. These pieces have character they look like real antique piec-es, and theyre 100 per cent solid

wood, too, Cernovec said.In the furniture business for 19

years, Cernovec sees reclaimedtimber furniture as a way to achievea balance between peoples de-sires to furnish their homes withquality pieces and also do theirpart to help the environment.Instead of cutting down trees,

this furniture reuses old wood essentially, it recycles the wood,he said. Its very eco-friendly,and even the packaging is muchless than what you usually see.Theres hardly any Styrofoam, ifany at all.In addition, it wont end up in a

landfill within a few years. Most

pieces come fully factory assem-bled, including handles alreadyinstalled. Real wooden furnituremight initially cost more than aparticleboard piece you put to-gether yourself, but not as muchas people might think, Cernovecsaid. Were very competitive with our

pricing even with the bigger box

stores. Plus, our furniture is goingto last, he said. When peopleare looking for furniture, they tendto go out of town, thinking theyregoing to get a better deal on Unit-ed Boulevard in Coquitlam. Butthey can get the same, or better, products and value in our storefor less. And as far as reclaimedtimber furniture goes, its new, inlimited supply, and no one has abetter selection. In addition, Homestead guaran-

tees the lowest prices on every-thing they carry. They have a 30day price guarantee, so clientscan shop with confidence. Heencourages clients to come in

and be prepared for exceptionalpricing. We love the way people are

amazed when we get them greatdeals, every day of the year. Thereis no need to worry that youll missthe sale of the year. (Visit storefor details.)The latest trend in new home

    construction features a more rus-

tic or lodge style look, and thereclaimed timber furniture suitsthese homes exceptionally well. Many clients have already pur-chased several pieces from thiscollection for these homes. And they couldnt be happier.

Weve received nothing but over-whelmingly positive feedback.Come in and shop in peace. Thefriendly staff doesnt work oncommission and will not followyou around or pressure you.Ive heard that all too often.

Cernovec said his experiencein the furniture industry meanshe knows about quality, and heknows about service. We have

exceptional service, and sinceweve opened our doors in June2003, weve had no complaintsregistered at the Better BusinessBureau. We make sure every cus-tomer is happy when they leave and after they leave.

    These were top-quality instru-

ments when I was going to

school, and continue to live up

    to their reputations.

    G & G Music also offers online

son says.He personally tunes and re-

pairs pianos and has over 30

    years of experience doing so.

    als, karaoke rentals and DJ

    5 consumer tips

    1. Determine your bud-

    get. Having a price

range in mind willhelp a salesperson

    narrow down your

    affordable options

    2. Determine your

    needs. How many

people will be usingthe vehicle? Will it be

    used for city-driving,

    or long trips, or both?

    3. Once youve narrowed

    down your criteria,

present it to yourdealer and ask them

    for several options be-

    fore you start looking.

    4. Dont feel pressured.

    If a salesperson wont

listen to you and triesto tell you what to buy,

    find another salesper-

    son or dealership.

    5. Find out beforehand

    what service plan and

    warranty comes withyour vehicle.

Customers comes fi rst at Maple Ridge ChryslerThe online showroom is be-

coming just about as impor-tant as the conventional one atMaple Ridge Chrysler. The venerable new and used

auto dealership established adepartment about six monthsago that is strictly dedicated todealing with the ever-increas-ing numbers of vehicle ordersand financing requests comingthrough the companys website,www.mapleridgechrysler.com.The way we run our business

Visitorscan search and sort the vehi-cles using a number of criteria-- including price range, kilo-metres driven, model year andmore -- and for used vehiclescan even request a free Car-Proof report on the vehicleshistory. And if they find something

they like, they can make anoffer, get a trade-in appraisal, apply for financing, or at leastschedule a test drive -- all whilesitting at their computer.People are actually buying

their cars online more andmore, Speckman said. Itspretty cool, actually.

This embrace of technol-ogy would have seemed far-off indeed when Maple RidgeChrysler was first establishedin the community in 1934,more than 75 years ago. Thebusiness has grown dramati-cally over that time -- over thepast 25 years alone it has in-creased sales from about 60 to70 vehicles a month to morethan 250, and now employs130 people. The dealership, part of the

AutoCanada group, has alsorecently added Fiat to its listof new vehicle brands, whichin addition to Chryslers alsoinclude Jeep, Dodge, Nissan,Infiniti, Hyundai, Mitsubishiand Subaru models. Its first Fiat model is th
