4 The Bridge May 2003

A Native American proverb says, We will be known for-ever by the tracks we leave.

For over 30 years, the Junior League of Boca Raton hasbeen leaving indelible tracks in the communities that weserve. We blaze uncharted trails, uncover unmet commu-nity needs and then work to create positive change. Weare all map makers, exploring the unknown, honing ourskills, all the while embracing change and innovation aswe shape solutions to our communitys needs.

We went about this year with great enthusiasm for ourplacements, making substantial progress in meeting theneeds of so many of our neighbors. We were honored towork with our partner agencies to effect change. Weforged ahead onthe Funding theFuture capital cam-paign with manyLeague leaders in-volved in cultiva-tion and solicita-tion. Our effortsgenerated incredible results and helped assure the cam-paigns success. The Vegso Community Resource Centerwill provide:

Our history continues to unfold and we as League mem-bers will continue to serve the community, seeking tochart a better course for the generations to come.

As I reflect on the years accomplishments, my memoriesare enriched with thoughts of the individuals involved in aparticular project or initiative. FEATURE ARTICLE

MOMMY DEAREST OR MOMMY MADDEST? BY ANNE HENDERSON

If you have been following my column(which Im sure you have) you mightremember that I am the worlds oldestfreshman at least until I work up thecourage to take the GRE and actuallyget accepted into graduate school. Oneof my professors in a multi-cultural edu-cation class passed out topics for aresearch paper. My topic? Women and

Their Role in Society. When I got over the shock of realizingthat as a woman I am considered a minority (arent we over50%of the population?), I thought Great! How easy! I ama woman, after all (and God knows I have more experience at itthan most of my classmates.) Piece of cake. As I started myresearch, I was struck by the fact that most of it was not exact-ly positive. It was really hard to find an article on how great itis to be a woman today. This was a real surprise to me, as I havealways enjoyed and appreciated womanhood. There are somereally great things you get doors opened for you, you donthave to lift heavy objects, you get to have children, not to men-tion that the shoes are much better, and men dont (usually) geta wide range of choice in the handbag arena. I have pretty muchbeen happy. Of course, I have to take into consideration thatmost of the people that take the time to write essays, doresearch, and get posted on the Internet have a serious beef butyou have to wonder how did we get so angry?

In my research, I found quite a few reasons to be a little testy -some of which are:

! We now have a very conflicted role in society. At one timeour path was clear we got married, had kids, and devotedour time to being a good wife and mother. Although therewere not as many choices, society validated and respectedthe role. As women have fought for equality in the work-force, the battle on the home front has not yet been won.Although 55% of women in America earn over 50% of theirfamilys income, women still do the majority of the house-work. We are tired! Women that dont work outside thehome have their own cross to bear, because instead of beingrevered, staying home is equated with doing nothing. Idont remember one of my friends said a conversationwhere I agreed that he would support me in exchange for mydoing everything else it just evolved. I gave up my 40 houra week job for a 24/7 job - its just not fair.

! In 47 of the 50 states women do not have unequivocal legalright to half of her familys assets, nor does her unpaid workentitle her to any ownership of the primary breadwinnersincome. (Note to self: move to California, Louisiana or NewMexico if husband really gets cranky).

! Social Security does not allow credit for the unpaid years awoman spends at home with her child. Ironically, if a nanny

is employed to care for a child, she would earn social securi-ty credits, but a mother taking care of her own child does not.Unless a woman is otherwise employed, she is also notentitled to unemployment insurance or workmans compen-sation or even tax-free contributions to her IRA. The onlysafety net available to women that lose their source of sup-port is welfare. (Note to self: be nicer to husband.)

! Although the gap is closing women still do not get paiddollar for dollar the same wage as men.

! Men do not have to agonize over the choice to go back towork and have a wonderful fulfilling career, or stay at homeand devote their time to their children. Some men do chooseto stay home with their kids and do a great job, but societydoes not expect it of them. My husband is a wonderfulfather, but he doesnt feel guilty when he walks out the doorin the morning the children never ask him why he isntroom mother or driving for the field trip they just dontexpect for him to be at any but the most important schoolevents. He is guilt free while I am driven primarily out ofguilt.

! We have noticed that our husbands (for the most part thereare a few exceptions) have a little bit more free time than wedo. Taking out the garbage and killing the occasional pal-metto bug does not seem to nearly take up as much time as,say, doing 15 loads of laundry, cooking meals, driving toschool, sports events, handling family trips, taking care ofpets, unloading the dishwasher, helping with homework . . .anyway you get the idea. My husband sometimes tells me(when I am hard at work after 10:00 p.m.) Hey, honey dontworry about it. One time I snapped: well, yes that maywork in your world, but it doesnt in mine - because you arenot saying dont worry about it because you will do it, youare saying dont worry about it because I can do it tomorrow.Well, I have a full day tomorrow and if I dont do this now itwill just put me behind the eight ball tomorrow. Sometimesmy husband must think I am like Dino from the Flintstones (arh rah rah rah rah! arh rah rah rah rah!)

! I am finding out that my mother was right. About every-thing. That makes me the maddest of all.

I dont mean to come across as a malcontent or a man-hater.Actually I love my life I chose it and Id choose it again in aheartbeat. And I love my husband. But like many women thatI know, I am a perfectionist with a too full schedule, and oftenI work on what is most urgent instead of what is most impor-tant. I dont take the time to work on things I want to work on things for myself or the community. I dont want to get to theend of my life and have people say, Well, she had a cleanhouse as if that was all I accomplished. (Note to self no dan-ger there!) Maybe if we took the time to focus on what is trulyimportant to us we wouldnt be so mad.

CHAMPION GLIDES INTO JLBR BY PAMELA DISHER

Okay. I thought I had heard just abouteverything regarding all the differenttalents and gifts our members have. However, an email flashed over myscreen indicating that we have a trophywinning, international hang glideramong us! During the late 70s andearly 80s she was the first, and only, woman hang glider in her mother coun-try of Columbia. Perhaps her most

memorable flight was crossing France to Switzerland. On thereturn trip, the Italian government held her overnight on herway back to France. She had forgotten her passport and told theauthorities she just flew in to the country!

It is with this same great vigor that our Member of the Monthhas applied herself to her committee, In The Pines. It is withgreat pleasure I present Marcela Schneider. She has been anintegral component to In The Pines the entire year. Marcelanever thinks twice to make sure she is available to her chair andassistant chair. She continually extends her open arms andlovely home to her committee members.

Marcela is a first year active and is serving as Treasurer of hercommittee. Not only has she put together the budget informa-tion, she has assisted with each of the In the Pines events. Herdedication has led her to attend all but one committee meeting.Marcela has also stepped in to attend the In the Pines boardmeetings when her chair and assistant chair were unable to. Shenot only attended, but was an active participant with incredibleinsight in the future of In The Pines.

Marcela also has the gift of being a great motivator. Each com-mittee member has been touched by her ability of empower-ment. She has a fabulous sense of humor, is known for herfunny jokes and most of all, inspires those around her to moveahead in life. Marcela makes her fellow committee membersrealize they could be more than a wife, mother and employee ifthey only put their minds to it, focus and make it happen.

Perhaps she offers that advice based on her own womanlyadventures! Marcela is a dedicated and loving wife to her won-derful husband Michael and together they have three truly gift-ed boys: Stephan, Andre and Antoine. Although an architect bytrade, Marcela is working full-time bringing up her boys. Noeasy task between volunteering with their school, piano andviolin lessons, soccer, horseback riding and the many otherthings that come along with raising three boys!

Its obvious that this is one driven ladybetween volunteering, raising a family and hang gliding, we are honored to announcethat Marcela has stepped up to the plate to serve as co-chair ofthe In the Pines committee for the JLBR 2003/2004 year!

As In the Pines chair Lourdes Delfin shared with me, Marcelahas made a commitment to serve the JLBR. I am sure she willexcel in her placement as she is an asset to both this organiza-tion and to the many friends she has made this year, especiallyme. She is admired by so many for so much.

With Marcelas constant positive attitude, leadership attributesand genuine concern for others, we are in for a great glide withMarcela steering! Congratulations and keep up the great work!

EPOCH HAS A SUCCESSFUL YEAR BY CANDACE BERRY-VAUGHN

A new Community Service project thisyear was EPOCH, one that many won-dered, What is this project all about? While I accepted the position ofCommittee Chair, I too had many ques-tions. Well having worked on this pro-ject, I can honestly say that its been avery rewarding experience. Programssuch as this are greatly needed in todayssociety. Our youth are faced daily with

challenges that threaten to erode their spirit and ability to succeed.Too often children are made to feel unimportant thereby strippingthem of a sense of pride, self-respect and respect for others.

The EPOCH Kids Cultural Club is an outreach program thatteaches and encourages the youth of Delray Beach to understandthe importance of preparing for the future; to take pride in andappreciate their cultural history and heritage; and to develop anunderstanding of their world around them. The pilot programbegan on January 15, 2002, at the Village Academy in DelrayBeach, who invited EPOCH in to work with the youth in theirafter school program. The pilot was a success and got the atten-tion of parents, teachers and other schools in the area. There areseveral schools that are ready to incorporate the Kids CulturalClub into their programs, particularly since the State of Floridabegan to focus on teaching Florida history to 4th graders.

The Kids Cultural Club hasserviced 96 youth andseniors to date and is cur-rently holding sessions at theDelray Beach CommunityChild Care Center. The pro-gram has garnered wide-spread support including thegenerous support of the

Junior League of Boca Raton. The $5000 grant awarded toEPOCH in 2002 funded several components of the Kids Club. The first component focused on personal finance. The studentswere given ceramic piggy banks to decorate and personalize.Various activities and games were designed to strengthen andenhance their knowledge of the value of money. Such activities

included coin identification and theirvalues; the history of money, the con-cept of purchasing power and theimportance of saving. This compo-nent, along with the other subjectshelped to create a well-rounded selec-tion of activities for our youth.

Another component implemented thisyear was visual poise. Here the chil-dren learned the importance and value

of public presentations such as introductions, personal grooming, dining etiquette and public speaking. Currently, Epoch is spon-soring a series of trolley tours that will take our youth and seniorson a tour of the historical neighborhoods in Delray Beach as wellas other historical and cultural sites around the Boca Raton andDelray Beach area. The first of this tour series took place onMarch 19th and was well attended by children between the agesof 6 and 13. Several children had the opportunity to perfect andshowcase their skills inpublic speaking as theyconducted the tours of theSpady House Museumand the trolley tour.

For their first year of exis-tence, EPOCH has accom-plished a lot. I commendthe founders of EPOCH,and the Board of Directors for having the vision, desire, and com-mitment to fill an important void. Thank you for caring. Thankyou for making a difference.

SIBLING SHELTER - BUILDING IS COMPLETE! BY LAUREN FORBES

Construction of the two new buildingsat The Childrens Place South is final-ly complete! The buildings are cleanand bright, with new tile floors andcolorful walls. Once the buildingshave been fully furnished, the specialresidents will be able to make theirmove! At that time, the existing shel-ter will be refurbished, and The

Childrens Place South can be expanded to include siblingsfrom newborns to 12 years.

This project could not have been completed without the gener-ous assistance of John Hock Enterprises, Inc. The contractingfirm worked with Carolyn Smith and the Junior League of BocaRatons Sibling Shelter Expansion Committee to help TheChildrens Place at Home Safe expand the Boca Raton campus. Not only did the firm donate their services at cost, but they alsoutilized their contacts in the construction industry to obtain sup-plies and subcontracting at discounted rates! The Junior Leagueof Boca Raton wishes to thank John Hock Enterprises, Inc. fortheir expertise and generosity!

This year has also included many special occasions for shelterresidents and JLBR members. Halloween Trick or Treating,Christmas with Santa, and an Easter Egg Hunt brought shelterresidents and JLBR members together, thanks to DIAD and theSibling Shelter Expansion committee. DIAD has also started anew event this year; Good Night at The Childrens Place. Ithas been a great success, providing members with hands-oncommunity experience as they spend the evening at the shelterpreparing dinner, reading books, and tucking-in the kids.

Next years Sibling Shelter Expansion committee will finalizethe refurbishing and expansion of The Childrens Place South. They will plan a Grand Opening of the new shelter to celebratethe accomplishments of all those who contributed to the project.JLBR members will also be involved in creating age-appropri-ate programming for the new residents. For example, SusanMersch has offered to start a Girl Scout troop at the shelter thisfall! Although the construction will be complete, the JLBRcommittee will continue to work to make the expansion asmooth transition for The Childrens Place at Home Safe, and acomfortable home for its residents!

AVDA - YEAR IN REVIEW BY LISA BARISO

The AVDA Child Care Center commit-tee had a rewarding month in October,Domestic Abuse Awareness Month. Weshared with members the reality of theamount of abuse taking place in ourarea. We continue to ask members to beaware of signs of abuse within theirfamily and friends. Also, at the Octobergeneral membership meeting we col-

lected clothes for the mothers and children of AVDA, and allitems were greatly appreciated. At the end of the month com-mittee members as well as some actives and sustainers enjoyeda beautiful Saturday morning walk along the beach, while par-ticipating in the AVDA Walk-a-thon.

Our committee had a delightful time designing and creating the

Child Care Center. We picked out tables, chairs, games, toys, rugs, cribs, bookshelves, books, and much, much more. Wealso secured an artist to paint murals of storybook characters onthe walls. We contacted several furnishing and supply compa-nies, and we are still working on final pricing. The actual cen-ter will not be completed for several months, so we still haveplenty of time to work on getting better pricing and donations.

We would like to thank all the members who were so generousin donating to our Easter basket collection. The women andchildren of AVDA were so appreciative of the baskets we pre-sented them. We thank you for everything you all have done forthe women and children of AVDA and hope you will continueto support them next year.

LEARNING & EXPERIENCE - MY THOUGHTS BY LOURDES M. DELFIN

I began my journey as the Chair for In the Pines in the Summerof 2002. I was eager to learn and accomplish the goals set forthe year and knew it could be done with the talented group ofmembers placed on my committee. I remember wanting tomake a difference, to bring new ideas to realization and to helpmake each member a better volunteer.

I was particularly excited to Chair this committee because it hadbeen my volunteer commitment for the past two years and I hadbecome attached to the children and families within this partic-ular community. Overseeing the final stages of the constructionof In the Pines South through 2003 was partially my motiva-tion; however, I quickly learned that my other motivation wasto extend my volunteerism goals and also to form new friend-ships with other women who shared a similar need to serve. Ilearned that I was not alone as a woman trying to make a dif-ference and that I could work as a leader, mentor and friend tohelp other women add meaning to their community projectsthrough the Junior League.

One of my goals was to add excitement to my committee and tocontinually acknowledge the support they give to the JuniorLeague and their specific community project. In turn, the mem-bers worked harder to complete their individual and group goalsand everyone gained worthwhile skills providing assistance toa community in need.

I am saddened to step down as Chair of In the Pines because the

experience I have gained has been priceless; however, as theChair, I realize my contribution to my committee membersserved its purpose and I must step down and turn over the nextexciting year to two well-trained members and a new active for2003-2004.

Thank you to the In the Pines members, Adriana, Jaime, Jane,Jorganna, Karen, Marcela, Stacy, Stephanie and Suzanne andalso to the new actives, Diana, Emily, Heather, Jennifer, Kathy,Lori and Loretta for all the hard work you have put into makingthis committee succeed throughout the year. I will not forgetthe great service you have done and admire each and every oneof you for being a great individual and woman volunteer.

I am looking forward to nurturing the new friendships I havestarted and expect we will all learn and experience more thanwe ever dreamed in the future.

CHILDRENS ASSISTANCE ROCKS ON! BY JOANNE LOVEDAY BUTCHER

To show that we dont mess around, westarted the year in August just to get ajump on the rest of you guys with abackpack affair. Five hundred back-packs were organized and loaded up bythe children at our three sponsored cen-ters to build excitement and get readyfor the new school year. We carriedthrough on that theme in cooperation

with Boca Raton Community Hospital and other healthcare ser-vices to provide immunizations, vision and hearing checks, blood pressure, blood sugar, & cholesterol screening as well.

Our committee provided the party: a great barbeque and enter-tainment with dancing and fun for all! Other fall activitiesincluded science experiments and flubber merrymaking withHigh Touch High Tech Programs.

We gave thanks with baskets overflowing with art supplies tocope with the sometimes stressful holiday season and includedmuch needed toiletries. Christmas was really party time! DixieManor, New Pines and the Youth Activity Center each receivedfabulous Holiday bashes with magicians, and a marvelous meal.Pictures with Santa were framed and the frames decorated bythe children to take home as their party favor.

A pizza party and ice cream social with Olympic gold metalwinner Alberto Salazar taught children at Dixie Manor the

importance of sticking with something even when it is difficult.Alberto didnt eat any pizza the eve of the Junior League andTown Center sponsored 5K Run, but he admitted that he does.Spring time fun at the three centers include art supplies and artlessons at the Youth Activity Center (YAC,) busses to travel tooutside activities, another high touch high-tech science experi-ence, and Escape School - teaching children how to escapefrom dangerous situations. A Cake Walk Party and bake sale atNew Pines taught the Children money management and entre-preneurial skills.

Combining fun with learning important skills for disadvantagedchildren has taught the members of the Childrens AssistanceCommittee more than the little people we set out to assist. Agreat time was had by all in a terrific party atmosphere.

THANKS FOR THREE GREAT YEARS BY JAMI N. GUTTENBERG

So after three great years on the Done InA Day Committee, of which I was Chairfor two, its time to move on. I cantbelieve how quickly another Leagueyear has passed us by. The DIADCommittee worked so hard this year tocome up with new and creative opportu-nities for the Junior League to serve inthe Boca Raton and Delray

Communities. We offered 40 DIAD events, and had over 200League Members participate for over 800 hours of volunteerservice!

Of course Sandwich Day remained our most popular event, butthere was a new enthu-siasm from those whoparticipated in theCelebrity Chef Din-ners at Carver Estate. What a better way tovolunteer and be handson than to cook andserve these kids a hotmeal!

Our relationship with the Special Olympics of Palm BeachCounty grew as well this year. We provided volunteers for notone, not two, but three of their events! Can you imagine a bet-ter use of your time than cheering on one of these special chil-dren?

We did more with some of our own projects this year therewere lots of opportunities for our members to spend some timeat Childrens Place. From taking the kids trick or treating onHalloween, to creating an Easter Egg Hunt, to just spendingsome time getting them ready for bed and reading bedtime sto-ries just a few hours of your time means a lot to these kids.

The Internal P.R. Committee helped to spearhead another suc-cessful Toy Drive. We donated over 800 toys to EPOCH, InThe Pines, New Pines, The Youth Activity Center, Dixie Manor,

and the Family Visitation Center. We played a key role in con-junction with the newly formed Spirit of Giving Committeeto make sure that every child from all the nonprofit organiza-tions in the area had a toy from Santa this Christmas. What anamazing feeling it was to walk in the Barton Center and seesuch a great collaboration of effort thanks to Barbara Schmidt!

Habitat for Humanity Building and Collegiate Dinner, theCROS Volunteer Party, the Schepens Eye Institute Symposium, the In The Pines Sports Day and the Wellness Fair rounded outour year with oldies but goodies for DIAD.

Weve tried very hard to come up with DIAD opportunities inwhich our members could walk away thinking that they havereally made a contribution, and how they spent their time real-ly meant something to someone. For all of you that did morethan one DIAD this year thank you for your volunteerism andwe look forward to awarding a great prize to that lucky personthat did the most this year at the May Dinner Meeting! Thankyou to Project Development for being the first committee tohave all the members complete their DIAD!

And last but not least thank you to the entire DIAD Committeefor working so hard and making it a fun year at the same time!

So to next years chair, Nancy Dockerty and chair elect StacyLovit - I hand you over the reigns, and hope you have as greatan experience as I have. Look for me standing in line at theSeptember General Membership Meeting to sign up for myDIAD (or maybe Ill just use the web site!)

COOKBOOK - WHAT A YEAR! BY NICOLE MUGAVERO

WOW! What an amazing year! This years cookbook commit-tee started and ended on high notes. We want to thank all of youfor your help in making this another successful year for Savorthe Moment. We feel that success is built on friendship andtrust. All of the information to follow in this article could nothave been written without the friendships weve made both inthe League and in our community. We extend our thanks andgratitude to everyone who has helped to make this a profitableyear for Savor the Moment.

It started with the photo shoot for Coastal Living magazine fea-tured in the December/January 2003 issue. The story linefeatured a party hosted by Michelle and Rick Rochon celebrat-ing the success of Savor the Moment with Cindy Krebsbach,Lynn Holcomb and their JLBR friends. It was an excitingfew days working with the staff of Coastal Living. Sales of thecookbook have been on the rise since the release of that article. We are also happy to announce that we received applications formembership to our League as a result of the article.

You might say this is the year of firsts for Savor the Moment.

After much research in past years, this years committee haspursued some avenues not yet traveled. This was the first yearof a National P/R campaign for Savor the Moment. While it ishard to track tangible sales on a monthly basis, sales have con-tinued to be strong and steady. It was also the first year thatSavor the Moment has swapped cookbooks with otherLeagues in the country. As we all by now should own a copy ofSavor the Moment, we felt it was time to explore the option ofoffering other Leagues cookbooks to our League. Theresponse from all of you was overwhelmingly successful! Oursales have been tremendous and we thank all of you for yoursupport again in this new endeavor.

The League has also had a first in the new member class, wehave received several wonderful additions to our committee. These new members jumped right in and have been helpful tous in achieving our ultimate goal for the year which is MEET-ING OUR GOAL! We are so proud to announce that we metour goal as of March 25!

But it doesnt stop there. At the end of March we held ourSpring Cookbook Caravan and sold over six cases as well ascultivated relationships with new and existing accounts.

As our League year ends, we want to say thank you to our friends. So enjoy an Iced Coffee Frappe with your Best Friend, andthank you from the 2002/2003 cookbook committee!

FUNDING THE FUTURE BY PATTIE DAMRON

The JLBR Capital Campaign is aliveand well. The beginnings of the newVegso Community Resource Centerwill soon be visible on the property at261 N.W. 13th Street. Our constructionplans have passed the public worksreview and our General Contractor,Kaufman Lynn, applied for permittingon April 1. The demolition of the exist-

ing structure on the property should be completed in the nextmonth and the construction will begin soon thereafter.Hopefully by this time next year we will be welcoming thecommunity into our new home!

The Campaign has currently raised over $1.5 million and is still

actively seeking funds to furnish and endow this fabulous facil-ity. As you know, the Center will enable the League to expandour services to the community by providing the space to offertraining seminars for other nonprofits, housing a grant library, acare-giver resource center, and an office for a social workerwho will serve the families of our community projects. We stillneed your help!

I hope you will take this opportunity to help us shape the futureof our League and the community by making a donation to thiswonderful project. All League members who make a gift to theCenter before October 1, 2003 will be recognized on a specialMembership Plaque that will be installed in a place of honor inthe Community Room. All contributions are welcome andgreatly appreciated. We would love to have 100% participation!

TRINKETS & TREASURES GOES OUT WITH A BANG BY CARRIE RUBIN

My witty and creative writing co-chairDenise Zimmerman has asked me toguest write the column again. She justhad a baby boy and oh is he a looker!

I ran into a League member the otherday, she asked Carrie, how did Thriftdo? and I responded exuberantly thatwe made $40,000! Her response backwas 40,000 on junk! Well, yes and

no. Our goal was to make $30,000, which we exceeded. Thereason why we exceeded is because of the ingredients that wentinto making that profit was more than just thrift. Our commit-tee set out on a progressive campaign to seek underwriters andwe were very successful! We also got our invitations under-written. Next project was our silent auction for which wesolicited over 60 items. This was a great moneymaker sinceeverything was donated. We reaped the benefits and raisednearly $10,000! We also had new vendor tables which we soldat $150 each. This was a late project we took on, but we werestill successful in selling 13 tables. We also had a raffle, Showme the Money, which generated profits. For the expenses wedid have to incur, we solicited many proposals, a key in negoti-ating when you have people that want the business. Watching

your expenses is a key ingredient to the bottom line when doinga fundraiser. Now on to the junk! Yes, we did make over$20,000 on our many trinkets and treasures that filled the gym.We have all of you to thank for your wonderful donations.

The most important ingredient to a successful fundraiser is thecommittee. The committee was made up with smart, hard-working and dedicated women. Trinkets &Treasures committeereported to the Finance Council whose members included thePresident, President-Elect, Treasurer, the fundraiser chairs andwas chaired by Sharon McGuire, V. P. of Finance. This is wherea lot of ideas and groundwork is done before we go to commit-tee meetings. Thank you to the Finance Council for all yourhelp and support and especially those three hour meetings!Thank you to our President, Cindy Krebsbach, who took anactive role in caring about our needs, offering great ideas, mak-ing baskets for the auction, having the time to talk whenever wecalled, being a great cheerleader and supporter and spending thewhole weekend during our event running around taking picturesand just simply helping out. What a great role model she is!

I am grateful for the friends I made and satisfied on the impactthe League made in the community with this successful sale!

COMMITTEE NEWS

Well, ladies, it seems the end of ourJLBR year is upon us. What a fabulousyear its been!

Personally I have had the honor ofmeeting so many of the JLBRs out-standing new members, members, actives, transfers and sustainers. Wevebeen able to acknowledge eleven out-standing members as our Members of

the Month. Each month I was amazed at the dedication, levelof commitment and special talents that each of our Members ofthe Month shared with our organization. It was truly a hum-bling experience to write the monthly articles!

Then, for the first time this year, we initiated the Members for aMinute. Another way that we were able to recognize membersthat have shown incredible contributions to their committees. We handed out over 70 tokens of appreciation, way to go ladies!

I was also able to share in the joy of over a dozen new babies.I learned of struggles and illnesses some of you were enduring. And sometimes I listened to you tell of a loved one you recent-ly lost. What stands in my mind, is how strong all of you are

and the loving support you had from family and friends.

We acknowledged our governance council by sending occa-sional emails noting how much their hard work and leadershipskills were appreciated. I then received emails back thankingme for thanking them, what a rewarding position this hasproven to be! You all are too much!

A special thank you to the board members and committee chairsthat directed me to all you wonderful women that were recog-nized. Thanks to the little birdies that sent me emails whensomeone needed a little cheering up or a special thank you. Abig thank you to Kris Killip, VP of Personnel, for her constantsupport and encouragement to take this position to a new level.Thank you to all the members that shared with me a piece oftheir lives. Thank you for allowing me to serve as one of yourMembers at Large.

Wishing all of you a safe and fun summer vacation! P.S.Remember to keep me posted of any unique summer plans, newbabies, engagements, marriages, deaths or other happenings. Weare planning another Summer Snippet column and need yourinput! Please send all your information to [email protected] or just give me a jingle at home, (561) 988-8091.

CANDY, BOAS & HALOS BY CHRISTINE KRAFT

What an exciting and busy year this hasbeen for the Internal PR Committee.Planning all those monthly meetingscould seem like hard work but when thecommittee gets along beautifully it isjust a lot of fun! We all had a great timewith our party atmosphere committeemeetings and became great friends.

Our committee had a few major accom-plishments this League year. Thanks to Cheryl Scardinia andMichelle Duffys negotiating skills we had a brand-new venue,The Renaissance Hotel, for our General Membership meetings. Both sides are pleased with the relationship and it will be ourvenue for next year.

At our November General Membership meeting we joinedforces with DIAD and were able to lend a helping hand to theirtoy drive and make it easier for our members to donate toys tochildren in need.

The entire membership showed their love for Sustainers at theFebruary General Membership meeting. The cookie cakesseemed to be a big hit.

We also added sponsorships in two levels and vendors at ourmeetings. This idea has been a huge success. Everyone seemedto enjoy getting a little shopping done before the meetings. With the proceeds our committee was able to provide delicious

finger food at every meeting. If you are interested in being avendor or a sponsor for the September meeting be sure to signup soon to hold your spot! You dont want to miss out.

Our Socials were also successful. Everyone had a great time atThe Comedy Club in the fall and at 32 East to start the holidays. Our spring social at Carls almost sent us over the top. The pro-ceeds from our spring social went to the Vegso CommunityResource Center. How much fun can you have in a year? OurMay dinner meeting is the perfect way to end a fabulous year.

Every member of our committee spent lots of time making thisall possible. We know how hard you all work and wantedeveryone to feel appreciated. We sure loved every moment ofour party planning! This year has been a wonderful Leagueexperience.

Premenstrual Syndrome or PMS is now recog-nized as a legitimate medical condition that inmild to moderate form affects up to 85 percentof all women. Another 5 percent have symp-toms so severe that they interfere with theirwork, family or social life. It is possible foryou to find a monthly antidote thats right foryou. It just might require a little experimenta-tion.

Its a hormonal thing . . .

The symptoms of an impending period are reasonably obvious-some physical (bloating, acne, food cravings, muscle aches, weight gain, headache, breast tenderness, heart palpitations, anddisturbed sleep), others psychological (irritability, anxiety, mood swings, and poor concentration). Many women have acombination of complaints. Hormones are at the heart of thisconstellation of complaints. Scientists cant identify exactlywhat the culprit is. One theory is serotonin, the happinessinducing brain chemical. Serotonin fluctuates at this time dur-ing the month causing rapid changes in your mood and energylevel. In several studies PMS sufferers who took Prozac orother serotonin-affecting antidepressants experienced a 50 per-cent or better improvement in symptoms.

Genetics, having a baby, starting or stopping birth control pillscould all trigger the onset of PMS. Most perplexing toresearchers is that many women experience an increase in PMSsymptoms as they age. One possible explanation for this ischanges in estrogen production causing greater swings in sero-tonin as a woman enters her 30s. Another explanation suggestsits not that a womans symptoms intensify, but that her toler-ance lessens.

Do you have it?

At first, diagnosing PMS seems like a no-brainer: one or morephysical or psychological symptoms that regularly kick in with-in two weeks of the start of your period. But because a numberof medical problems - including thyroid deficiency, anemia, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, allergies, and migraines

may also intensify in the days before your period, it is often dif-ficult to distinguish between other health issues and PMS.

If you suspect your pre-period blahs are attributable to PMS,your first step is to seek out a physicians advice. An accuratediagnosis has two steps: your doctor needs to do a thoroughmedical and psychological history, and you should get a bloodtest to detect possible underlying health conditions like anunderactive thyroid. Second, you will probably be asked tokeep a detailed symptoms diary for a minimum of two months.

How it works: Your doctor supplies a list of dozens of symp-toms related to PMS, from irritability to fatigue. Every day, even on the days when you are not nearing your monthly, yourecord and rank any health complaints in your diary on a scaleof none at all to extreme. After two month, review your logwith your doctor. You will be able to see whether there is aclear-cut PMS pattern-one in which symptoms increase duringthe 14 days before your period, then diminish within one hourto a few days after you start bleeding. The diary is the key tothe diagnosis.

Finding Relief

If your diagnosis is confirmed, dont assume that means youhave to head straight for medication. Lifestyle and non-drugtreatments may improve the symptoms sufficiently. One majormedicine-free breakthrough: calcium. In a recent study of 464women suffering from PMS, those women who received 1,200milligrams of calcium per day for three full menstrual cyclessaw their symptoms-low mood, water retention, food cravings, and lower back pain almost cut in half. Calcium is safe, bene-fits your bones, inexpensive and a no-risk proposition! Dontforget, increasing the amount of dairy in your diet-yogurt, low-fat milk and cheese will increase your calcium intake as well.Exercise has proven to be another successful self-help strategyfor fighting PMS. Hormonal changes can cause women to gainpre-period pounds. The weight gain is primarily due to waterretention; however, it makes many women feel uncomfortableand unattractive. Exercise has been shown to elevate levels of

NO MORE PMS: THE LASTEST TREATMENTS

WATER CAN IT HELP GET RID OF FAT - YES & NO

Yes, water does help metabolize fat and suppress theappetite. If you are dehydrated, the liver, which metabolizedfat, must stop doing its job to aid the kidneys. Water is animportant thing if you want to help your body lose weight.

No, water is essential for health but it is not a weight losselixir. The liver does metabolize fat and drinking eightglasses a day helps all organs work well but no researchexists linking the amount of water you drink with the quan-tity of weight loss.

naturally occurring chemicals in the body that improve mood.As little as 20 minutes a day can help women feel better aboutPMS-related weight gain.

So slip on your walking shoes and stock up on calcium richTums! If these self-help methods fail to relieve your symptomstalk to your doctor about other solutions. Some options are:

The Pill: For some women low doses of oral contraceptiveswork miracles. If symptoms are primarily mood related, the Pillcan be hit or miss and sometimes may exacerbate the problem.Spironolactone: This is a prescription diuretic that reduces

abdominal bloating. The usual dose is 100 mg daily, take it forthe 14 days before your period.

Sarafem: (Prozac for PMS) or Zoloft are serotonin -regulatingantidepressants. Antidepressants for PMS may be taken duringthe 10 to 14 days prior to a period. The safety of long-termintermittent serotonin-regulating antidepressants are unknown.

Finding the PMS treatment that works for you may involve trialand error. PMS solutions are arriving almost monthly.Virtually every woman has options that can vastly improve thequality of her life.

Cut the Caffeine: Even one cup of coffee or cola a day mayexasperate PMS symptoms like irritability, insomnia, andfeelings of being on edge.

Stock up on Sleep: When youre feeling exhausted, PMSsymptoms seem to be even worse. Sticking to a regularsnooze schedule throughout the month and especially in thetwo weeks before your period can keep symptoms in check.Your goal: Six to eight hours of Shuteye every night!

De-Stress: High levels of stress can transform PMS fromannoying to intolerable. If possible, try to avoid over-scheduling yourself the week before you period. A recent

study by the University of Miami School of Medicine foundthat PMS sufferers who received regular massages had lessanxiety, depressed mood, water retention and pain.

Become a Nibbler: Small meals spread throughout the day, instead of three large ones, can head off intense cravingsand even raise your spirits. There is some evidence that car-bohydrates encourage a better synthesis of serotonin andtherefore helps elevate the mood.

Seek sunshine: A recent study found that 30 minutes ofbright light therapy two weeks prior to a womans periodsignificantly reduced PMS depression and tension.

LITTLE CHANGES CAN ZAP PMS

BRET TV UPDATE BY LISA HARMER

BRET TV'S HOMEWORK HOTLINE con-tinues to be a huge success. As the callsincrease in volume, they also continued toincrease in usefulness. Each week we hearfrom more and more young people whohave grown to rely on the weekly programon Thursday nights from 7-9 p.m. Theylook forward to having the needed help with

their math homework as well as hearing their names and thenames of many of their friends called out during question andanswer sessions.

The teachers themselves continue to amaze all of us who makeup this year's committee as well. Their intelligence is some-thing all of us are constantly impressed with and amazed by.Also, their willingness to gently work through solutions toproblems is always a reminder to me of why teachers are someaningful and influential in our society. As committee mem-bers we have truly enjoyed our time in between calls getting toknow the teachers and the many helpful tips they can give us on

raising our own children and how to direct them in positiveways of learning. (All of this comes free with our shifts onThursday nights. It seems anything we do in the Junior Leaguehas an added side benefit we never expect!)

On last thing to mention is how much we have enjoyed the addi-tion of our new members this year. They came to last month'scommittee meeting with bright eyes, big smiles and hands thatwere eager to do what was needed. How wonderful to see theirenthusiasm and excitement! As their resolve to fulfill their per-sonal commitments to the league were demonstrated, we werethankful for the encouragement to continue our own goals toserve our community. Again, a side benefit was getting to knowseveral warm and special women who we may never haveknown were it not for our common goals in the Junior League.

Lastly, BRET TV thrives this year with wonderful teachers, amazing students calling in and incredible committee membersboth old and new who have joined together on yet another suc-cessful Junior League project.
