PENTECOST SUNDAY
First Reading: Acts 2:1-11 During the Feast of Pentecost, tongues of fire came to rest on the heads of the disciples and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Each disciple began speaking in a different language, and were under-stood by people from many different regions who were amazed at what they had witnessed.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 Paul explains that we are all members of one body. We have all been baptized in one Spirit and although numerous, we are one through Christ.
Gospel: John 20:19-23 John describes Jesus’ first visit to the disciples after his resurrection. He gave them the Holy Spirit and the power to forgive other people or hold them re-sponsible for their actions.

Pentecost—the Birthday of the Church Our Church—the Birthday Celebration
Just before His Ascension into heaven, Jesus said to His Apostles: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you are to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria—yes, even to the ends of the Earth.” Today we are celebrating the fulfillment of those words. It was by the power of the Holy Spirit that the Apostles proclaimed the Good News of Jesus, a proclamation that has come through the Apostles, even to us living today.
Yes, today we celebrate Pentecost—”the birthday of the Church.” It was on the Feast of Pentecost that the Church began to spread. The Church spread with enthusiasm. The Apostles and first Christians knew something very special was in their midst and they responded. Their response to the spirit of God lives today in our parish.
St. Marys has been blessed for many years by God, and the parishioners have always responded with enthusiasm as did the early Christians. Now our parish has reason to be truly joyful.
Fundamentally, a church building’s uniqueness stems from its purpose, to be a place for worship. But it is not merely a place to pray: it is itself a pray-er. Everything about it serves to elevate the soul towards God and the building itself enables us as a parish to be united in this great endeavor. This church joins us together in joy, enthusiasm, prayer and support. How good God has been to us: how good He will continue to be. Let us together thank God for the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and for that same Spirit that guides our wonderful parish.
Thank you for all you do,
Fr. Duff
Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth.
