Members & Guests

Welcome to the Summer edition of the Communicator magazine.

Once again the festive season is upon us, which means hams areon the raffles list.

Club Forster will present the $5,000 ham, toy & turkey raffles on 4th, 11th, and 18th of December, whilst at the Sporties $1,500 of ham and turkey raffles are on the 1st, 8th, and 15th, December. Also in the run-up to Christmas, and by popular request, ‘Doogs’ will be having ham draws every Saturday.

The poker machine pre-commitment continues to generate concern, with no one knowing how it will be implemented, and when. The Federal Coalition, State Government, State Opposition, and Local Government all oppose the proposed legislation. This is causing concern with forward planning at most clubs including ours.

I am extremely pleased to advise that Great Lakes Council have approved the Club’s Development Application to erect and operate a tourist facility comprising of 88 apartments, reception and pool. This is fantastic news! Discussions will be held with the Developers to clarify their future project time-table. You will continue to be kept up-to-date with any further progress.

The Sporties Tuncurry (formerly known as the Tuncurry Forster League & Sports Club) will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary from Monday 12th December, 2011 to Sunday 18th December, 2011. Members will have the opportunity to celebrate this terrific milestone with plans under way for daily gameshow bonus prize giveaways, birthday raffle, mixed bowls day plus a 30th Anniversary Dinner.

Board and Management are continuing to address at Club Forster, all Building Code of Australia capital upgrade works which should be completed by 30th June, 2012.

On a more sombre note, it is disappointing to hear of members, who never, or very rarely attend either of our clubs, making disparaging remarks on the way the club is being run. They have never had the decency to ask the Board or Management any questions to get the CORRECT answers. If anyone wants to know the FACTS, see any Board member or contact our General Manager Peter Clarke.

I hope to see you at either Club Forster or Sporties Tuncurry.

Finally, on behalf of Board, Management, and Staff, I wish you and yours all a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year.

ALLAN LAIRDPRESIDENT

Page 5: Communicator Summer 2011/12

The year has certainly passed by quickly and I welcome you to another edition of the Communicator.

With the warmer weather arriving it is a great time to come and enjoy with family and

friends, a terrific array of live entertainment and great food on offer at both Club Forster and Sporties Tuncurry.

Firstly, on behalf of the Board, I wish to report that the Club’s financial performance for the 4 month period to 31 October, 2011 was a satisfactory Net Loss of $68,372. This represents a significant positive trading improvement of $147,121 when compared to $215,493 last year. Revenue growth is up approximately $223,000 on 2010. Salary and wages have been well contained up around $20,000 on last year. The Club’s financial position is sound with cash reserves of $685,035 as at 31st October, 2011.

This Summer we have a great line-up of shows including IWA Wrestling fun for the whole family, the welcome return of the brilliant British 60’s Show, funnyman Col Elliott with his special brand of humour, Gina Jeffreys and Beccy Cole together in concert, and one of the most popular entertainers to ever appear at Club Forster, the great Tom Burlinson returns!

I am pleased to report that on Thursday 10th November, 2011 the Combined Inter Sports Club Social was held with around 290 members attending a thoroughly enjoyable night. Nominations were received from 26 members across 13 Inter Sports Clubs. The major sporting recipients were awarded to Corey Clarke (Sports Tennis Club) for Junior Sports Person of the Year, Barbara Smith (Club Forster Euchre Club) Club Person of the Year, and Blake Clarke (Sports Tennis Club) was recognized as the winner of the

prestigious Sports Person of the Year Award.Blake’s achievements over the past 12 months has been nothing short of outstanding. Congratulations to all nominees and worthy winners.

I am very pleased to announce, acknowledge and congratulate the winner of the ‘Billy Lambert Memorial’ Staff Member and Rookie of the Year being Narelle Kean and Amanda Campbell. Both members of staff are very dedicated, committed and friendly.Once again congratulations to both Narelle and Amanda.

Congratulations are also extended to the Forster Tuncurry Hawks and Hawkettes (Ladies League Tag) Rugby League sides for convincingly winning the Group 3 Grand Final. A terrific achievement and the Management Committee, Coaches and Players should be justly proud.

I remind all members that your membership fees are now due and payable by the 31st January, 2012 and can be paid at Club Forster’s reception desk. To reward those members who renew before 31st December, 2011, two members will have a chance to win $500 each in the early bird draw. So renew now for only $11, or 3 year membership only $30 and save $3 or 5 year membership only $45 and save $10. This is great value when you consider you receive two clubs for the price of one! Members that have renewed for 3 and 5 years membership will also automatically be entered into the Early Bird Draw.

In conclusion, I would like to wish the Board, Management, Staff and Members a Very Happy Christmas and a Safe and Prosperous New Year.

MS GILLARD, YOU PROMISED TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY. NOW WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.

Your government’s proposed gambling laws will cost our New South Wales clubs and pubs $3.59 billion in the first year alone. This means they will no longer be able to fund local community groups, charities and sporting teams.

The new laws won’t help problem gamblers but they will hurt our community.

Page 9: Communicator Summer 2011/12

The FacTs – Why Gillard’s GamblinG laWs Won’T WorkGillard & Wilkie’s gambling laws won’t help problem gamblers.

Mandatory pre-commitment requires the problem gambler, who is suffering from an addiction, to set a rational limit on their gambling expenditure.

Problem gamblers need help – not a gambling card.

Why won’t the Government conduct a trial? Recognising that mandatory pre-commitment is unproven, in 2010, the Productivity Commission advised that a trial was needed before the Government considered “proceeding with its implementation” (Recommendation 19.2).

There should be a trial to identify the unintended consequences.

Gamblers will need a licence to punt and a database will track their play.Under the Gillard – Wilkie proposal, to play any gaming machine currently operating in a NSW pub, club or casino, you will first need to hand over your personal ID and be issued with an electronic gambling ID card.

No ID card, no play.

The amount you spend will then be tracked and stored permanently, along with your personal details, on a government database.

If that isn’t a licence to punt – tracked by a database – then we don’t know what is.

Recreational gamblers won’t bother applying for a licence to punt.Recreational gamblers will be most affected by the proposed laws – they simply won’t bother applying for a licence to play, either because it is too time consuming or because of legitimate privacy concerns.

Mandatory pre-commitment has failed in Norway.Independent government funded research shows that the rate of problem gambling in Norway has increased from 1.3% to 2.1% since the removal of poker machines in 2007 and the introduction of mandatory pre-commitment technology in 2009.

Low intensity machines won’t help problem gamblers.Low intensity machines do not exist in Australia.

Low intensity machines do exist in the UK, where the rate of problem gambling is almost double the rate of problem gambling in NSW.

What the leading researchers say about Gillard’s laws.

“I don’t believe that pre-commitment is going to have its desired effects. I think it may lead to some unintended consequences.”

– Professor Alex Blaszczynski, Director of theUniversity of Sydney’s Gambling Treatment Clinic.

“It is predicted that a mandatory system wherein gamblers set their own limits will only be effective for a minority and will not achieve the anticipated benefits.”

– Dr Sally Gainsbury, Centre for Gambling Education and Research, Southern Cross University.

Research shows that existing self exclusion schemes and counselling are the most effective tools for assisting problem gamblers.

Problem gamblers should not be in gaming venues, they should be in treatment where they can receive care.

With your continued support, we will continue to fight the current untested proposals and promote effective solutions to help the most vulnerable in our community.

WONTWORKWILLHURT.COM.AU

Under Gillard’s pre-commitment system problem gamblers won’t be helped because they’ll still be able to:

1 Sign up for a gambling card.

2 Gamble on poker machines and set a spending limit as high as they like.

3 Gamble without restriction on racing, sport or online.
