Ag Committee hosts Farm Transition Planning seminar

Every year the Minot Area Chamber ofCommerce’s Agribusiness Committee works tocoordinate seminars and events for area farm-ers and ranchers. Saturday Legislative Forums_______________________________________

The Minot Area Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affair’s SaturdayLegislative forums are underway at the ND State fair Center. The Legislativeforums feature the 12 area legislators from four Minot districts who are able toattend.

Participants can submit a question to a moderator who then asks the question of thelawmakers. All meetings will be at the ND State fair Center at 9 a.m. Watch for signsfor the meeting room. Meetings are subject to change depending on the status of theLegislative session.

In its previous 30 years, the annualMilitary Affairs Committee Prairie WarriorCompetition has raised more than a half amillion dollars. The funds support manybase organizations and functions designedto improve the morale of the men andwomen stationed at Minot Afb. Thisincludes expenses incurred by competitionteams, squadron activities and annualawards banquets. funds also go to theThanksgiving baskets project during theholiday season and operation Warmheart,a program for families in need.

The 31st annual auction, set forSaturday, March 18, will be held in theHoliday Inn in Minot with a preview ofauction merchandise beginning at 5:30p.m. The live auction, with auctioneer Johnbearman, will begin at 6:30 p.m.Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will beserved, and there is a $25 charge at thedoor.

Each year, the event raises thousands ofdollars to help with the expenses for MinotAir force base competitions. Every year,donations by area businesses and individu-

als make this event successful. Items donated can be serious, humorous,

unusual, imaginative or creative. Any spe-cial instructions or information about theitems, such as historical significance,should be included if applicable as theinformation may increase the items’ valueduring bidding.

How do we build a thriving communityof neighborhoods, businesses, schools, art,recreation and more? Many Minot busi-nesses and organizations, including theMinot Public Library, are all fighting forthe same thing: community engagementbrought about by a vibrant and passionatecitizenship. Rather than seek this engage-

ment separately, let’s work together to“build Minot”!

After the 2011 flood and the oil boom(and bust), it is time for citizens to physi-cally and emotionally build Minot backinto the community we all know it can be.With the “build Minot” campaign theMinot Public Library and other partners

will reach out to the community to find outwhat the people want their city to be. buildMinot gives a name to the rebuilding effortand shows the community that the City andimportant key players are taking action andasking for the community member’s input.

What exactly is build Minot? The plan isto have blocks and permanent markersin different, rotating spots in town.Community members can write on theblock how they want to “build” Minotor their vision for our community. Thenthey add their building block to the oth-ers to make a sculpture. After all of thebuilding blocks have been collected,MPL hopes to have an area artist takeall the blocks and make a sculpture.This fun campaign for the Minot PublicLibrary, and the people of Minot, is ulti-mately rooted in the gathering of dataand aspirations for our community.

Currently, the Minot Public Library islooking for local businesses and organi-zations who are willing to host one ofthese sculptures for up to two weeks togive their customers and guests theopportunity to share their ideas forbuilding a better community. With avariety of different locations, we will beable to reach diverse ages and commu-nity sects.

The Library is also looking for peopleto help with the build Minot wrap-upevent which is tentatively scheduled forJune. This event will include a largecommunity fair showcasing the differ-ent cultures and histories that make ourcommunity unique. In order to makethis community fair a reality, we willneed many different groups and ven-dors, as well as financial support.following the wrap-up event, the MinotPublic Library staff will tabulate thedata gathered and distribute it to all thepartners and supporters of build Minot.

The goal of this campaign is to gobeyond building structures, so that wecan answer the question of how to builda thriving community of neighbor-hoods, businesses, schools, art, recre-ation and more. Community Rocks set for Feb. 4

Community Rocks is back, with a 30-piece symphony orchestra, electric bass,drums and 15 of your favorite classicrock tunes from the 60s to the present.

After two sold-out shows the past twoyears, the  third annual CommunityRocks concert will be held at The Grandon Saturday, feb. 4, 2017.

This year’s proceeds will be donated tothe Roosevelt Park Zoo to help fund revi-sions to the Children’s Zoo. This projectwill allow the addition of interactive fea-tures to the children’s zoo barn, includingbridges, steps, and walkways for theenrichment and use of dwarf goats.Children will gain a unique visitor expe-rience by watching the goats play, climband use the bridges to move from pen topen. The Zoo also intends to providesupervised, hands-on interaction whereyouth can feed and touch the goats.

Enerbase awarding up to $8,000 inscholarships

Each year Enerbase CooperativeResources awards $1,000 scholarships toarea students who are entering their firstsemester of college. In 2016 there wereeight students who received a $1,000scholarship. Applications are numberedand then submitted to the board of direc-tors for their blind review. Applicants arechosen strictly based on communityinvolvement, school activities, GPA, andan essay submission that explains how

MSU business students compete andpresent internationally

Miriam Dumes (fresno, TX) and ErinKampen (Reserve, MT), College ofbusiness students, recently competed ontwo separate teams with university ofRegina students at the school’s Hill CaseCompetition. Twenty-eight teams com-peted. Kampen’s team took second placeoverall, and Dumas’ team received theMost Professional Presentation Award.The two Minot State university studentswere the only delegates from the unitedStates. All teams worked on a caseregarding how to motivate millennialsfor volunteerism for the united Way.

The students spent the first day in edu-cational sessions to prepare for the com-petition and come up with team strategiesto go forward. Case competitions allowfor students to practice managerial skills;build assessment skills of strengths andweaknesses of different organizations,garner experience in identifying strategicissues, evaluating alternatives, and form-ing plans; enhance business judgementand gain exposure to different industriesand types of organization.

The last day, students competed inteams of four to deconstruct the case,focused around the central theme of busi-ness strategy. Students spent three hoursdeconstructing their cases, followed by a15-minute presentation to the judges witha five-minute question-and-answer ses-sion. The competition concluded with anAwards Gala to celebrate the winners andthe teams’ participation.

Erne named Marco IT vice presidentAs 2017 commences, Marco is proud toannounce the promotion of Todd Erne toVice President of IT Solutions. SinceJanuary 2016, Erne had assumed therole of director of sales, based in the St.Louis Park, Minnesota office of Marco.

Erne, a 15-year veteran with Cisco,said he regularlyworked with Marcoon solutions for cus-tomers, leading to agreat relationship.

Trinity Hearts Gala set for Feb. 10The Trinity Health Auxiliary Healthy

Hearts Club will host a Hearts Gala onfriday, feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at theHoliday Inn Riverside. The black andwhite themed Gala includes a social, achicken cordon bleu and chef-carvedbeef buffet dinner, a silent auction, andentertainment from Midwest DuelingPianos.

“We are very excited about this year’sevent,” said Jordan Schmitt, coordinatorof the Healthy Hearts Club. “We knowMidwest Dueling Pianos is going to puton a great show for us.”

Proceeds from the event will go towardpurchasing cardiac chairs for Trinity’sheart patients. “These chairs are designedto help patients in their recovery fromheart surgery,” said Schmitt. “They aresimilar to hospital beds, except they pro-vide the patient with specialized support,allowing them to sit upright without put-ting undue stress on their fragile heart.”

Trinity Health employee receives“Patriot Award”

Trinity Health Sports MedicineManager Robyn Gust, MS, ATC, hasreceived the “Patriot Award” from theEmployer Support of the Guard and

Reserves (ESGR), an office of the uSDefense Department. This award is pre-sented to employers who contribute tonational security by demonstrating sup-port for employee participation inAmerica’s Guard and Reserve force.

Gust was nominated by Ashley King,an athletic trainer with Trinity Health anda member of the North Dakota NationalGuard. After King’s recent activation tothe protest in Cannon ball, she nominat-ed Gust for the award, writing: “Mysupervisor [Robyn] goes above andbeyond to make sure I am able to attendand serve my country and state for duty.She does everything in her power to besure that I am taken care of before andafter my service duty.”

Gust’s support of King and herNational Guard participation beganbefore King was an employee of TrinityHealth. “Hiring her was a no-brainer,”Gust said. “ I have known her since shewas a student, and I knew that the workethic that you have to have to be a part ofthat [National Guard] would carry overinto the work she would do for us.” Gustadds that the entire Sports MedicineDepartment rallies behind King withtheir support. “our department under-stands the importance of her abilityattend regular and extra training she maywant or need and to be able to performher military service at a moment’s

The Taube Museum of Art is seekingphotography submissions for thebiennial Photography Exhibition to beheld from feb. 14 – March 30, 2017  inthe Main Gallery. City of Minot prepares for automatedtrash collection

for nearly a decade the City of Minotgarbage collection rates have remainedunchanged for residents. That willchange in 2017 and so will the entire col-lection process.

“The last eight years we’ve offset thenatural increase in cost for homeownerson their sanitation bill by using moneygenerated from landfill tipping fees.”said City of Minot Assistant PublicWorks Director, Jason Sorenson. “Thatjust isn’t a feasible financial method forthe long-term.”

Citizens will see about a $6 per monthincrease on the sanitation fee in theirmonthly water bill. However, due toplans of automated collection in 2017,future rate increases will be minimized.“We’re going to save about a half milliondollars a year when we switch to automa-tion.” Says Sorenson.

The sanitation rate was set at $10.18per month in 2008, which has not cov-ered costs of residential collection. Thecost of collection has exceeded the sani-tation rate by roughly $5.25 per monthper resident.

The City of Minot will save in laborcosts moving toward automated collec-tion, needing less personnel on garbagetrucks for operations. Initial costs in2017 will be greater due to the purchas-ing of new equipment.

“It’s a long-term plan,” explained theCity of Minot Sanitation Superintendent,John Reynolds. “We’ll save in operationcosts and make a safer work environmentby moving towards automation.”

Currently, worker safety is among thetop reasons for the move to automation.Sanitation makes up just four percent ofthe City of Minot’s workforce, but has20-25 percent of the Workforce Safetyclaims. “When those numbers go downwe save money,” said Reynolds.
