Evening is being Co-sponsored by The Community of the Good Shepherd

& Catholic Charities of Southwestern Ohio

Engage migrants in a meaningful way Su Casa Hispanic Center, a program of Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio, and Good Shepherd would like to welcome you to an informative session and interact with staff members, who are directly helping migrants and refugees in our community. The people providing services will share stories of those who have received Emergency Services. Each person’s story is unique, and Su Casa caseworkers confront these issues daily. Learn more about Su Casa’s life-saving mission. Join us in offering hope and solidarity to vulnerable children, families, and mothers. Questions? Contact Deacon Mark Westendorf,

Coordinator of Outreach Ministries, at (513) 489-8815 ext. 714 or e-mail

[email protected] We look forward to seeing you because

you are no stranger to us.

State of the Parish Financial Presentation Members of the Finance Commission will give a brief State of the Parish presentation at all Masses the weekend of September 28/29. The purpose of this report is to highlight the many successes we’ve had over the years, share the financial results of last fiscal year, and to take a brief look to the future. Our Director of Stewardship, Teri Cunningham, along with a member from the Commission, will be available after Mass at Activity Center B to answer any questions you may have regarding the finances of the parish. Copies of the detailed written report were mailed to each registered household. If you did not receive a copy, please stop by Activity Center B where extra copies will be available.

Bishop Barron Book – Letter to a Suffering Church Recently, a copy of Bishop Barron’s book entitled Letter to a Suffering Church was mailed to all registered households. Bishop Barron calls the book “a cry from the heart.” He wrote the book for fellow Catholics who are angry and saddened over the sexual abuse in the Church and how it’s been handled. In the end, he encourages us to “stay and fight” for ourselves, our families, and most importantly, for those who have suffered abuse. A letter from Fr. Tom was included in the mailing. Several parishioners have requested extra books to send to family and friends. We are currently selling them in the parish office for $1.00. The books are available in English and Spanish. Please feel free to stop by the office to purchase your additional book(s).

Scripture for Next Week—Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time by Deacon Max Schellman

Help Needed on Friday Mornings If you have some extra time on Friday mornings, we would appreciate some help with light cleaning and dusting around the altar. Please contact Steve Lindner at the number above for more information and/or to volunteer.

Changes to the Distribution of Holy Communion for Those

Who Cannot Come Forward If you are a handicapped or an elderly person who cannot come forward to receive Communion, please let an usher know before Mass begins. Our new procedure allows a designated distributor to come down from the altar first to bring the Body of Christ to you. Please let the usher know if you would like to receive both the Body and Blood of Christ. A distributor will bring you the Body of Christ first and when the Blood of Christ is distributed in your area, someone will give you the Blood of Christ. Another change in the distribution of Holy Communion is noticed on the right side of the church when you enter from the main entrance to the church. We now have two sections of chairs instead of four. (These are the chairs directly in front of the Cry Room.) This is due to the new procedures for distribution of Communion.

Help is Needed at the Sunday, 4:00 p.m. Mass Communion Distributors, Gift Families, Servers, Head Distributors and Sacristans

We are looking for individuals, men, women, or teens, to serve as a Communion Distributor, Gift Family, Server, Head Dis-tributor and Sacristan at the 4:00 p.m. Sunday Mass. Without your help, it will be difficult to continue with this Mass. You would be trained at a time that best fits your schedule. If you are interested in joining one or more of these ministries, please contact Steve Lindner (see contact information above).

Are you interested in singing in our Adult Choir? The Good Shepherd Adult Choir will be starting the new season on Tuesday, September 10. We are looking for those in our assembly who have an interest in choral singing and would like to share their talents in this exciting ministry. The Adult Choir is open to parishioners of high school age and over. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings in Room 27 from 7:30-9:00 p.m. The group assists at the 9:00 Mass on Sunday mornings and also participates in other seasonal liturgies throughout the year. Questions? Contact Doug Schmutte, Music Director.

First Reading—Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14: The passage from Exodus shows the intimate relationship Moses has with God. Moses pleads with God to save his people from God’s wrath. God is angry because they’ve abandoned him for idols. Moses reminds God how he freed the people and brought them out of Egypt and slavery. He also reminds God of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Israel (Jacob). After listening to Moses, God has mercy on the people and relents, giving them another chance. Second Reading—1 Timothy 1:12-17: Paul expresses his gratitude for God’s goodness. He recounts his voyage from persecutor to faith-filled zealot for Christ. Paul confesses that he is the “foremost” of sinners. He says God has made him an example for others. If Paul can be saved by believing in the Lord, so can each of us. Paul’s change of heart shows God’s mercy and patience with sinners. Gospel—Luke 15:1-32: The Pharisees and scribes complain that Jesus keeps company with outcasts. Jesus responds by telling three parables about loss and recovery. The parable of the man who finds his lost sheep shows the extent to which God will go to save just one who is lost. The parable of the woman who lost a coin also shows God’s joy when what is lost is found. God’s openness to sinners is shown by the familiar Parable of the Prodigal Son. The younger son separates from his father, sees the folly of his decision and returns and restores his relationship with his father. As all celebrate his return, the older brother becomes jealous and the father reassures him that he loves them both. When we separate from God, he is anxious for our return.

Good Shepherd’s Handbell Choir

begins its season this Wednesday, September 11

We always welcome additional members including high school students as well as adults. Music reading skills are very helpful, but previous experience in handbell ringing is not necessary. Through some instructional time, the basics of handbell ringing can be mastered. People who have played instruments, or who have sung in choirs, can easily adapt their skills to handbells. Rehearsals are on Wednesday eve-nings from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Room 27. Questions? Contact Doug Schmutte, Music Director.

Stewardship

Welcoming Shepherds Needed The Welcoming Shepherd Ministry, which began over 30 years ago, is seeking additional members to help continue the spirit of welcom-ing within the parish community.

On the weekend of October 5/6, at Activity Center B, the Whitley City Ministry will be collecting both new and gently used toys, games, puzzles, etc. after all Masses. You may also bring items to the “Take It or Leave It” Room, across from the parish office, during the following week. Our main focus is for the age group of infant to 12 years of age. We ask that all puzzles, games and board games be complete and that boxes be taped so that we don’t lose parts. Some suggestions follow, but not limited to the following: 6-12 months—musical toys, crinkle toys, stuffed toys, stacking toys, nesting toys, g iant Lego bricks, bounce toys; 12-24 months—blocks, wagons, pull toys, large wooden peg puzzles; 3-9 years—trucks, cars, anything with wheels, crafts, dolls, jewelry making kits, kitchen play sets, puzzles, and games. I t e m s f o r o l d e r c h i l d r e n — a s a p p r o p r i a t e . If you wish to donate newborn/infant clothing, we ask that it be new and/or gently used and cleaned. This collection will help deliver Christmas gifts to children through-out McCreary County, Kentucky that otherwise may not get a visit from Santa. Gifts are distributed at a large Christmas party sponsored by the Good Shepherd Chapel of Whitley City with whom we work with routinely. Last year they provided gifts for nearly 350 children. If you would like to assist with the collection before any Mass the weekend of October 5/6, or if you have questions, please call Tom Kilgore at 779-9220 or e-mail Tom at [email protected].

No reservations are needed for this free service. Sign-up sheets are available before the sessions—first come, first served. You must be present to sign in. All are welcome—parishioners and non-parishioners. Next month, the healing sessions are on the second Monday of the month, October 14. We also have individual healing sessions for parishioners in need—for example, surgery, cancer therapy or in the hospital. Contact Theresa Kajs (513-706-6398 or [email protected]) for healing requests or joining the ministry. More information is on the Good Shepherd web page: www.good-shepherd.org/ministries/healing-christ-ministry. Our healing ministry equally invites those who are ill and those who seek wellness.

Make a new friend, change a life forever

You can change a child’s life forever through the gift of sponsor-ship with UNBOUND. UNBOUND.ORG is an international Catholic nonprofit that pairs sponsors with families of children and elders living in poverty in 20 countries. Founded by people of faith acting on the Gospel call to serve the poor, UNBOUND connects people in need with people who care. There will be an UNBOUND Ambassador sharing this deeply rewarding sponsorship opportunity with a child or elder after the Masses next weekend, September 14/15. We encourage you to stop by Activity Center A next weekend to learn more about what a genuine blessing it is to share with a new UNBOUND friend the gift of hope for a better life. Questions? Please contact Good Shepherd parishioners James and Marianne Heileman at 513 -531-7336 or e-mail [email protected].

This volunteer opportunity is open to individuals or couples. Responsibilities include: Registering new families after Mass. Calling the new families in approximately four weeks as a follow up. Assisting parishioners with information about our ministries and programs. Volunteers stay after Mass for 10-15 minutes to register new parishioners in the parish. All you need is a smile to help out in this ministry. Training is provided. Call Teri Cunningham in the parish office at 489-8815 ext. 738 or e-mail [email protected]. Please consider joining our team to continue the welcoming spirit of Good Shepherd!

Need to Know

Decree on Child Protection The Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s Decree on Child Protection is our way of protecting all of the vulnerable individuals in our community. If you suspect that someone is being abused, please contact the Coordinator of Ministry to Survivors of Abuse at the Archdiocese at 513-263-6623 as well as local law enforcement. In Hamilton County, you can contact Child Protective Services at 513-241-KIDS (5437). To Report Financial Misconduct If you suspect the misuse or misconduct of Church finances, you may call the EthicsPoint hotline at 1-888-389-0381 or see the Archdiocese website (www.catholiccincinnati.org) under Ministries & Offices, Finance and click the link “To Report Financial Misconduct.” You will be taken to a secure site to file your report.

For confidential information concerning annulments, please call Fr. Jack Wehman (ext. 748) or Emily Weierman (ext. 726) at 513-489-8815.

Welcoming We warmly welcome our new parishioners and guests who are joining us today. If you are interested in learning more about Good Shepherd, or would like to register as an official member of the parish, please stop by the Welcome Desk located in our main foyer. A member of our Welcoming Ministry will be honored to assist you.

Baptism Infant Baptisms are celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Please register for Baptism by calling Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761 or e-mail: [email protected]). Before the Baptism, parents need to attend a session to explore the meaning of Baptism. Sessions are held on the first Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

Adult Initiation Into the Church Adults and children (7 years of age or older) who wish to become Catholics are invited to call Emily Weierman, (513-489-8815 ext. 726 or e-mail [email protected]).

First Eucharist (First Communion) First Eucharist (First Communion) is celebrated on two occasions in early spring. Parents are invited to call Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761). Children are invited to the Sacrament when they are in the second grade or have reached the age of 7. Children receiving First Eucharist (First Communion) need to be prepared to receive First Reconciliation (Confession). Preparation for First Reconciliation (Confession) begins early fall each year.

Confirmation for Youth Confirmation is celebrated in the spring each year for youth who have not yet received the Sacrament. Confirmation Prepa-ration takes place within the 8th grade Faith Formation curriculum. Classes run September through April for next year’s candidates. Please contact Walter Plummer with any questions (513-489-8815 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Marriage Marriages are celebrated throughout the year with exceptions made for Christmas holidays and the season of Lent. Please contact Steve Lindner for information (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]). Preparation for marriage begins eight months before the Sacrament is celebrated. For preparations, call Steve Lindner (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Pastoral Care of the Sick Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick can be offered when someone is seriously ill, requires surgery, or if the same illness or condition becomes more serious. Each week on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m., the anointing is offered within Mass (in the chapel). Please notify Deacon Dennis Berry (513-489-8815, ext. 708, or e-mail: [email protected]) in advance of your need. Our parish priests also come to the sick person at home, in the hospital, or at Hospice.

Ministry to the Dying: Anointing and/or Viaticum If a person is near death, he or she may be anointed. However, if the dying person is able to swallow, it is recommended that they receive the Eucharist as Viaticum. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick ought to be celebrated at the beginning of an illness. Viaticum is to be celebrated when death is close. The Eucharist, given as Viaticum, is food for the passage through death to eternal life. A priest or a deacon may give Viaticum to the dying person. When a priest is unavailable, it is important that the deacon visit the dying to pray with that person and the family and offer Viaticum. Please call the parish office (489-8815). After hours, please leave a message about the location of the dying person and your contact phone number. That message will be relayed to a priest or deacon.

Reconciliation (Confessions) Tuesdays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room in the church. Those attending the Sacrament can enter through the doors to the church, prepare in the church and enter the Reconciliation Room when they see the priest is not occupied with another penitent.

Vocations Single men or women interested in answering the call to Priesthood or Religious Life are encouraged to contact the pastor or the Diocesan Vocations Director at 513-421-3131.
