Page 3: Common Core Update

Why?

• To bring alignment to what students should learn from state to state

• Provide clear and consistent guidelines for college and career readiness

• To reduce costs and allow states to pool resources

Page 4: Common Core Update

How common are they?

So far 37 states have adopted the Common Core.

Page 5: Common Core Update

In California, of course, We’ve got an Uncommon Common Core

• Academic Content Standard Commission recommended a supplemented Common Core

• State Board approved their recommendations on August 2, 2010

• CA supplemented with CA ELA and Math Standards not already included in Common Core

• We’re calling our new standards the California Common Core Standards (CCCS)

• CCCS includes only ELA and Mathematics

Page 6: Common Core Update

How can I get the CCCS?

• Download them at http://www.scoe.net/castandards/index.

html

• Purchase ACSA’s Standard Finder 8.2 (not quite yet available) Standard Finder 8.1 includes the

• Vocabulary standards• Standards for “collaborative discussions”• Literacy standards for history/social

studies, science, and technical subjects Embedded in K-5 In Grades 6-12 these are a separate set--

expectation is these will be shared between ELA teachers and teachers in history/social studies and science

Page 10: Common Core Update

What’s different in math?

• More similarities than differences• Some shifts in grade level for some

skills• Organization of the standards

By grade level through Grade 8 Algebra 1 Clusters of standards for 9-12

• Two options for eighth graders

Page 11: Common Core Update

How about Assessment?

• CA is in a 26 state consortium to create new assessments Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness

for College and Careers (PARCC)

• Current STAR sunsets in 2012-13• New assessment could be administered in

2014-15 and piloted the year before• Info at

http://www.achieve.org/files/CCSS&Assessments.pdf

Page 15: Common Core Update

What should we do now?

• Be aware that we have adopted the California Common Core Standards for ELA and Math

• Know that the CDE and SBE are developing a timeline for implementation This timeline will hopefully be approved at the

November 2010 SBE meeting• Understand that good teaching with current

standards will also lead to high levels of learning with the new standards

• Realize that county offices are taking the lead in developing resources for the transition to CCCS
