WCSD Common Core Vision

The Whittier City School District will assume full implementation of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, Mathematics, English Language Development, and Literacy in

History Social Science and Science. WCSD will facilitate ongoing learning opportunities for teachers to engage them in developing

research based instructional practices to ensure continuous student growth. Schools will foster collaboration by providing

supportive structures and settings to enrich Professional Learning Communities focused on teaching and learning. To prepare

students for a 21st Century job market, classroom experiences will be designed to encourage student creativity, increase meaningful

discourse and communication, develop critical thinking skills, while providing opportunities for problem solving and

collaboration, engaging students by means of technological resources and high quality materials.

WCSD Goals Ensure teachers’ understanding of the Common Core

Standards and Instructional Shifts Provide support for lesson design and methodology, as well

as planning and resources for the effective implementation of the CCSS

Provide training on the integration of technology and the development of 21st Century skills into classroom instruction

Promote teacher collaboration and provide protocols for enhancing professional learning teams

Develop parent understanding of the Common Core so that they may support their children at home
