Manchester Montessori School

Parents to set up new school

A group of Manchester parents are working to set up a Montessori primary school under the Government’s Free School initiative.

The group in South Manchester wants to establish the school to meet demand for school places in the area and to offer an alternative to current mainstream education.

They believe that the school, which will be called Manchester Montessori School, will offer all local children, regardless of ability or income, the chance to benefit from a Montessori education.

Why Montessori? The Montessori method, which was founded by Italian doctor Maria Montessori in 1907, aims

to foster children’s independent thinking by allowing them to develop at their own pace. There is little whole-class teaching. Instead, pupils are given freedom to choose topics that interest them, fostering a love of learning.

New SchoolNow the parents behind the prospective school are looking for support from other parents and interested parties in the area to move forward with their application.

Dominique Brockhaus-Grand, one of the parents, says that the group feels strongly that all children could benefit from the Montessori system, and that they are passionate that this be available to children in the area.

“The Free School will be state

funded and open to all children, irrespective of economic background.

“At this stage, we need people to express their support. We need to hear from people who feel our community and children would benefit if such a school was available locally and without fees”.

The group have set up a website where you can register your support, find out more about the project and Montessori education and fill in their online survey.

Express Your SupportParent Annabel Newfield says “We need to show that parents and the wider community are interested in the new school.

“You don’t have be involved in the process” she says, “but we do

Page 7: Community Index Chorlton Feb 2011

to advertise call Lesley: 0787 589 5604 [email protected]

need many people to show their support by filling in our interest form online.”

Spread the WordThere are numerous other ways of supporting the group’s application: “This could mean anything from lending website skills to simply spreading the word.”

About MontessoriMaria Montessori observed that children under six absorb limitlessly and effortlessly from the world around them and in so doing lay down all the foundations for later life. They have a special kind of mind that she called an absorbent mind - a strong desire to explore everything around them using their senses and a drive to become independent.

She identified certain windows of opportunity for the child that she called ‘sensitive periods’ during which the child is irresistibly drawn to the things he or she needs to help them develop their full human potential.

In a Montessori school you will find independent children who are encouraged not only to do things for themselves but also to think for themselves. You

will find children who have learnt how to explore and solve problems for themselves. Most importantly you will see small children who are often perceived as only being aware of their own needs helping each other and who, without being asked to, will put things away and perform acts of kindness purely to benefit the group as a whole.

The Winter Ghosts by Kate MosseFor fans of Kate Mosse this novella condenses all of her best qualities into a much shorter offering than usual. Set in the winter of 1928 we follow Freddie who is still grieving for his brother who died in the Great War. Despite years of therapy, Freddie is unable to move past his brother’s death, often leaving him detached from those around him. This reclusive nature has led him to taking a tour of the Pyrenees just as the worst of winter is about to take hold. Driving along a lonely mountain road Freddie loses control of his car and knocks himself unconscious. This sets in motion a haunting series of events which keeps the reader gripped.

Kate Mosse once again bases her story around historical fact. Although an obvious ghost story, she cleverly creates the eerie atmosphere using the scenery and the harsh mountain weather. This full length story has been expanded from “The Cave” written for the “Short Reads” campaign, which is included at the back of the book. A perfect read for a cold winter’s afternoon.

Electric Eden: Unearthing England’s Visionary MusicRob YoungUK folk music has been back in vogue recently, and this hefty tome surveys the whole history of the form. Young pays particular attention to the folk boom of the Sixties and Seventies, lavishing entire chapters on key bands such as Pentangle and Fairport Convention. But first he puts this era in context, explaining the early work done to preserve the folk tradition by Cecil Sharp, Ewan MacColl and A.L. Lloyd. Following the lineage right up to the present day, with folk-inflected artists like Kate Bush and Julian Cope, Young paints a detailed portrait of an entire swathe of popular culture, slotting in lesser-known artists along the way. Admirably he manages to do so in a shrewd, highly readable fashion, never getting bogged down in dry academic-style prose. If there’s a place for Comus in your record collection, or the voice of Vashti Bunyan brings a tear to your eye, you’d do well to treat yourself to this.

The Electric Michelangelo - Sarah HallThe Electric Michelangelo is a sensuously gritty novel of love, loss and outsiders, set around the art of tattooing in the beginning of the last century. Opening within blustery Morecambe Bay, we follow Cy Parks as he becomes part of the tattooing world under the harsh yet insightful eye of binge-drinking Eliot Riley. Delve deep into the underworld of the vintage tattoo parlour as Cy’s life is turned upside down, leading him to America where he meets a host of outcasts from the local circus. Amongst them, the enigmatic and beautifully fierce Grace catches his eye, and after an unusual artistic request, Cas, the Electric Michelangelo, finds his life sets a new path once again...

Sarah Hall creates rich, artistic prose and a powerful perception on life in this novel that was shortlisted for the 2004 Man Booker Prize.

Tagpassiton is a new, bright, exciting and rapidly evolving network of Community Loyalty Schemes linked by one card, with Independent traders at their core.

The Chorlton independents, listed on page 14, have generously created their own special loyalty offers for the scheme and merged them together for all cardholders to enjoy; the DidsburyTagpassiton Community Loyalty Scheme was created in exactly the same way.

This means that Tagpassiton cardholders can use this ever expanding, innovative network of independent businesses to access a huge and growing range of exclusive discounts and

special offers locally and further afield. Currently, there are Tagpassiton schemes running in Chorlton, Didsbury, The Heatons, Levenshulme, Cheadle and even in Durham in the North East. And the scheme is growing ever wider! More and more businesses are joining Tagpassiton, as awareness of the scheme is spreading and the network grows.

Community Loyalty Scheme Tagpassiton has been designed so that local charities and community groups such as Parent Teacher’s Associations, churches, social movements and clubs can benefit. Every £5 card bought from a charity or community group raises £2.50

for their cause. We are looking for lots of different groups to get involved and tell their members and supporters about the scheme and raise funds this way. If you are interested in being involved, please contact us.

Why?No matter what you are trying to buy there will be an independent business providing it, often with more bang for less buck. Let’s act with our wallets and purses and use the Tagpassiton network as a way to increase our awareness of independents and support them. It’s a small step to a vibrant, better High Street.

Each of our independent businesses offers something unique and together they offer an antidote to the ‘McHigh Street’. With local independents there is more knowledge, interest and passion. There will be someone interesting there to discuss ‘where and how’ products are sourced. Generally, they are transparent and careful in choosing suppliers to source goods locally, and fair with their own local suppliers when negotiating a good deal for customers. This all helps to sustain a thriving local community.

How do I recognise Tagpassiton traders? All the independent businesses taking part in the Tagpassiton scheme will display our distinctive, colourful hand logo. You will see it on their shop windows, their websites and promotional materials. In many places there is also a Tagpassiton poster on display clearly stating their particular offer to you. Some offers may change frequently to provide you with greater variety, especially food outlets. Look out for the ‘This week’s Special Offer to Tag Cardholders’ posters.

All of the participating traders and their particular offers can be found at www.tagpassiton.com.

How can I join in? Simply buy your card from Scheme businesses kindly helping to promote the scheme or from us if you wish to order online. To then claim your discounts and offers, simply show your card before payment. No data trail of your spending habits is created. Take the time to register your card and we can keep you up to date with new additions and special offers. As a bonus registered cardholders have the opportunity to earn money extending the scheme and

are entered into regular prize draws. See www.tagpassiton.com for details.

We are always on the lookout for new ideas and links to help further our scheme. If you like what we are trying to do and want to help, please get in touch as we are hoping to form teams of volunteer ambassadors to help with scheme initiatives.

South Manchester has a vibrant independent business community; friendly, creative, inter-generational, hard working and fun. They are working together to encourage us to consider the community balance when we spend and giving us the opportunity to save a huge

amount of money. Having set the ball rolling the independent community invites you to join in.

If you’re environmentally aware, chances are you already recycle, avoid tumble drying like the plague, shower instead of taking baths, and use low-energy light bulbs. By taking these easy steps - combined with driving sensibly, if at all - we each stop the production of just under a tonne of global warming gases every single year.

But is that enough? What if we want to do even more?

One of the most effective ways of cutting carbon emissions is by considering the food on your plate. The Food Climate Research Network reckons cutting our food-related emissions by 70% by 2050 would make a real difference to the environment.

For ideas on how you can make real food carbon savings, check out our handy barometer, below.

1. Reduce meat and dairy consumptionCut both out completely and you can halve your food carbon footprint. As long as you get the dietary balance right, there’s research to suggest that your health and life expectancy will soar, too! (Saving: 1.2 tonnes of CO2-equivalent gases)

2. Buy organically-produced local food where possible and watch a quarter more carbon drop off the scales. While the fruit and veg might not win first prize in a beauty contest, there’s no

doubt that it is tastier and better for the planet. Producers use less fossil fuels, no synthetic chemicals obtained from oil, and they help the soil to store CO2 instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. To maximise freshness, chop and freeze on purchase and add to stir-fries, soups, stews or smoothies. (Saving: 0.5 tonnes of CO2-e)

3. Recycle, recyle, recycleand avoid packaged foods. Reducing waste by just half a large bag each week saves half a tonne of CO2 per year. Large supermarkets such as Morrisons in Chorlton accept Tetra packs. And these days you can even compost for the Council from the comfort of your own kitchen! Keep it whiff-free by ordering a free indoor food-composting caddy from the Council on 0161 954 9000. (Saving: 0.47 tonnes CO2-e)

4. Cut down on meals out such as takeaways. It’s good for your waistline, good for your wallet, and will knock another tenth off your carbon footprint. (Saving: 0.10 tonnes CO2-e)

The good news is that you’re not fighting climate change alone. Most Didsbury residents that we surveyed (80%) already have one or more

meat-free days each week; 65% actively avoid buying packaged foods; and 52% compost food waste/biodegradable packaging. Why not join the growing trend?

For more tips, follow Didsbury Dinners on Facebook or email [email protected].

You can also pre-order a set of handy postcards on food sustainability, and your very own copy of Didsbury Dinners: The Low-Carbon Community Cookbook (publishing Spring 2011).
