You tell us – it’s your area, it’s your news...

In December, a number of localchildren from Radford Primary hadthe fantastic opportunity to go on atrip to London. Councillorsfrom Radford and Park wanted tosupport local school children to raisetheir aspirations through anopportunity that not all mayexperience.

The trip includedsightseeing many areasof our capital including, the Tower of London,Houses of Parliament,Downing Street, and ofcourse BuckinghamPalace.

One of the highlights wasa visit to the NaturalHistory Museum. Itbrought learning to lifeand the children wereencouraged to exploreand interact with themany learning games onoffer. They put intopractice the theoreticalwork they were doing atschool on Victoriansand Tudors.

Since returning, the trip has hada positiveimpact, theyhave become moreindependent and feel moreconfident in making theirown choices.

Here is a quote from Lewis inYear 5: “We went past BigBen and it was fantastic. Wewent to Buckingham Palace

and before that we went to DowningStreet, that's where the PrimeMinister lives.”

Many parents and carers havecongratulated the school and localcouncillors; they were so pleased thattheir children have had the opportunityto see the capital and the historyof London.

The aim of the session was to offeradvice and practical tips to chefsfrom takeaway outlets on how toprepare takeaway meals morehealthily, by reducing the amounts offat, sugar and salt they use, whilststill retaining their enjoyable taste. They were also encouraged toconsider using more vegetables andfruit in their dishes.

Eight chefs and kitchen staffattended and found it be usefuland informative.

Another session is planned inFebruary with the possibility of rollingthe programme out across the city inthe future.

In 2008, Nottingham DevelopmentCompany ran the Peoples Choiceprogramme. By January 2009, TheVine Community Centre's 'ParentPower' won the funding and startedoffering free classes with crèchefacilities to local parents, who wetreable to gain skills and experience inmany fields such as; hairdressing, sewing, world cooking, beauty andmany more. It has planning permission forapartments, which are unlikely to ever bebuilt. It is a magnet for dumping and theywant the owner of the land to be more

responsible with the building and theland. They are hoping to encouragedemolition of the site as a first site. Thereare only very few council powers to getthis site sorted, so they really need towork with the owner based in London. Ifany residents have a view about thisbuilding, please let them know.Schools Funded to go to LondonKatrina Bull, Mohammad Afzal haverecently recommended funding for oneclass from Radford Primary and one fromMellers Primary school to go to Londonfor an overnight stay. They felt that manychildren in Radford might not get theopportunity to visit London normally andget to museums or the theatre downthere. Hopefully the wonderful memoriesof their trip will stay with them forever.

Councillor Marshall has been keeping aneye on fly-tipping, especially in shoppers'car parks in the Hyson Green area. Oncereported, the Council manages to clearthem, but a few days later he finds thatsomeone else has dumped their rubbishthere. Councillor Marshall knows that thisis frustrating, and he urges residents tocontact him at his regular surgeries if theyspot any fly-tipping in theirneighbourhoods. He is keen to tackle thisproblem with residents in an effort toimprove the state of the City.

Not In My Neighbourhood WeekThis mini week of action took place during thefirst week of November last year. TheArboretum ward was identified as a key areato have this targeted action by localCouncillors, the Crime and Drugs partnership,The Police, and local residents.A small geographical area was identified for action:Bentinck Road; Birkin Avenue; Radford Road; andall side streets down Gregory Boulevard. Arboretum Councillor Merlita Bryan wanted togive some feedback on the activities that tookplace: • The Crime Reduction Team ran a stall at

The Mary Potter Centre in order to raisepublic awareness of their service

• Smart Water, the anti-theft measure, delivered to over 30 homes during the week

• Community Police Officers made sure binswere taken off the street

• Alleys were cleared and litter picked byCity Services

• The Dog Warden worked hard to reducemess locally

• The Community Pay Back Scheme paintedand filled the planters at Bentinck School

• Street Drinking was strictly enforced in theAlcohol Free Zone, whilst a number of shopswere visited on Radford Road by the police tostop the sale of alcohol to drunk individuals

Thanks must go to Neighbourhood ActionOfficer Linda Wright who ensured that keyresident groups in the area, voluntary groupsand Bentinck School were aware of theactivities that were being provided for theweek to allow them to participate.Merlita thinks that this week showed howmuch can be achieved when local residents, the City Council, The Police and other groupswork together.

Berridge Ward Councilors, HassanAhmed, Mohammed Ibrahim and CaroleJones are looking forward to the openingof 2 new facilities in the Ward this Spring.

The Leisure Centre on the site of theDjanogly Academy, Gregory Boulevard,is due to open on schedule inMarch/April.

This will replace the old Noel St Baths, which has served the area for over 80years. Facilities will include a swimming

pool, steam room, sauna, dance studio, and state of the art Gym. Rooms will alsobe available to hire out to communitygroups. Opening hours will be largelyunchanged, and secure parking will beavailable on site.

We anticipate that usage of the centrewill be high, and urge everyone to goalong and give the new facilities a try.

Work began in January on a 70,000pound face lift of Chard Street Park in

New Basford. Funding came fromPathfinder, Nottingham City Council AreaCapital Fund and WRENN.

The old park was not being used due toSafety concerns and the facility wasbadly needed in the area. Consultationstook place with local schools andresidents in the planning stages and ishoped that when work is completed(hopefully by the Spring), that children inthe area will enjoy these new facilities.
