RESIDENTS VOICE FULLERTON COURT
33 JANUARY 2018
THE CHAIRMAN REPORTS
John Blackwell
Udney Park Playing Fields: My current understanding is that the Inspector’s
Report regarding any Local Plan Modifications, did not question the designation of
the Playing fields as a Local Green Space, despite representation to do so from
Quantum. These modifications are up for Consultation until late February and the
Local Elections are due in May, so it is considered doubtful that any Planning
application will be forthcoming until the early summer. I think it is worth repeating
that the Friends of Udney Park Playing Fields are still very active in expanding their
proposals for the Udney Park Playing Fields Trust, see the FUPPF Newsletter 29,
published earlier this month. I have some spare copies.
Fullerton Walkers: On a fine cold morning this month, we drove to Pen Ponds Car
Park and then walked along the drive to White Lodge,
which now houses the Royal Ballet Lower School. A
steady walk up Queens Ride and skirting Sidmouth
Wood, we arrived at Pembroke Lodge for a well-earned
lunch. We then took a more direct route back to Pen
Ponds and a slow uphill climb back to the cars,
completing what was generally considered to be a good
morning’s effort.
Gardens & Grounds: Our new waterfall Lights appear
to have general approval and considered to fit in well with the efforts of the Udney
Park Road Community. The main Gates have now been fixed, and quotations are
being obtained for surfacing work to be done on the main drive and a car park
pothole. The white cyclamen and grasses in the blue pot by the front door, will
hopefully enhance the friendly and welcoming nature of our Court. Our warm
thanks to Greene Gardens for their continual efforts to keep the gardens up to
standard.
Generally: On your behalf, I extend a very warm welcome to Louise Humphries,
who has moved into Flat 38. Finally, may I wish you all, a year of Happiness, Peace
and Good Health.
MORNING AND AFTERNOON TEA AND COFFEE
Fullerton Court would like to remind all Owners we provide Morning Coffee at
11.00am and Afternoon Tea at 4.00pm every day. It would be so nice to see more
owners using the facilities of the lounge. Lin Sutcliffe
Why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke?
Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the
counters?
Why do we leave cars worth thousands of pounds in our driveways and put
our useless junk in the garage?
Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?
Why can't women put on mascara with their mouth closed?
Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?
Why is 'abbreviated' such a long word?
Why is it that doctors and lawyers call what they do 'practice'?
Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavouring, and dish washing
liquid made with real lemons?
Why is the man who invests all of your money called a broker?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
Why isn't there mouse-flavoured cat food?
Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?
You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why
don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff??
Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?
UNIVERSITY OF THIRD AGE HISTORY GROUP
The Group met for lunch at Fullerton Court, courtesy of the management, on
Tuesday, 12th December. Eleven people attended. We adjourned after lunch to the
Hobbies Room to take up the usual fortnightly meeting. On this occasion there was
no specific subject. Instead, we had a lively discussion on a variety of topics
presented by a number of members.
The next meeting of the Group will take place in the Hobbies Room on Tuesday
9th January at 2pm, when the subject will be a ‘History of Nuns’.
Owners are welcome to come. Bill Small
THE INVASION 1940 – WHAT IF?
Tony Eaton
Tony Eaton returned to give an intriguing talk about the invasion ‘Operation Sea
Lion’ which was expected in June 1940. However, from files which have been released in recent
years he explained that Hitler was expecting appeasement
after destroying our Air Force, breaking civilians' spirit by
bombing cities and the Royal Family evacuated to Canada,
the plan being to restore
Edward VIII to the
throne and Prime
Minister perhaps Rab
Butler or David Lloyd
George. None of these
things happening, an invasion was later
attempted, with large barges loaded with
thousands of troops, tanks and artillery; an attempt foiled by the superior British
Navy. With many photographs and details about the Nazi plans for the war, this proved
a fascinating evening. Joyce Southern
95th BIRTHDAY ELEBRATIONS FOR STEVE STEPHENSON
On the evening of Thursday, 14th December, the Owners joined Steve and his son
Toby, who had driven down from Birmingham, to celebrate his 95th birthday with
excellent wine and a buffet meal.
HEALTH & SAFETY GUIDANCE FOR FULLERTON COURT
Fullerton Court has signed a 5-year contract with Ellis Whittam Ltd. to provide
advice and guidance on H&S and Environmental issues. This is a national company
providing guidance on employment law and H&S services to employees. The
contract offers protective support, risk assessment and provision of an action plan.
The company will act as a legally required ‘Competent Person’, offering a
consultancy service and H&S training. An annual visit and review will take place.
Setting up the contract with the aid of RSL has
reduced the annual fee.
The first survey was carried out on 31st October
2017 which resulted in H&S Policy with an
accompanying handbook, a general risk
assessment report, and a ‘Competent Person’
certificate for display in the Office. The policy
and report are legally required documents which
can be shown to any law enforcing authority. Two
policy statements have been produced and signed
by the Board chairman of Fullerton Court Ltd
covering H&S and environmental issues,
recognising day-to-day operations, a duty of care
regarding H&S and environmental issues, seeking to eliminate risks, ensuring
emergency procedures are in place, identify hazards, and set targets. There will be
regular monitoring to preserve a programmes of continuous improvement. The
statements will be reviewed annually.
The first survey undertook a general risk assessment as required by the
Management of H&S at Work Regulations, 1999, providing action to be taken to
meet legal obligations. The following areas were considered: cleaning, contract
management, electrical safety, fire safety overview, first aid, food safety, gas safety,
H&S management, Legionella bacteria, lone working and stress. Overall the
results were excellent with no situations requiring ‘immediate action’, nine
requiring ‘medium term action’ and three requiring action of ‘low priority’. Fullerton Court Board
SCHOOL CHOIR
Wednesday, 20th December 2017
The children’s choir from St Mary’s & St Peter’s CE Primary School once again
came to Fullerton Court, now an annual event, to entertain the Owners with the
singing of carols. The previous evening they had performed at the nearby St Mary
with St Alban Church. As always the afternoon proved a delightful event.

OWNERS CAROL SINGALONG
Thursday, 21st December

completed with fruit cup and light refreshments. Photos: John Bourne
BOXING DAY LUNCH
Following a delicious cold meats Boxing Day lunch, the Owners were entertained
by two friends of Bill Small, Teresa Bond on the piano, and her son Findlay on the
saxophone playing rare an unusual Christmas music.
