Planning and Selection of Heavy Construction Equipment in Civil Engineering
V. COMMON FC!O"S FFEC!#N$ SE%EC!#ON OF E&'#PMEN!Every equipment has certain factors those are in common and which are taken into considerationwhile selecting equipment. They are listed as follows-
• Scope of (or) to *e carried out- since the
first concern is getting the jo done! thetime frame within which the work is
required to e carried out! the specification
of work and the methodology adopted will
e of primary concern
• 'se of availa*le- for a work where full
utili"ation of new equipment for its entireworking life is not foreseen and its
utili"ation on
• Furt+er pro,ect is uncertain it may *e
desira*le to utili-e eisting old equipment
even t+oug+ its operation (ould *e
some(+at more epensive. The deprecation
cost of new machine is likely to e high and
this would rise the owing cost of the
machine and consequently unit cost of work. Economic should e worked out.
Suita*ility for ,o* conditions/the equipment
selected should suit the demands of the jo
conditions. #limate of region and workingconditions should e kept in view while
selecting the type of equipment.
• 'niformity in type- it is desirale to have
minimum numer of types so that there is
uniformity in the type of equipment on a
project. $t is desirale to select common
type of engine for different machine such ase%cavators! dump trucks! tractor and
scrapers purchased on the projects.
• Si-e of equipment 0/ while large si"e of
machines are capale of giving largeoutputs on full load! the cost of production
is usually greater than that of smaller unitsif worked out on part loads. &arge si"e of
equipment requires corresponding largesi"e of matching equipment. 'nd shutting
down of one primary unit may result in
making several other equipment idle.
Transportation and shipment are usuallydifficult and e%pensive. (owever large
equipment)s are more study and suitale for
tough working conditions. $t is also

desirale to have equipment of same si"e
on the project. $f there are standys the cost
of smaller equipment as standy may e
less that of larger si"e of equipment.
• 'se of standard Equipments 0/ standard
equipments are commonly manufactured
and are commonly availale and aremoderately priced. The spare parts of
standard equipment are easily availale and
less e%pensive. 'fter the work is over! it is
generally easier to dispose of standardequipment.
• 'nit cost production :- the economics is
one of the most important considerations in
selection of equipment. *hile working outowing cost all items of e%penses! such as
freight! packaging and forwarding!
insurance! erection and commissioning etc.
should e included with the price paid tosupplier.
•
Country of origin :- when imports are
unavoidale! it is preferale to import from
a soft currency than from a hard currency
area! if equipment quality is availale.
• vaila*ility of spare parts :- +own time for
want of necessary spare parts commonly
accounts for long idle periods duringworking life of equipment! especially of
imported equipment. 'vailaility of spare
parts at reasonale cost during the entire
working life should e assured whileselecting a particular type of equipment.
•
Versatility , the equipment selected should e if possile! e capale of performingmore than one function and should have
feature of inter convertiility as far as
possile.
• Selection of manufacturer: - it is desirale
to have equipment of the same
manufacturer on a project as far as possile
and to have minimum numer of different
makes of equipment. The quality of localdealers is also important.
• Suita*ility of local la*or :- availale
operators and technicians should e ale to
handle selected equipment.• !ec+nical consideration :- the efficient
performance of any piece of equipment
and its service life are conditioned yfollowing factors :
a. trength
. igidity
c. /iration stailityd. esistance to wear

' alance etween reliaility! investment cost andoperating cost should e found since a policy of
selecting the lowest priced equipment can often lead
to higher life cycle costs.
