Communion What is Communion? The word “communion” is defined as the act of sharing, or holding in common; participation. In a biblical sense, communion is a special physical and spiritual way for believers to remember together how the Lord Jesus Christ gave His life for us. Participating in communion (sometimes called “The Lord’s Supper”) is considered a privilege for believers. It is both a somber reflection and beautiful celebration of Christ’s sacrifice for all who put their faith in Him. Taking the elements (bread to signify Christ’s body) and wine or juice (to signify Christ’s blood) is a time of repentance and thankfulness. Before taking the elements, spend time searching your heart for any unconfessed sin. Confess your sin to God, and if there is unresolved conflict in your life, seek reconciliation. Reflect on the great price Jesus paid to free you from your sin and spend time thanking and worshipping Him for the forgiveness you have been given. What do I need to do Communion at home? Communion elements consist of bread representing the body of Christ and juice to represent the blood of Christ. Bread – Historically, communion “bread” is an unleavened bread, cracker or wafer. Triscuits are an unleavened cracker generally easily found at any grocery store. Juice – Plain grape juice works well. If you prefer, you may use wine. Scripture 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Matthew 26:26-28 26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. crossroads.org
