What are the Common Core Standards?

The Common Core Standards define the rigorous skills and knowledge in English Language Arts and Mathematics that K-12 students need to master.

These standards are based on College and Career Readiness Standards and are intended to prepare students to become competitive in theglobal marketplace.

What guidelines were followed in the development of the CCS?

The Standards must:

• Be focused and coherent

• Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills

• Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards

• Be internationally benchmarked so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society

• Be based on evidence and research

Why are the Common Core Standards important?

• Currently, students in each state are learning at different levels and with different expectations.

• All students must be prepared to compete with not only their American peers in thenext state, but with students from aroundthe world.

American students are falling behind academically when compared to students from other countries.

International comparisons show that:• In 2003, the United States ranked 15th in Reading.• In 2003, the United States ranked 24th in problem solving.• In 2006, the United States ranked 25th in Mathematics.• In 2006, the United States ranked 21st in Science .

• Teaching the Standards ensures that American students receive a world-class education that prepares them with the skills and knowledge to compete in the 21st century.
